I was up early the next day, ready to get on the road as soon as Lucas was ready. I packed light, so had Lucas. We didn’t expect this to be a long trip. Just long enough to figure out where, what, or who this clue was leading us to. Hopefully, the drive would be the longest part.
I dropped my duffle bag next Lucas’ in the foyer and grabbed my phone to message Helene to see if she was almost ready. Just as the message sent, the elevator dinged. The doors opened to Helene with Lucas next to her holding her bag.
“Where’s Dad?” I asked, my brow furrowing.
“He said he couldn’t make it,” Helene said curiously. “He said he’s got some business to take care of. I know he’s still trying to wrap some things up back home.”
“Oh, okay,” I replied, a little disappointed. “Well, are you ready then? You have your medication?”
Helene lifted a small cooler. “Good to go.”
Lucas and I grabbed the rest of our bags and headed out. Helene and I were chatting as we made it to the carport. Helene suddenly fell quiet, her face turning red. She cleared her throat and lowered her head.
“Helene, are you okay?” I asked, worried she wasn’t feeling well.
“Fine,” she squeaked with a forced smile. “Just excited to see the territory.”
She rushed past me toward the truck. She was moving well enough, so I just brushed the incident off. But I’d still keep an eye on her just in case. Jaden had been waiting for us by the truck and was helping Lucas load everything, so I handed him my bag for him to throw in the back with the rest.
“Good morning, Jaden,” I greeted.
“Good morning, Luna,” he replied.
“You sure you want to ride along with us?” I asked. “It’s long drive.”
Jaden gave me a smile. “Call it nostalgia,” he replied. “It’ll be nice to see the lake again. A lot of good memories there.”
“That’s what Tarrah said. I think she’s jealous she’s not going,” I told him. “I told her she could come but she wanted to focus on moving in and her ceremony tasks.”
“That’s probably a good thing,” Jaden said with a smirk. “The last time I was stuck in a vehicle with my sister for that long, our mother threatened to turn the car around fifteen times.”
“Ha,” I laughed as I walked around the truck to get in. “I can picture that. You can take the front. I’ll ride in the back with Helene.”
He gave me a smile and I could have sworn a look of relief flashed across his face as he walked past me. I shook off the momentary confusion and jumped into the back seat. Lucas pulled out of the spot and we were on our way.
I had organized most of what was in the box into a folder and brought it with me. The keepsakes with the only exception. Those I left behind. But if we ended up needing them, Tarrah would know where to find them in our apartment. For now, there was plenty for me to go through.
Reading the letters between my parents had been my main focus. I had really started to get interested in them the more I got through. It was like I was getting to know them. I was surprised at how much the letters sounded like my mother. I know that sounds strange since the woman who wrote these was my mother. But it was hard to reconcile them with the woman I knew. At least at first. But that wasn’t the case anymore.
I was also starting to feel like her mate meant something to me. Again, strange, considering he was my biological father. Still I wasn’t sure I could ever think of him as a father. But that didn’t mean I couldn’t feel something for him. That I couldn’t get know who he was to my mother. That I couldn’t understand why she loved him. The more I read, those things became more and more obvious.
I’d fallen asleep reading by the time we made our first pitstop for something to eat in the early afternoon. We’d avoided making too many stops the first stretch of the drive, so it was definitely time for me to stretch my legs.
I got out of the backseat and let out a groan as I stretched out my stiff muscles. Lucas grabbed my waist and pulled me in for a kiss. As if we hadn’t just spent six hours in a car together.
“You’re riding up front with me the rest of the way,” he ordered.
I rolled my eyes. “Fine. But only if you feed me first.”
“Done.”
Lucas took my hand and started to lead me toward the restaurant. I noticed Helene and Jaden had already gone ahead. I could tell from here that my sister was playing with her hands and I couldn’t help but notice how close she kept drifting toward Jaden. Suddenly, things started to make sense. I let out a chuckle and shook my head.
“What?” Lucas asked.
“Nothing,” I said. “But I think Helene may have a little crush on your Beta.”
Lucas paused for a moment, looking down at me with a curious expression.
“Really?”
“I’m just speculating,” I said with a laugh. “But I’ve only ever seen her get all nervous and blush like that around one other person.”
“A boy?”
“Yes, a boy,” I said. “So, yeah, I’m pretty sure she’s enjoying his company. Is that bad? Does it bother you.”
A broad grin spread across Lucas’ face and he pulled me closer against him.
“Not at all.”
