Prince Raphe left us soon after he arrived. The doctor came in soon after to check me over and go over all of the procedures and treatments. He wanted to keep me for observation for a while longer but I would likely be released the next morning. That was a bit of a disappointment but I didn’t have the energy to argue. As the doctor was leaving, Max came in.
“Luna, it’s good to see you recovering,” he greeted with a genuine smile. “We were all pretty desperate to have you back safe and sound last night.”
“Thank you, Max,” I told him. “I’m glad to be here, too. How is everything back at the hotel?”
Max rubbed the back of his neck. “Chaotic,” he replied, taking a seat. “Some of the packs have left while others have hung back to find out what was going on. Soloman has been trying to field the nosiest inquirers. But I have a feeling he’d rather be here. He sends his best.”
“I’m guessing the Dawn Stalkers were the first to leave,” I stated.
Max’s expression became more serious. “As soon as they were allowed,” he replied.
“Why do you say it like that?” I pressed.
“I’m sorry, Luna,” he said with a sigh. “We left Hannah with the Council Guard. They didn’t realize she was being held for questioning. She left with the Dawn Stalkers.”
I suddenly felt really tired. Part of me was trying to be worried but for the most part, I was just numb. And not really surprised.
“Hannah made her choice,” I stated. “I can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. And I especially can’t help someone who hates me that much.”
“She only hated you because of him,” Lucas told me. “We’ll get her back and make it right.”
“No…” I let out a heavy sigh, shifting in the bed to relieve my discomfort. “I mean… don’t worry about it right now.”
“Sutton…”
“We finally have a respite from Anders and his schemes,” I protested. “We have the Royal Council on our side but if we start poking around in his business, that will change. It’s not a risk I want to take. Not even for my sister. Not when she is exactly where she wants to be. The fact that where she wants to be is a horrible place is irrelevant at this point.”
Lucas laced his fingers with mine. I could feel him holding back his objections. But my mind was made up. She’d be safe for now. Especially now that Prince Raphe knew who we were. Hurting her would be too much of a risk for him.
“If I can be blunt, Luna, I don’t see anything wrong with that decision,” Max told me. “I don’t particularly like that Hannah could be used against us again, but with the mental state she’s in right now, dealing with her will be nothing but trouble. Best to leave it until the right opportunity presents itself.”
“Thanks, Max,” I said with a sad smile.
“Is there anything else we should be updated on?” Lucas asked him.
“Nothing pressing,” he replied. “But we do need to know the game plan. We’re getting everything packed up and ready to go whenever you guys are ready. I asked Motty if she wanted to come with me today but she insisted on having everything ready…”
“What?” I blurted out, sitting up straighter. “She’s doing what? Is she in our room? Is she packing our stuff?”
I started to get up but Lucas stopped me.
“Sutton, what are you doing? Calm down,” he insisted. “What is going on?”
“I don’t want her touching my things,” I yelled. “I have to get my letter.”
“Sutton, the letter is safe. No ones going to touch it. Now, what’s going on? Did something happen with Motty?”
I clenched my jaw, fighting back the new surge of pain and anger of her betrayal. Yet, I wasn’t sure I wanted to tell Lucas. He would be furious. I wasn’t entirely sure how he would react. Which I didn’t know how to deal with because I didn’t know how I was reacting to the situation.
“Sutton…” Lucas pushed.
I couldn’t keep it from him.
“Motty was the spy,” I said softly. “She’s been feeding information to Mason.”
“What?” Max said coldly.
Lucas didn’t say anything. He just stiffened. His expression going blank. Our connection blocked.
“What else did she have a hand in?” Max asked.
“She… she’s the one who attacked Darcy,” I explained. “Knocked her out so Hannah could drug me and take me to Mason.”
Lucas suddenly stood up and went to leave but I grabbed his arm.
“Lucas, don’t…”
“Don’t what, Sutton?” he barked. “She’s a traitor. She set you up to be murdered.”
“No…” I stopped myself, not sure if that is what she had done or not. With a grunt, I fell back against the pillows. “She did it for her mother. Apparently, she’s still alive and locked away in some horrible asylum back in the Hallowed Moon Pack. Mason promised her Anders would get her out.”
“You think that excuses her actions?” Lucas hissed.
“No,” I rushed. “Maybe. I don’t know, Lucas. Look, I don’t trust her. I don’t want her around but…”
“But what? You think we should just let her go?” Lucas snapped. “That’s not going to happen, Sutton.”
“I don’t want her dead,” I snapped back.
The muscles in Lucas’ jaw worked. His fists clenched.
“Lucas… she was desperate,” I said. “I’m not excusing what she did, I just… I don’t know what I want to do about it yet. And despite what she did to get me there, she did save my life in that wearhouse. Or at the very least, she really tried to. Please, can we just deal with this when we get back home? When I’ve had some time to think about things?”
Lucas huffed unhappily.
“Fine,” he agreed. “But she gets sent back to Ironpaw territory and locked up today.”
