We pulled up to the lake in the early rays of twilight, allowing me a spectacular view of the gorgeous landscape. The further we drove, the more I could understand how this could be such a special place for my parents. It was incredibly serene just viewing it through the truck window.
Lucas followed the voice on the GPS to the cabin we had rented for the night. He pulled up to a log cabin sitting at the top of an incline leading right down the water’s edge. We were situated at the curve of an inlet of water, giving us some privacy among the trees from any other lake goers.
Not that I felt like we needed it. I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the people who frequented this summer getaway. I could imagine all the families who brought their kids as the weather got hot. Teaching them to swim in the cool waters. Boating or kayaking up and down the lake.
I slid out of the truck and walked across the gravel to look out over the water.
“We should come back here,” I told Lucas as he came up beside me. “I get why Mom would see this place as a retreat.”
“We can come whenever you want, princess,” he replied, kissing my hair.
Nova was bouncing on her feet in my head, itching to be let loose in this lush woodland. Tarrah and Jaden said wolves were welcome in the area. So, I couldn’t see why she wouldn’t get the opportunity to explore.
Taking my hand, Lucas led me toward the deck leading up to the front door. There was a high-tech-looking keypad on the lock that Lucas entered the code for. It clicked open and we were free to enter.
It was a quaint interior. The furnishings were older but well taken care of. There was a loft over the kitchen with the main bedroom. A small living room with a couch and an armchair. A hallway led to the one bathroom we would be sharing and a second room with a set of twin bunk beds.
I had no complaints about our accommodations, however, I could tell right away it wasn’t where we needed to be. It didn’t match the photo Mom had left. But that wasn’t shocking. I didn’t expect to get that lucky. We would just have to do some digging.
“How many other cabins are there in the area?” I asked as I hauled my duffle bag up the stairs to the loft.
“Ten, I believe,” Lucas said. “There’s a welcome center back down the road we came in on. We can start there first thing in the morning.”
“Sounds like a plan to me,” I replied, dropping my stuff on the bed.
I took the moment to look around the room. My initial reaction to being here was setting in and my mind was shifting back to our goal. I know I hadn’t seen a lot of the place, but I still had a hard time believing we would be able to find what we were looking for.
“Everything okay?” Lucas asked.
“Yeah,” I said with a soft smile. “Just wondering if we’ll actually manage to find something or if this will end up being a wasted trip.”
“All we can do is try,” he replied encouragingly. “The best place to start would be the office. With luck, they’ll have records that can tell us which cabin your mom stayed in when she was here. And Jaden says he shouldn’t have any trouble getting the rock formation in that photo with Korinna. That could point us in the right direction, too. So, we have our next steps, which means we are far from a dead end.”
“I know, I know,” I said with a chuckle. “I guess it’s just having to wait until morning now that we’re here.”
“Well, I can’t control what time the main office closes, baby,” Lucas replied with a grin. “In the meantime, you could use this time to relax for once. It may be the last time you get the chance for a few weeks.”
“I will,” I replied. “But… before that… would you be interested in going for a run? Nova is dying to get out and explore.”
Lucas grinned as he reached out and tugged me toward him. His lips landed on mine and his hand went to the nape of my neck.
“Rhonen and I would love to join you for a run,” Lucas replied.
Helene’s voice drifted up to the loft from below. Followed by Jaden’s. It sounded like they were arguing. I frowned and pulled away from Lucas, heading back downstairs.
“…stop being ridiculous,” Helene said as she was trying to tug a bag from Jaden’s hands. “I am capable of judging where I will be comfortable or not.”
“I didn’t say that you weren’t,” Jaden hissed in frustration. “I’m only…”
“It sure sounded like you were,” Helene interrupted.
“Whoa, whoa, what’s going on?” I asked, breaking up the squabble.
“I was just trying to help Helene get her stuff into the bedroom,” Jaden explained. “I offered to take the couch so she could have her privacy.”
“And I said that was dumb because he would never fit his big sasquatch body on that thing,” Helene argued. “I will be perfectly comfortable sleeping out here.”
“Yeah, right out in the open where anyone can walk in on you,” Jaden retorted.
“Like there’s enough space here to avoid that anyway.”
“Enough,” Lucas shouted. Without another word, he went over to the couch and pulled off the cushions. “The couch pulls out into a bed. Jaden will fit just fine out here. Helene, take the bedroom.”
Helene narrowed her eyes at Lucas. She did not like losing an argument. That’s probably why it rarely happened. Still, she knew when she’d been beaten. She yanked her bag from Jaden’s hands, giving a half-grimace, half-smile at the smug look on his face.
I just shook my head and tried not to laugh.
