I stood awkwardly at the kitchen counter as Jack fiddled with his soda can across from me. I’d tried asking him a few questions but he wasn’t talking. At least, he wasn’t talking to me. I could guess why. There was no telling what his mother had told him about me but I doubted any of it was good.
“I’m sure Lucas will be excited to see you,” I said in another attempt at small talk.
Nothing. He didn’t even look up. I chewed my lip, suppressing a sigh as I tried not to think of the many possible reasons why he was here. Finally, the elevator dinged and Lucas stepped out a second later. He gave me an apologetic look as he joined us in the kitchen.
“Hey, bud,” he greeted Jack, ruffling his hair before pulling him into a side hug. “I’m glad to see you. I’ve got some news for you but do you mind if I borrow Aunt Sutton for a minute before I tell you just yet?”
Jack shrugged. “Sure,” he finally spoke.
Lucas looked at me again and tipped his head to join him. I rounded the corner and he took my hand, leading me back to our bedroom. Once we were inside and the door was closed behind us, his hand went to the nape of my neck as he pulled me in for a kiss. I could feel some of the tension leave his body, but not enough. I had a feeling he was preparing both of us for a difficult conversation.
“You have to go?” I questioned when he pulled away. “Is it your aunt and uncle? Did something happen at the farm?”
His brow furrowed. “What? No, why would…” he stopped, knowing I was reaching for some reasonable explanation for what was going on. He sighed, kissing my forehead. “I’m not going anywhere, princess. But after this conversation, you may want me to.”
He was teasing, but I sensed he half believed that. He moved to sit on the edge of the bed and pulled me to stand between his legs. He brushed a strand of hair over my shoulder.
“Okay, Lucas, just say it,” I rushed. “The suspense is killing me.”
“Jack will be staying here for the summer,” he stated.
“Oh…” I was not expecting that. I took a small step back. “Um… do you mean here as in the city or here as in here… in our home?”
“In the city, in the packhouse, and yes, I would prefer here in our apartment,” he replied. “But if you’re not comfortable with that, I can find something else.”
“Just Jack or…”
“Yes,” Lucas interjected quickly. “Just Jack. I sent Daisy home.”
“Why was she here, Lucas?” I pressed. “What did she want?”
He shook his head. “It doesn’t matter what she wanted. She was just trying to cause trouble. But that’s why I want Jack to stay with us. She’s not stable right now. If I’m honest, this is the worst I’ve ever seen her.”
“Do you think she’s dangerous?” I asked with concern. “Would she hurt someone?”
“I’ll have Dr. Callahan and my family keep an eye on her,” he insisted. “I trust them to know if they need to intervene. So, I don’t want you to worry about Daisy. I want to know that you are okay with Jack being here.”
My brow furrowed and I crossed my arms over my chest. “He hates me, Lucas,” I said. “I won’t say two words to me. I can handle him staying here but I don’t know if he’ll be comfortable with it.”
“I doubt he hates you, baby,” Lucas said. “But I see how that would be a concern. I’ll talk to him and see how he feels about everything. And if he wants to stay, he’ll be my responsibility. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.”
“No, that’s fine,” I assured him. “I don’t mind helping keep an eye on him. You know, once I wrap my head around this whole situation. And as much as he’ll let me, of course. I just… well… I don’t want him to feel like we’re forcing me on him.”
“We’ll handle that obstacle if we come to it, babe,” he stated.
I nodded, chewing my lip again as I decided whether to ask what I really wanted to ask or not.
“Princess, the suspense is killing me,” he teased. “You can say or ask whatever you want.”
I scoffed, shaking my head with a grin. “She tried to get you to reject me again, didn’t she?”
“She did,” he stated calmly. He reached out and pulled me in again with a wry grin. “Is that jealousy I sense from my little wolf?”
“Ha,” I blurted out as Nova rolled her eyes in my head. “Not at all.” I slid my hands over his shoulders, wrapping my arms around his neck. “Possessiveness — most likely. Jealously implies she could have you. You’re all mine.”
Rhonen flashed in his eyes just before his mouth was on mine. He pressed my body against his hungrily. His tongue eagerly seeking mine. I knew exactly where this would lead if I didn’t pull myself back to my senses. I pushed him away quickly.
“We’ve still got a kid sitting at our kitchen counter,” I breathed. “I think that’s a more pressing situation, wouldn’t you agree?”
Lucas chuckled. “I’m not sure Rhonen would agree with that statement, but I suppose you’re right. Let’s go get him settled in.” He stood up and we headed for the door, but before he turned the knob, he to my face in his hand. “Thank you… for understanding.”
“He’s important to you, Lucas,” I replied. “I love you. That makes him important to me.”
