I had to admit the find was pretty exciting. I definitely wanted to do whatever we could to restore the piece and bring it back to its full glory. However, we wouldn’t be able to determine how possible that would be until we got everything cleared away.
“What do you think, Jack?” I asked him. “You want to give us a hand getting some of this done.”
“Yeah,” he said surprisingly quick, jumping in to start pulling brush away. “How do you lose a fountain?”
We got to work clearing away the overgrowth around the fountain. Tanjie entertained us with a history lesson about the estate and the grounds, including how the fountain came to be. Nova was especially fascinated with the tale. The more we uncovered, the more the story started to come to life. All along the base of the fountain were intricate carvings that told the Alpha Baron’s and his mate’s love story. It was still a beautiful tribute, even in the dilapidated state it was in. Luckily, Tanjie was confident we would be able to bring it back to life.
It was just after sunset when I started to slow down and get pretty tired. Most of the crew had been sent home, but a few stuck around. Not complaining about the overtime. But I was starting to feel guilty keeping them from their families, so I figured it was time to wrap it up for the day.
“Why don’t Jack and I take this last load to the discard site while you guys pack it up for the evening,” I suggested to the group. “I want everyone rested up for tomorrow.”
I tipped my head toward Jack for him to join me. I hefted a wheelbarrow half-filled with stones and headed toward the dump location. It was too heavy for either of us to tip over safely, so we started to lift a few out to make it easier. Jack had one end of a large rock while I lifted the other when the hair on the back of my neck stood on end.
Nova came rushing to the front of my consciousness. Sensing whatever it was that had me suddenly on edge.
‘Danger,’ she indicated.
My eyes darted around the area. Something was definitely off even if I couldn’t put my finger on what. But I didn’t want to alarm Jack, so I tried not to panic. Besides, there was a group of people less than 50 yards away.
“You know what bud,” I said, keeping my eyes on the shadows around us, “let’s just leave this here. It won’t hurt anything. Someone will take care of it in the morning.”
“You sure?” he asked.
“Yeah, lets head back.”
We turned to rejoin the others but were stopped in our tracks as a figure stepped out from the trees in front of us, blocking our path. Nova growled low and vicious in my head.
“That’s not going to happen,” a deep, scratchy voice sounded.
His back was to the light so I couldn’t see his face, but I there was no missing how much bigger than me he was. I put an arm around Jack’s shoulders, my eyes darting around the figure toward the others.
“Don’t even think about screaming,” the man said.
I pushed Jack behind me protectively. My heart racing in my chest. My senses heightened. I felt Nova push to the end of the barrier, ready to shift the moment it was needed. The only problem was — I wasn’t fast enough yet. My shift still took seconds longer than everyone else. It was enough to make the difference between life and death. And I still couldn’t hold the half-way form of a lycan.
Our best bet was escape. I knew there was a small foot path through the trees nearby that lead straight to a guard house. I linked Jack showing him where.
‘When I tell you… run.’
“Don’t make this harder then it has to be,’ the voice rasped as he closed the distance between us. “Just come with me and no one will get…”
“Now,” I yelled, swinging my claws forcefully.
They made purchase across the man’s chest but it wasn’t enough to debilitate him. Instead, he let out an enraged growl as he swung at me, lifting me off the ground and throwing me through the air. I landed on the wheelbarrow hard, my momentum knocking it and myself to the ground. My legs tingled from the impact on my back and I had hit my head on something.
I scrambled to get to my hands and knees, looking up in time to see a half-formed lycan leaping in front of Jack as he ran for the trail. He hovered over the boy. He began to raise his arm.
“No…”
I don’t know where the strength or speed came from, but I was on my feet and bounding toward them in an instant. Nova pushed the shift and I started to change. I’d never shifted mid-run before, so I wasn’t far into the process by the time I closed the distance. I threw myself between them, wrapping Jack in my arms just as the man’s hand came down.
I screamed as his claw sliced through the flesh of my back with enough force to send us flying once again. I rolled to get away. Coming to a stop with Jack curled up beneath me. My arms protecting his head.
The pain was excruciating. I wasn’t able to hold a shift anymore. My vision began to blur as my head pounded. I was desperate to keep Jack covered. Keep him protected even if it was the last thing I did. I waited for another blow but it didn’t come. I began to register a chorus of snarls and growls behind me.
The other must have heard… Thank the goddess… I didn’t know how much longer… I’d stay… conscious.
