: Sutton
Max left to go take care of the arrangements for Motty. It was a relief to not have to think about that for another day or two. Especially since the next decision we agreed on was that I would read the letter as soon as we got back to the hotel. I couldn’t put it off any longer. We couldn’t leave without giving Prince Raphe an answer and I couldn’t give him an answer until I read the letter.
So, that’s why I now sat in the hotel room staring at the envelope with my name on it.
I’d been discharged late in the afternoon. Soloman met us at the hospital to drive us back. It had been a quiet drive back. I didn’t really have much to say. Lucas didn’t either, it seemed. He did ask me if I wanted him to stay while I read the letter. I decided to do it on my own.
Although, I was still going back and forth on that decision.
I let out a loud huff. “Come on, Sutton. You’re way overthinking this.”
‘I wouldn’t go that far,’ Nova argued in my head. ‘But you are acting like this is a possible death sentence or something.’
‘Are you saying I’m being dramatic?’ I replied with a raised eyebrow.
‘Maybe a little.’
Mumbling under my breath I grabbed the letter off the table. My hands started to shake as I pulled at the seal of the envelope. With a deep breath, I pulled the letter from the envelope. Unfolding the paper, I was thrown into a feeling of nostalgia at the sight of my mother’s handwriting.
My dearest Sutton,
I want to start by saying that you and your sisters have been the light of my life. I love you all with all my heart and I could not have asked for a greater blessing. I know when you’re reading this, that I’ve been gone for some time. I am so sorry that I didn’t get to see you all grow up into the beautiful women I know you will become.
I wish I could say that is was my greatest regret, however, I cannot.
You see, my beautiful Sutton, Wesley is not your real father. Even though he loves you as such. I hope you can forgive me for this deception, my love, for it is something that has never sat right with me. But it was entirely necessary for your safety and happiness. So, I beg you to let me explain.
I am not who you think I am. I was born a lycan. More than that, I was born into the lycan royal family. My real name is Leanetta Thoengarde, Princess of Lycuria.
I know this sounds hard to believe. I am sure you’re wondering how a lycan princess ended up living a simple life among humans. That, my dear child, is a long story. One I wish I could tell you myself but alas, you are too young for such concerns. So, I will endeavor to tell you what my heart can handle here.
First, I want to say that I loved my family and I loved my people. But there was a time in my life when I was more free spirited then a princess should be. However, I will not apologize for that, because that is how I met my fated mate. Your beautiful father.
Here is when it becomes harder to tell you everything because this is when my life completely changed.
Do you remember how I loved to sing? I told you once that I used to sing in front of hundreds of people. That was my free-spirited rebellion. I built a secret persona that allowed me to that passion. Not only was this how I met my Ashad, but a very dear friend, Alana.
Alana was a kind and generous and filled with grace. And, as it turned out, she was my brother’s fated mate. I was so happy when they found each other. Raphe with Alana and me with my Ashad, I believed the royal family was looking at a bright future together.
I was wrong.
Raphe and Alana would not make it to their mating ceremony before tragedy struck. Alana was struck by a mysterious illness. It consumed her quickly and she soon succumbed to the disease. Her death was a painful tragedy. But it was made even more horrific when my brother announced that his chosen mate only a month after her death.
I was devastated… and suspicious. There were so many things that did not add up. After some digging, I started to believe that my own brother was behind the death of his own mate. While I couldn’t find proof, I did learn some things about Raphe and his new mate, Nomi, that I found very concerning. Political alignments that went challenged our traditions. Policies that changed our core ideals. Plans to rule our people in a way that would send us back to darker times.
I questioned so much of what I knew about my brother. My mistake was making these protests known. I was not quiet about my objections or my suspicions. It caused a great rift within my family and my people. With civil war on the horizon, our father was forced to take action. To save our most sacred and valued beliefs, my father chose to break from tradition and name me as his successor.
While this seemed to calm some of the unrest within the nation, it only created a deeper split between me and my brother. Particularly, due to his mate. It was clear that Nomi was the greatest influence over the changes to my brother. Once I was named as successor, I challenged her authority and stripped her of the power that came with her position. Within a few months, the assassination attempts started.
Again, I had no proof that Raphe or Nomi were behind the plots against me. My father could not bring himself to believe his son was capable of such treachery nor would he turn Nomi out for fear of losing his son along with her. He was in an untenable situation.
Something more had to be done.
The choice was made when I found out I pregnant with you. I could no longer take the same risks with my life at the cost of yours. Ashad and I decided to go into hiding, at least until you were born and we could ensure your safety.
However, something went wrong with the plan. We were attacked on the way to our safe house. Your father, your beautiful, wonderful father, died saving us. Thanks to him and his sacrifice, I was able to get to safety but I was wounded. Using that to my advantage, I had plastic surgery to change my appearance. Obtaining an eye transplant to remove my most recognizable feature. Then emerged myself into human life.
Once you were born and I met Wesley, I made the impossible decision to kill my wolf. I could not risk drawing attention to you. After Ashad’s death, I could never return home to rule as my father wished. My life within the packs died with your father. But you, my wonderful girl, are destined to do what I could not. I could never rob you of your heritage or birthright.
You have a wolf, Sutton. As only a mother can, I can sense that she is strong and wise. Since I will not be here to help guide you through this change, I have chosen to suppress her until you are of age to claim your life among the packs. Now that you are eighteen, you need to rejoin your kind. The tea that we have shared contains the suppression agent. Stop drinking it and your wolf will appear.
Among the items of this box, I have left you clues to lead you to someone who will tell you everything I could not. Find her. She will guide you. When you have rejoined the packs, seek out Soloman Avenwood. He will be a strong ally.
Good luck, my love. I love you beyond words.
Love,
Your mother
