I spent the next few hours with my family. We talked through a lot of things. It was a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions all around. My dad took the news of Hannah’s actions pretty hard. It’s something I think I will struggle with for a while. But we cleared up a lot of miscommunications that had taken place over the years. Many of which were due to Mason’s interference. We still had some work to do to get back to how close we were before, but we were on the right track.
“Hey, if you guys are going to be staying here, why don’t I give you a tour around the packhouse?” I offered. “We can stop in the café and grab some dinner. And I’d love to show you the gardens. Actually, I’m excited to see them myself. Tanjie, my contractor, said they got a lot done while we were away.”
“That sounds like a great idea,” Helene said, getting to her feet.
“It’s a lot of walking, will you be okay?” I asked her cautiously.
“We can stop by our room and grab my cane just in case, but actually, I’ve felt better than ever lately,” she said. “I’ve been taking daily walks without any assistance for a while. Ever since I started on the new medication. Remind me to thank Alpha Lucas for setting that up.”
Lucas had left to attend to some pack business so we could have some time together. But he would meet us soon for dinner.
“Of course,” I told her. “I’d never let you go without.”
Helene looped her arm in mine as we left the apartment. “So, tell me about this garden we’re going to see.”
I gave them a tour of the packhouse, pointing out all the work Lucas had done on refurbishing the building. The conversation became lighter. It turned out that Helene was taking the new living situation rather well. She was already considering options for making the arrangement a long-term one. It was good to see her enjoying herself and the pack was giving her a warm welcome.
Lucas met us at the café and headed out to the garden with us. I was excited to see the progress they had made. Tanjie said they had been working practically around the clock since we left. It was only a few days but with how skilled the workers were, I could imagine they got a lot done.
“Luna Sutton, Alpha Lucas,” Tanjie greeted about halfway down the garden path. “I hope you don’t mind allowing me to escort you.”
“Of course, Tanjie,” Lucas said. “We’re looking to see your work.
“Tanjie, this is my sister, Helene, and my father, Wesley,” I introduced. “They’ll be staying with us for a while.”
“It’s lovely to meet you both,” Tanjie said kindly. “If you’ll follow me.”
We followed close behind Tanjie down the path. My brow furrowed as I saw boards and white curtains blocking my view of the area as we approached.
“What’s all this?” I asked.
“Partly for security, but mostly for privacy,” Tanjie said. “We’ve had a lot of nosy pack members hanging around and it almost caused an accident. It’s nice that they are so interested, many seem just as excited to see what this place will look like when it’s done. But I won’t satisfy everyone’s curiosity at the cost of safety.”
“Wise decision,” Lucas said. “I’ll put the word out that this is off limits for now.”
“Thank you, Alpha,” Tanjie said.
“But it’s okay for us to see it right now, right?” Hannah asked.
“Of course,” Tanjie said. “You have an escort. And you’re in luck. We have a surprise for our Luna and Alpha.”
“A surprise?” I replied as we came to an opening in the new barrier.
“You’ll see,” Tanjie said with a sly smile.
As we walked in, it was clear to see all the work they had put in. This half of the garden was almost perfect. The stone paths had been paved. The hedges had been planted. The flowerbeds had been installed. I even noticed that the old basin from the original fountain was used as a focal point, overflowing with gorgeous flowers in full bloom.
“It’s looking spectacular,” I told Tanjie. “Truly. I’m so happy with the progress you all have made.”
“Thank you, Luna, but you haven’t seen the best part yet.”
We continued toward the center of the garden. As we turned around a hedge wall, I caught sight of the only surprise she could be speaking of. I gasp with excitement and joy. A smile spreading ear to ear.
The fountain was complete. Fully restored to its original glory. The story of the pack founders etched prominently along the stone base.
“It’s magnificent,” Helene said next to me. “Honestly, Sutton. It’s gorgeous.”
“The only thing left to do is turn it on,” Tanjie said, moving toward a metal utility box hidden among the landscaping. “But I wanted to wait to give you the honor.”
“Me?” I replied.
“Of course,” she laughed, opening the panel on the box. “Who else?”
Lucas kissed my hair as he pressed the small of my back, ushering me towards Tanjie. I went over and knelt down, reaching my hand inside to find the knob. Turning it, I could hear the water start to flow through the pipes. I kept my eyes on the fountain as the first trickle appeared. Within a few moments, the water was flowing strongly. Suddenly, a steady spray sprung from the top basin.
“It’s working,” Helene said giddily.
I laughed happily, turning to Tanjie and pulling her into a hug.
“Thank you,” I told her. “It’s perfect.”
“You’ve done a great job, Tanjie,” Lucas told her proudly. “How soon do you think you can finish the rest?”
“It depends,” Tanjie said. “We’re still waiting on some things to come in but I’d feel confident saying three weeks.”
“Good,” Lucas replied. “Because we’re moving up Sutton’s Luna ceremony.”
