We were having a good time. I really felt like I was getting to know the girls a lot better. It could have been the alcohol going to my head, but I didn’t feel so awkward anymore now that I didn’t have to worry about saying something I shouldn’t. And I was much better prepared to move past anything I didn’t want to talk about. There were a lot of smiles and a lot of laughs together.
It felt nice. Really nice. Like I actually had friends.
After about an hour, Motty announced she had to leave.
“My aunt wants me back home,” she said. “But thank you for letting me come. I had a good time.”
“We were glad to have you, Miss Motty,” Tarrah said.
“Come on. I’ll walk you out,” I said.
I took her to the door and said goodbye. Giving her a hug and thanking her again for my beautiful gift. I smiled as I watched her make her way down the hall. Stepping into the apartment, my phone pinged in my pocket. I pulled it out and smiled. Lucas was on his way back. I was sending a response when I heard someone call out down the hall.
“Martha,” a voice sounded angrily.
I stepped back out into the hall to see Motty disappear around a corner. I heard the voice continue but I couldn’t make out what was being said. Either way, I started down the hall to make sure Motty was okay. As I got closer, I heard a familiar voice scolding the young girl.
“…been told not to bother the ranking members. You’ve been reminded of your place enough times to know better.”
“But, Elise, I…”
“I don’t want to hear it, Martha,” Elise interrupted. “You know the rules. I’m afraid I’m going to have to…”
“Is there something wrong here?” I interjected, coming up beside Motty.
Elise’s eyes widened. “Luna Sutton, my apologies, I didn’t know you were out here.”
“I would think not,” I replied sternly. “But I am and I’m concerned about the conversation I just heard.”
“I’m so sorry, Luna,” Elise went on. “Martha knows she’s not supposed to be bothering you or the Alpha. I was just…”
I raised a hand, silencing her. “Motty was invited to a celebration this evening. She was there on my request.”
Elise’s mouth fell open and then shut then she began to stutter. “Oh… well… I… Well, I simply don’t feel that is appropriate for someone of her station. It is our policy that the staff aren’t to fraternize with the ranking members.”
“Is it?” I asked, knowing it wasn’t something Lucas actually approved of. Suddenly, I got an idea. “And you oversee everyone who works within the packhouse? In any capacity?”
“Well, no ma’am,” she replied. “I only oversee the in-house support — janitorial, administrative…”
“So you have no say in the expectations of personal staff, correct?”
“No, ma’am,” Elise replied.
“Then I don’t see why you would be worrying yourself with what Motty is doing,” I said. “As I have just hired her to be my personal assistant.”
I thought Elise would choke. “I had no ide…”
“No, you wouldn’t, seeing as you wouldn’t let her get a word in edgewise,” I pointed out. “I’m sure she was in the process of informing you. But now that you are aware, you can assuage your concerns about the company she keeps.”
“Yes, Luna,” Elise replied. “Of course.”
“You may go now, Elise.”
We all jumped and turned to see Lucas leaning against the corner of the wall.
“Yes, Alpha,” Elise stated before leaving.
“Luna, you didn’t have to do that,” Motty blurted out the moment Elise was gone from earshot. “I mean, there’s no way you actually want me to be your assistant.”
“Why not?” I asked. “You’ll be out of school in a few weeks. It’ll take me that long to figure out even a little of what I’m doing. We can sort things out in the evenings until then. So, what do you say?”
Motty’s face lit up with a huge smile. “I would love to,” she said, throwing her arms around my neck.
“Good,” I laughed. “Now you get back to your aunt. Tell her the good news. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Yes, of course,” she said happily. “Good night, Luna. Good night, Alpha.”
I smiled as she rushed off. An arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me in. Lucas kissed my temple.
“An assistant, huh?”
“I should have talked to you about it,” I said. “It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I just didn’t like how Elise was treating her.”
“You don’t have to ask permission, baby,” he replied. “I think it’s a good idea. And I’ll talk to Elise. Remind her that she doesn’t have to be so rigid. Tomorrow.” He turned me around. His mouth slamming into mine. “You know you’re amazing, right?”
I chuckled. “I keep telling you otherwise,” I replied. “But it’s nice someone is biased.”
“It’s time to go home.”
“We should tell the others,” I told him. “They’ll wonder where…”
“They will know exactly where we went,” Lucas growled, tugging me closer. “And be wise enough to leave us alone.”
He tucked my hair behind my ear as he looked down at me. His eyes were dark. There was something distant about him. He seemed… stressed.
“Is everything okay?” I asked. “Did your meeting not go well?”
His grip on my waist tightened. The muscle in his jaw twitched.
“It went as expected,” he said. “Everything will be fine.”
“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked. “I know I don’t know much about pack business, but hearing about it could help me learn.”
“Another time,” he said, his expression shifting to hide his anxiety. “Right now, all I want to do is get you home so we can have a celebration of our own.”
