Sutton’s lips found mine, immediately deepening the kiss as her tongue reached for me. My fingers buried in her hair. My other hand cupped her ass, pulling her impossibly close. It still didn’t feel close enough. Sutton seemed to agree, as she tugged at my suit jacket. I pulled it off while she made quick work of the buttons on my shirt. Within seconds, we were skin-to-skin. Half our clothes lost on the floor.
I flipped her onto her back with a growl. Moving along her jaw and down to her neck. She moaned beneath me, making my hard cock twitch with anticipation as her scent overwhelmed me.
“I need to lock the elevator,” I rumbled, tired of the endless interruptions.
Her fingers slipped into my hair. “I already did.”
Another growl reverberated in my chest. I tore the rest of her clothes off, my mouth and hands exploring every inch. My fingers found the apex of her thighs. Her groan intensified as my tongue swirled around her nipple. Pushing inside her, my movements were fervent. Driven by her moans and cries, I quickly brought her to the brink, drinking in the feel and sound of her orgasm as she came apart.
My mouth took hers again, needing the taste of my mate. She wrapped her legs around me, grinding her hips against my stiff length still confined behind my slacks.
“I want more, Lucas,” Sutton urged. “I need more.”
I was more than eager to give her everything she wanted. I lifted her off the couch and headed for our bedroom. I didn’t want anything confining my movements. Not with everything I planned to do to her.
She wasn’t the only one who wanted more.
Halfway down the hall, my phone rang in my pocket. It was easy to ignore. I kicked the bedroom door closed behind me. My phone started to ring again. Again, I ignored it, laying Sutton down on the bed. Her hands roamed over my shoulders, down my chest. I kept our lips locked together, keeping her focused on me. Dipping between us, her fingers undid my belt, followed by my slacks.
Then she hesitated. I felt it in her whole body. It was brief, but it was enough. I noticed her hands begin to shake and I pulled away. Just as my phone rang again.
Sutton pushed herself up, turning her face away.
“You should probably answer that,” she said.
“Sutton…”
“It must be important,” she interjected, pulling a blanket over herself.
I don’t know what had gotten to her, but it wasn’t the call. I pulled my phone out of my pocket as I took a step back, giving her some space.
It was Soloman.
“What?” I snapped as I answered.
“We need to talk,” he replied. “Are you alone?”
“Hold on.”
Turning back to Sutton, I kissed the top of her head. I wanted her to know that whatever just happened, we were okay. But she was right, judging by Soloman’s tone, I needed to take this. I left our bedroom and headed toward my office… and a stiff drink.
“What do you want, Soloman?” I asked, returning to the call as I poured a whiskey.
“We need to meet,” he said.
“What have you found out?” I demanded.
“Nothing definitive, but enough to be concerned. We need to meet,” he reiterated.
I exhaled sharply. “Where are you?”
“Still in Dranfort but arranging a neutral location as we speak,” he replied. “This can’t be in Ironpaw territory.”
“I can’t leave Sutton right now,” I insisted. “She wants to make the announcement.”
There was a brief silence. “When?”
“After the full moon. I need to be here.”
Another silence. “She’s ready to shift?” Soloman said, some emotion I couldn’t pinpoint in his voice.
“She and her wolf think so,” I told him.
“Okay, then we have two days,” he said. “You’ll need to leave first thing in the morning.”
“Soloman…”
“I’ll send you the address soon,” he said. “Come alone.”
Soloman hung up before I could argue. I restrained from throwing the phone across the room in frustration. I contemplated sending him an unpleasant message telling him I wasn’t going anywhere, but I didn’t think I could get out of this. If he was telling me to leave Sutton, it was important. So, I sent Jaden a text instead, letting him know he would be in charge for a day or two until I got back, then headed back to my mate.
Sutton had put on a nightshirt and was back on the bed. Sitting with her knees tucked up to her chest and her arms around her legs. I sat down next to her.
“Is everything okay?” she asked, trying to hide the worry in her voice. “I’m sorry things keep getting in the way.”
“Don’t apologize for something that’s not your fault,” I told her. “Ever. We’ll have our time together, baby… when the time is right. But that will have to wait. I have to go away for a couple of days.”
Her head shot up to me. Fear and hurt flashed through her eyes. “Oh… I… I wanted…”
“I will be back by the full moon, Sutton,” I promised. “I wouldn’t miss your first shift for anything.”
“When are you leaving?”
“In the morning,” I told her, brushing a hair behind her ear.
She nodded, chewing her lip. She didn’t want to talk about what happened earlier. She was trying to make it seem like nothing had bothered her — like nothing had stopped her. I wouldn’t push the subject either. It was always hard on her to bring those things up and I just wanted to enjoy my time with her tonight. We’d figure things out.
“I don’t plan on letting my impending departure ruin our evening,” I began, pulling her closer. “So, why don’t we order some dinner — and dessert — and curl up and watch a movie? Spend the rest of the night just the two of us?”
The smile returned, lighting up her beautiful face as I watched relief wash through her.
She nodded eagerly. “I’d really like that.”
