I went into surgery as soon as we got to the hospital. I woke up to the sun shining through the window and the weight of someone laying behind me. The scent told me it was Lucas and the steady rise and fall of his chest meant he was sleeping. I was reluctant to wake him but my side was incredibly itchy. It was a good sign that I was healing quickly, but that didn’t make it any more comfortable.
I managed to reach up and relieve some of the irritation but it wasn’t much and it wasn’t long. I needed to reposition. I leaned up slightly, getting a better look at Lucas. I didn’t know how he was even sleeping since he barely fit on the small hospital bed with. A grin tugged on my lips and I shook my head. I rubbed his arm to wake him. If I didn’t he would have likely fallen on the floor if I tried to get up.
“Lucas…” my voice sounded muffled and nasally thanks to the stint that had been placed to reset my broken nose. “Lucas, wake up.”
He inhaled sharply, lifting up to cover me in the bed.
“What is it? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” I told him. “You were going to fall out of the bed.”
Lucas grunted, burying his face in my hair and kissing my neck. Careful not to put pressure on my side, he scooted closer.
“How are you feeling?” he asked gently.
“Itchy,” I admitted. “These bandages are irritating. I think I’ve healed enough to remove them.”
“Hang on,” Lucas said, kissing my cheek before pushing off the bed.
He got up and went to the small en suite supply cabinet. After rummaging around for a minute, he came back with a white tub in his hand. Setting it down, he pulled my blankets aside and lifted the hospital gown that covered me. I hissed as he started to remove the sticky bandages. It didn’t hurt but it did make the itching worse.
“This does look good,” he confirmed. “I’ll call the doctor in to check it just in case but this should help with the itchiness.”
He applied the ointment from the tub gently. It was an immediate relief. Mixed with the tingling sensation of his touch, it was hard not to lean into the feeling. He was finishing up when there was a quiet knock on the door. Lucas quickly covered me before a woman popped her head in from behind the curtain that blocked the door.
“Ah, you’re awake,” she said softly. “You have a visitor. But let me check you over first. I’m Nurse Gwen.”
The nurse ran through her checklist and checked all my injuries. She seemed very happy with the progress I was making. She even removed the splint and bandages from my face. Not that it was that much of an improvement. My face was still horribly bruised and swollen, but at least my nose wouldn’t have permanent damage or disfigurement.
“Everything looks great,” Nurse Gwen stated as she marked my chart. “If you’re comfortable, I’ll send your guest right in.”
I gave her a stiff smile and a nod. She scurried out of the room as I repositioned on the bed so I could face whoever it was coming to see us. I had no idea who it was. I didn’t bother to ask the nurse. I figured it was Max checking in.
Oh, how wrong I was.
I pulled the blankets up a little further as Prince Raphe entered the room.
“Your Grace…” I said nervously. “I… I wasn’t expecting to see you today.”
“Prince Raphe,” Lucas greeted, draping an arm of my shoulders protectively.
The prince looked between us. His eyes narrowing curiously at Lucas.
“I would have thought Alpha Lucas would have spoken to you already, Luna Sutton,” he stated. “It would seem we both have some things to discuss.”
I looked up at Lucas then back the man who was apparently my uncle.
“For give me, Prince Raphe,” I said. “Lucas did tell me that you figured out who my mother was. Who I am.”
“Yet you’re surprised that I would come to see how you were fairing?” he commented, taking a seat near the end of the bed. “I’m not sure what you have been told about the Royals but I can assure you, family is important to us. This new revelation, while shocking and a complete surprise, is not something I could easily ignore.”
“I don’t want any trouble,” I rushed.
“Sutton, it’s okay,” Lucas tried to assure me, even though I could sense that he wasn’t exactly eager to have the prince here either.
“Neither do I, my dear girl,” Prince Raphe replied. “But I would like to know about my niece. Perhaps even find out what happened to my dear sister. Is that such a horrible request?”
I chewed my lip, almost feeling a little guilty about my distant treatment toward the man. Yet, I still wasn’t sure I was ready for this. I thought I would have more time to come to terms with the situation.
“I can’t tell you much of my mother,” I told him. “I never knew who she really was. All I can really say is that she died when I was eleven. But she had a happy life, as far as I knew, after she left the packs.”
He gave me a sympathetic and thankful look.
“But she never told you why she left? Why she faked her own death?”
I shook my head. “I didn’t even know she was a lycan until I met Lucas,” I told him. “And that’s only because he was able to tell that I was.”
The prince nodded but he still seemed confused, not that that was surprising. I was still baffled by all that we had found out.
“I haven’t told my father about this yet,” Prince Raphe stated, almost absently. “He was… very fond of Leanetta. I would argue that she was his favorite. To find out she had children… it would mean the world to him. However, it would also break his heart if he could not be a part of your life.” He met my gaze with a serious expression. “I will not force you to welcome us as your family, Sutton. But I also won’t tell him of your existence unless you are open to being a part of ours. I would ask that you seriously consider how you want to move forward.”
