I called Aunt Lara first thing the next morning. She was surprised to know that Daisy and Jack had come to the city at all but she happily agreed to come and spend a few weeks getting Jack situated. The only concern was when she could make it out. She would need to work things out with Uncle Rodney and even then, it may be a week before she could manage it. We hung up with the promise of her getting back to me by the evening.
It was the first days of the summer break, so Jack was still asleep. According to Aunt Lara, he likely wouldn’t emerge from his room until noon. That would give me time to get through a short workday. Jaden and Max have already offered to help keep him occupied if need be. There were also a few summer programs I would get him enrolled in.
I was sending an email to a friend who ran one such program when my cell phone rang.
“Danvers,” I answered without checking the number.
“What the hell happened this weekend?” Hunter’s voice came through the line.
“A lot,” I replied. “What’s the update?”
“Whatever you did, you’ve got them scrambling,” he said. “My man said that shit is getting tense. Anders is on the warpath. He’s demanding private meetings. Firing his people left and right. He even turned three pack members rogue yesterday.”
“What about Sutton’s sister?”
“I haven’t seen her around,” he said. “The last I spoke to Wesley, she was supposed to be going home. The was last week. Seeing as she was making herself pretty visible before, I’d say she made it back to Dranfort.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. That was one less thing for Sutton to worry about. And I had received a finalized response from another research facility that would be providing her youngest sister’s medication from now on. So that was another concern taken care of.
“What about the information from Sutton’s mother?” I asked. “Any indication he has it?”
“That’s harder to say,” Hunter replied. “But we did find out that there is a safe.”
“A safe?”
“In his private quarters. A pretty impressive one apparently,” he continued. “He renovated the wing about five years ago and this safe was supposedly the biggest expense. I’m waiting on the building plans and blueprints to see if they elude to anything useful.”
“Keep on that,” I instructed. “What else have you found?”
“You were right about possibly needing to call the Council in for an inspection of his new factories,” he told me. “They have hella tight security going on. But the shipments coming out will give us a better opportunity to see what he’s up to. There’s one scheduled in three days. If that fails, infiltrating with the Council may be our only option.”
“Let’s avoid that if possible,” I said. “For now, just keep me updated. And reach out to Wesley to make sure he keeps Sutton’s sisters away from Anders.”
Hunter hesitated before he responded. “I’m pretty sure that’s his intentions…”
“But?”
“That girl may have other ideas,” he said.
“What do you mean?” I pressed. “Are you talking about Hannah?”
“Yeah, I said she wasn’t hiding away while she was here,” he explained. “But it was more like she was making sure to make her presence known. While she was supposedly supposed to be helping with the search for Sutton, I’m not sure what she helped accomplish. Either way, she wouldn’t make it long if she came back. She is a joke with the pack members. They despise her presence.”
“That’s not a surprise,” I said. “Soloman confirmed her sisters are actually human.”
“Yeah, but the problem is she has no idea,” Hunter stated. “She’s completely clueless to the fact that they are all turning their noses up at her. They’d use her for hunting practice if they were given the opportunity.”
“Hence why we need to make sure that Wesley keeps her home where she belongs,” I said. “Sutton has enough to deal with.”
“Speaking of… are you really not going to tell me what you did that got Alpha Anders and Beta Mason so riled up?”
I chuckled smugly. “We marked each other,” I said. “But only after Beta Mason had seen that his pathetic mark on Sutton had already faded.”
“Ha,” Hunter scoffed. “Yeah, that would do it. And in that case, I don’t see them having any reason to bring either of the Lanston girls back into the territory. So, we should be in the clear.”
“I’m not too sure about that,” I said. “Just keep an eye out. And find a way into that safe.”
I disconnected the call and returned to work. I wanted to get done so I could give Sutton the update in person. I pulled up a stack of reports that needed reviewing to get to work when Sutton linked me.
‘Good morning,’ she said sweetly.
I grinned. ‘Good morning, princess. Are you just getting up?’
‘No, I called Tarah and filled her in on everything she’s been missing,’ she replied. ‘Which led to her telling the other girls.’
‘It’s a good thing we weren’t keeping it a secret,’ I chuckled.
‘Yes, well, Narya and Lorelei messaged to ask if I wanted to go to lunch with them to celebrate,’ she said. ‘They also mentioned something about starting to plan the Luna ceremony, but I’m not sure about getting into that. Either way, I don’t want to leave Jack here alone.’
‘It’s never too early to get ideas, princess,’ I told her. ‘I’ll be done early. I’ll see you before you go. Is Jack up yet?’
‘I don’t think so,’ she replied.
‘Alright. I’ll see you soon. I love you,’ I reminded her.
‘I love you, too.’
