Several ambulances were parked outside and medics were waiting at the door when we stepped out. Motty was already being seen to by one of the crews. I carried Sutton to another with an empty gurney while the medics started to check her over.
Motty slid off her gurney and took a step toward Sutton. Stopping when Sutton turned her head away. Motty shrank away, hanging her head as she returned to the care of the medics. I was confused and never would have expected to see that exchange. Surely Sutton just hadn’t seen Motty.
“Motty’s here,” I told her, brushing her hair back.
Sutton winced as the medic pulled the fabric of her shredded gown away from the gashes in her side. I took one of the wipes the other medic had and started to clean the blood from her face so they could have a clearer assessment. She still didn’t say anything about wanting to see Motty. Not even checking on her.
“Did you want to see Motty?” I asked.
“No,” she replied curtly.
I was taken aback by her coldness. She adored Motty. It was because of Motty that we had even made it here in time. After getting finding Luna Darcy we learned that Motty had to have been taken with Sutton. Once we had a general direction to search, I was able to mind link with her to find out where they were. When we arrived, Motty was outside, keeping Hannah from rushing back inside. It wasn’t hard to figure out that Sutton had told her to take her sister to safety. So I was confused about what was going on.
“Sutton…”
“I don’t want to talk about it tonight,” she stated. “I just want to go home.” She grabbed my hand and squeezed it. “Take me home, Lucas.”
“I must insist you stay.” My head snapped to Prince Raphe as he came to stand next to me. “You are in no fit state to travel, young lady. I can assure you we have the best available medical treatment in the country. You will be comfortable in our hospital. I’ve just finished arranging a private room for your recovery.”
Sutton looked at me worriedly, exhaustion and pain obvious in her expression.
“Thank you, Prince Raphe,” she told him cautiously. “But I would really rather go back to the Ironpaw pack lands.”
Prince Raphe gave her a gentle smile before glancing my way. The look told me staying wasn’t actually request which put me a little on edge. Although I couldn’t be too surprised by his insistence considering his newly discovered relation.
“I understand you have had a more than difficult day,” Prince Raphe continued. “That will undoubtedly have anyone craving the comforts of familiar territory. However, I could not in good conscience allow you to leave the city without being sure you are well and healthy. Take a few moments and speak with your mate. Hopefully he will be able to convince you that you will be perfectly comfortable here.”
With a bow of his head, he turned and walked away. With a sigh, I turned my attention back to Sutton. Her grip on my hand had tightened as the medics continued to dress her wounds.
“Some of these too deep to fully treat here,” one of the attendants stated. “We’ll need to transport her to the hospital.”
I nodded my agreement and we loaded into the back of the ambulance. They shut the doors behind us and we pulled out just a few moments later. I held Sutton’s hand, running my thumbs along her skin for reassurance.
“He knows,” I finally told her.
“What…?” Sutton choked.
“He knows who you are, baby,” I repeated gently. “Apparently, the familiarities were brought to his attention. That’s why he was at the ball tonight. It wasn’t hard for him to figure it out.”
“What’s going to happen? What does he want?” Sutton rushed.
“Information, I suppose,” I replied with a shrug. “Other than that, I have no idea. We haven’t had the opportunity to discuss anything further.”
“Information? That’s all?” Sutton questioned. “What did you tell him?”
“As little as possible,” I replied. “I confirmed the basics. I told him this wasn’t my story to tell.”
“So, we’re not going home…” Tears started to form in her eyes and squeezed my hand tighter.
“Shh, yes, princess,” I assured her. “We will be going home. As soon as you’re healed enough.” I sighed, brushing my knuckles along her jaw. “Don’t think about any of that right now. I just need you to get better.”
“Don’t I always?” she managed to tease.
I scoffed bitterly. “Far more often than you ever should,” I said. “While I’m here again without a scratch. Some mate I am.”
“You’re just tougher than me,” Sutton said. “Which is a good thing. Who would save me if you weren’t?”
“You’re tougher than I could ever be, princess,” I replied. “I’m so proud of you, baby.”
“I almost got myself killed,” she said. “I’m sorry, Lucas. I shouldn’t have taken that risk. I should have waited for you to come back”
“Darcy told me what happened,” I said. “You were protecting your sister. And you fought like hell. You fought harder than you ever should have had to. I could be angry but I’m not. At least not with you. This is part of who you are, princess. And I couldn’t love you more for it.”
