Kyle's POV
We were back on the road, and I was feeling tired. We slept in a hotel and continued our drive the next day.
"I don't remember our way from camp being this long when going," I said lazily as my father laughed.
"Well, that's because I took the long road this time. The short one is under construction," he answered as I frowned deeply.
"You could have told us beforehand, father. And just so you know, I would have been happier to travel in my wolf form than being in this car for hours," I said seriously.
"And the damn luggage?" He asked with a raised brow.
"Someone could have brought it to the pack. You are a big shot on that side; I'm sure someone would have made arrangements," I answered as he smirked and then kept quiet.
I closed my eyes and decided to just rest for a few hours. Now that I was much calmer and at peace with myself, I was thinking about a lot of things, and among those things was a way to visit Tamara.I heard no news about her in all those years, and I was worried.
I was startled by the sudden stop of the car that instantly opened my eyes.
The pack house was showing miles away, and the border was in front of us.
"Father, is there something wrong?" I asked seriously.
"No," he answered and then looked at Larson in the rearview mirror as he looked back at him.
"I wanted to talk to you and Larson about something before we reach the pack house," he said, making me frown.
"What seems to be the problem, uncle?" Larson asked seriously.
"A few days ago, your mother and I sat down to discuss a few things with Toni and Neo," he answered.
"What was the discussion all about?" I asked curiously.
"Have you noticed that I am not getting any younger?" He asked as I sighed heavily, feeling annoyed at his question.
A second ago, we were all attentive, fearing for the worst! Now he was cracking jokes!
"Uncle, you seriously don't look bad. You still look like you did years ago," Larson answered, making him smile.
"That's good, son, but I don't mean physically," he answered.
"What does that even mean?" I asked loudly.
"Ever since I was born, I lived for my pack and to be the best there was. When I met your mother, I began seeing things differently, and as I grew older, there were a few things I regretted not doing. For example, like taking a vacation or renting a place in human territory and just spending my days there lazing around with your mother. I miss exploring uninhabited Alpha territories or just seeing your mother in a wedding dress. I know our kind rarely do that, but it would be a great experience," he answered as I glared at him.
"So in short, you want to experience life as humans do, is that it?" I asked.
"No, in short, I want to live a life free from responsibility and worrying. As I am speaking to you now, your mother and Neo are finishing up the paperwork,"he answered, confusing me.
"Father, what exactly are you trying to say?" I asked seriously.
"I am saying as of today, you are to step up as the Alpha of the pack," he answered, leaving me stunned.
"What?" Larson asked loudly.
"You too, son, you are going to step up as the acting Beta because Toni and Neo will be leaving for Whitney's pack," he answered.
"Father, is this some kind of test? Is this how you want to see if we learned well?" I asked at the top of my voice.
"I knew you would think like that," he whispered.
"Well, yes, because this has never happened before, and the Ian I know would never just say that and step down," I answered as he smiled.
"People change, and leaders retire. I am not saying I am retiring right now, but I am telling you that I'll step back and let you take over for as long as I am away. I don't want all the pack members to know about this because some won't easily give in to my decision, and that may only anger me and make me hurt them.So your mother and I decided to leave with only a few people knowing about this," he answered.
"I understand, Uncle. If you truly need the rest, then the pack will be left in good hands. Kyle and I can handle things on our own," Larson said as I angrily looked at him through the rearview mirror.
Why was he speaking up as if he was the Alpha when I was? I wasn't okay with the decision at all!
"Son, I am not asking you as your father. I am ordering you to take over until my return as your Alpha," he said seriously as I flinched.
There he was, the Ian we all knew. He was an amazing father, but as an Alpha, he was strict and at times a little distant.
"Don't go against him; we should know our place," my wolf warned.
"I understand. I will do my best to look after the pack," I answered seriously.
"That's my pup," he said proudly and then started the car.
As he drove, I kept on thinking about his words.
I still couldn't understand why he wanted to live such a life, even if it were for a few weeks. It seemed absurd and rushed. I was beginning to believe it was a test.
I was very confident in my abilities as an Alpha and leader; that's why I was going to do everything in my power to show him that the pack was in good hands.
"We are here," he said, pulling me out of my thoughts when he parked the car opposite the pack house entrance.
I raised a brow and got out while looking around. There was no one around when it was clear they must have known about us coming.
"Where is everyone?" Larson asked once he was out of the car.
"Busy with their daily work," father answered and then stepped out.
"Weird," I muttered, then walked into the pack house while dragging my feet that felt a little sore.
When I inhaled a lot of different scents coming from the living room, I smirked.
Were they all waiting for me to greet them? If that was the case, then I wasn't going to disappoint them.
"They are obviously in the living room," Larson said in a whisper behind me.
"The luggage?" I asked in a low tone.
"Uncle Ian said he got it," he answered.
"Right," I whispered and then walked to the living room.
Immediately as we walked in, I got startled.
"Surprise!" The pack members and my family screamed happily.
I looked at them and smiled happily.
"Mother," I whispered and then quickly rushed to embrace her, while Larson wasted no time to hug his parents too.
We were finally back home and seeing the family we dearly missed.
