Lui's POV
"Tamara, can you please fetch me a towel?" I asked huskily without taking my eyes off my mate.
"Okay," she answered.
"If you don't mind, please go with Yuki," I said.
"What, why?" Yuki asked loudly.
"Yuki, let's go, no more questions," Tamara said.
When I glanced at them, I noticed how Tamara was pulling her by the hand.
I watched as they left the training field, leaving me alone with my mate.
What exactly was I supposed to say to Akira now that we had the privacy I needed?
"Alpha, you are making me uncomfortable with your gaze," she said as I averted it for a second and then looked at her again.
"My hand," she whispered.
"Yes, your hand," I whispered huskily.
When she giggled, I smiled widely. She had a very beautiful smile, and her dimples made my heart flutter.
"Akira!" Xiao called through the pack's mind-link.
She quickly pulled her hand away and took a step back.
"Dad, I'll be with you shortly," she answered and then turned to leave when I grabbed her shoulder.
"Tell me I'm not insane, please," I pleaded.
I just wanted to hear the confirmation I knew from her mouth.
She turned and faced me seriously.
"You are not crazy, Alpha," she answered.
"Lui," I corrected.
"Lui, you are not insane," she said.
"We are mates, right?" I asked seriously.
She kept quiet for a few seconds and then nodded.
"Say it," I commanded as she frowned.
Was I coming off too hard? I wondered to myself.
"We are mates, Lui," she said seriously.
"Then why did I not know all this time?" I asked.
"I also don't know, but perhaps it's because it took time for my wolf to awaken," she answered.
"What do you mean by that?" I asked seriously.
"My vampire abilities were awakened before you even went to the camp. The problem was that I was too weak, and whenever I went out, I had a strong thirst to feed. Every pack member looked like a walking bottle of water and food to me. I couldn't control myself, that's why my parents decided to keep me indoors. To be honest,I loved that idea because I didn't want to hurt anyone or disappoint Alpha Damon, who was our leader. I refused to give in to my instincts, that's why I kept away from everyone," she said as I felt bad knowing the truth.
"When you left for camp, my wolf awakened. It was surprising because we all thought she would awaken sooner. I mean, my parents had to lie that she had already awakened to keep our pack members from looking at me differently. When she awakened, the thirst I usually couldn't control became controllable, and I finally got to socialize with everyone as I wished and wanted to," she said.
"So you are saying that I and my wolf couldn't sense you as our mate because you hadn't awakened yet?" I asked seriously.
"Yes, but also it may be because I avoided you and rarely crossed your path. Perhaps it was because I was a hybrid," she answered.
I brushed my hand through my hair and then turned for a second before turning back to face her.
"So, this is when you realize what we are to each other?" I asked seriously.
"Yes," she answered and then smiled sadly.
"What? What is it?" I asked in concern.
"Lui, you don't have to accept me as your mate," she answered, leaving me astonished as my wolf growled angrily.
"Why is that? Do you have a lover or someone you have set your eyes on?" I asked coldly, holding in a growl.
Her smile faded as she looked at her hand and then at me.
"What's wrong?" I asked in concern when I saw tears fill her eyes.
"I don't, Alpha, but you do, don't you?" She asked.
I was about to tell her no when Tamara came to mind.
"I saw how you looked at her back then, and I think a few pack members noticed it too. Only those who paid less attention to you didn't notice. You love her, don't you?" She asked as I swallowed hard.
"Lie," came my wolf's command.
I wanted to lie, but I just couldn't do that to my mate.
"I do," I answered honestly as a tear rolled down her cheek.
"I have actually loved her from the very first day I had set my eyes on..."
"That's enough," she whispered in a cracked voice and then turned to leave.
"But that doesn't mean I'm going to choose her," I said seriously.
She turned and looked at me with a shocked expression on her face.
I moved, closing the space between us and then lifted my hand, pressing it on her cheek gently.
"I want you, my mate," I said softly as tears rolled down her cheeks.
"But you are in love with her," she whispered.
"Feelings do change with time, Akira. Do you know how I felt when I realized that you were my mate? I was very shocked but my wolf was very happy. I wasn't shocked just because you were my mate, I was shocked over how beautiful you are and I just knew that I wanted to gaze at you forever. So listen to me when I say that I want to be with you," I said.
She wrapped her arms around my shoulders and began sobbing as I smiled and embraced her.
If there was something I learned from my parents and pack members, it was that a mate was who we needed to be with and love. The moon goddess made no mistakes, no matter what. We were the ones who did by rejecting who we were destined to protect and stay loyal to.
I didn't know how I was going to get over Tamara, but I was going to try one way or another because she too wouldn't want me to hurt Akira for my own selfishness and greed.
I pulled back and wiped away her tears.
"Stop crying, okay? Anyone who sees us will think that I was bullying you," I said as she laughed softly.
"Although I would love to bully you, just not in such a way," I said when I dropped my hand.
She stopped laughing and just stared back at me. I was about to lean in and kiss her when Xiao's voice came through.
"Should we tell them?" I asked in a low tone.
She smiled but shook her head.
"I'll wait for the day you will fall in love with me. Only then can you tell them the truth," she answered and then took a step back when Xiao came into view.
I wanted to disagree, but then again, I remembered how I had no right to because I was the one in love with another.
