Sutton was already at the top of the stairs when I slammed the cabin door behind me. I took them two at a time to catch up to her. She started to grab clothes and shove them back in her suitcase.
“We’re not done with this discussion, Sutton,” I growled. “You’re not going to accuse me of something like that and just walk away. I’ve never done anything but prove to you that I don’t care whether someone is human or lycan.”
“Oh, whatever, that doesn’t mean it didn’t cross your mind the moment you saw an opportunity to screw him over,” Sutton yelled back. “You’ve hated my father from the start. You can’t accept that he was deceived, too. You refuse to believe that he didn’t know what was happening with Mason. So you’re punishing him.”
I advanced on her, pushing her bags away. “You’re right. I didn’t trust him,” I barked. “I still don’t. Not completely. When it comes to you, I probably never will. Because he may care about you, but the fact is — he has two other daughters, Sutton. I can’t ignore the possibility of him choosing them over his stepdaughter.”
“That wouldn’t even be a question if you just left him out of all this in the first place,” Sutton snapped.
“He was already a part of this,” I bellowed. “Like it or not, there were too many ways this situation would come back on Wesley, whether I involved him or not. Asking him to fix his mistakes is far from too much to ask.”
“But you didn’t ask me,” Sutton growled. “You made these decisions without asking me. YOU decided that I couldn’t handle it. That I shouldn’t be a part of it.”
“I was trying…”
“… to protect me. Yeah, I get it,” she interrupted, pushing past me to grab more of her stuff. “Just shows what you think of me when the moment things start getting bad, you start keeping secrets.”
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” I rumbled, ripping the clothes from her hands.
“You don’t think I can handle it,” she retorted. “You think I’m weak.”
My hand shot to the nape of her neck as a roar grew in my chest. Even Rhonen was snarling at the accusation. I forced her to look at me. To meet my eyes when she insulted me.
“You know exactly how I feel about you, Sutton. Believing you’re weak has never crossed my mind.”
My mouth slammed into hers, cutting off her response. The intensity of our emotions overwhelming both of us. I couldn’t help but face them in the most natural and effective way. I fisted her hair. My lips moving down her jaw, then her neck. My teeth pressed down on her mark, making her gasp.
“This tells you everything I think about you,” I spoke in a low rumble. I grabbed her wrist, pressing her hand to my hardened length beneath my jeans. “This tells you everything I feel about you.”
Sutton didn’t need any further instruction. Her hands immediately worked at the button and zipper. The second she freed me, I spun her around, forcefully bending her over banister of the loft. I pulled her bottoms off roughly, growling as she was so exquisitely exposed to me. I moved behind her, her scent telling me she was completely ready.
I slammed into her. Grunting as she cried out. Her arousal soaking me. One hand still fisting her hair, the other gathering her shirt to hold her in place as I leaned over her.
“This is not weakness, Sutton,” I said gruffly in her ear. I lifted her slightly by her hair before thrusting hard again. “I could never have a weak mate.”
She moaned, rotating her hips for more. I swallowed, fighting the urge to let loose just yet.
“That’s it, baby,” I rasped, straightening back up. “This is power. The power you have over me, princess.”
She continued to grind against me until I grabbed her hips. She whimpered in protest. Her need growing as strongly as mine. Another rough thrust, followed by another until I was pounding into her. My hand moved to her throat as she pushed against the banister for leverage. I was completely lost in her.
“Yes…” she cried, her walls tightening around my cock as she came close to orgasm.
I didn’t relent. Gripping her hard as I felt my own release closing in. I pushed harder as she squeezed around me. I felt the base of my length start to swell. A roar bellowed from my chest as Sutton screamed. My knot locked inside her as I exploded, grabbing Sutton into my arms as she convulsed.
I stumbled backward, falling onto the bed. Still locked together, I tucked Sutton in close to me as we caught our breath. Our bond was wide open again. Sutton’s anger had subsided for the most part. As had mine. Still, mixed in with the contentment and satisfaction, there was a hint of guilt between both of us.
“I’m sorry I didn’t include you,” I told her. “I should have discussed my decisions with you first. I disrespected you and that wasn’t okay. No matter how good my intentions were.”
Sutton sighed, pressing closer into my chest.
“What I said… you were right to be angry,” she confessed. “It was disrespectful, too.”
“But do you believe it?” I pressed.
“No,” she responded quickly. “No, I don’t believe it. It’s… it’s just been in my head lately, I guess. You know… how bad things used to be between each of our kind. Now, there could be some threat of that happening again…”
“I won’t let that happen,” I told her. “I swear. I will stop whatever Anders is planning.”
Sutton laced her fingers in mine. I prayed that I hadn’t just made a promise I couldn’t keep. But I knew I would fight till my last breath trying to keep it.
