August's POV
"Are you okay? Your hand is shaking, and you haven't said much in an hour," Teresa asked in concern.
I leaned forward and grabbed a cup of coffee that was on the table. The coffee had been given to me half an hour ago, and it was now cold. I carefully moved it to my lips, and it spilled a bit.
"Mom, is he like... You know... like... not well?" her daughter asked softly.
She was leaning against the living room's door frame, looking at me with a concerned expression.
"He is fine, I think. So don't worry," Teresa answered and then quickly grabbed the cup from my hand before I could put it back.
"Hey, you are now scaring me. What seems to be the problem?" She asked softly as I frowned deeply and then leaned in without warning and kissed her lips lightly.
I was about to deepen the kiss when my wolf growled at me and took partial control, forcing me to pull back.
"Nothing," I whispered in disbelief.
I felt nothing from the kiss! How was that even possible?
Whenever I kissed her lightly, I felt happy, and whenever I deepened the kiss, I got easily aroused, whether in a public place or not.
"Am I invisible here or what?" My mate asked in a cold tone.
"Oh, darling, I'm so sorry. Today, August seems not to be well," Teresa answered seriously and then moved her hand to my cheek.
"Let me grab the car keys, okay? We need to go to the clinic because I don't think you are fine," she said as I shook my head.
"Take me home, I really need to be home right now, not the clinic," I whispered.
"Of course, just let me grab the car keys," she answered and then stood up and walked out of the room.
"Don't look at our mate, don't even think about her," I told myself silently and then lowered my gaze.
When her scent got stronger, I found myself looking up.
She stood in front of me with a pained expression on her face.
"Are you okay?" she asked and then moved her hand to my forehead.
I immediately felt at ease as the tingles spread throughout my body.
"You look much more relaxed now, what a relief," she whispered as my eyes went to her lips.
I swallowed hard and then closed my eyes, trying so hard to avoid what I was dying to do.
I desperately wanted to know how her lips would feel against mine and how my body would react.
"Found them," Teresa's voice came through.
I quickly opened my eyes and stood up, walking away from her.
"Let's go," I said loudly when she walked into the room.
"Sure," she answered and then got startled when her landline phone rang, which was at her work desk a little further away from us.
"Give me a minute," she said and then quickly went to pick it up as I focused my gaze on her.
"What? Right now? But today is my day off!" She exclaimed.
"No, I am not disobeying our boss's orders. It's just that today I wanted to spend some quality time with my daughter before she goes back to her father's place," she said as I frowned and looked at my mate who was looking back at me.
Going back? When?
"I'll be going back tomorrow," she said in a low tone, surprising me.
Were my words out loud? No.
How the hell did she know what I was thinking about?
"I wasn't thinking about that and I said nothing," I defended myself.
She giggled cutely and then sighed softly.
"You are so easy to read," she answered simply.
I was about to argue over that when Teresa disconnected the call.
"Tanya, darling, can you do me a favor?" she asked.
"Sure, mother," she answered calmly.
"It seems I have to go in today. There is a client coming over at the office, and my boss is going crazy because he wants me there. I wanted to give August a ride, but sadly, we will be going different ways, and I can't afford to be late. So please be a dear and drive him home on my behalf," she said as I quickly shook my head.
"No, I'll take a taxi," I answered at the top of my voice.
"What are you doing? You are making us look bad in front of our mate," my wolf growled at me angrily.
"That's not happening. Tanya will drive you home, and it's not up for discussion," she said and then quickly moved in front of me and tip-toed, kissing my cheek.
"I'll call you as soon as I knock off. We can maybe get dinner and spend some time alone," she said when she pulled back.
"Sure," I answered, then forced a smile across my face.
She went to Tanya and kissed her cheek lightly.
"Be nice and don't forget to lock the door when you leave," she said and then quickly rushed out.
I stood there not knowing what to do or how the heck everything was happening. It was like the universe was trying to force me to get to know my mate.
"So, I guess we are all alone now," she said as I chuckled nervously.
"Right," I murmured.
"Don't worry, I won't do anything stupid. Back then when I asked you for a date, I had no idea you were my mother's lover," she said as I cleared my throat.
"Fiancee," I corrected.
"Right," she answered in a low tone, making me look at her.
She looked very sad, and I felt so bothered.
Without much restraint, I found myself going to her side and pulling her into my embrace as my wolf purred. We both felt satisfied and at peace just having her in our arms.
I hated the face she was making, and I hated how her voice sounded.
When she hugged me back, I quickly snapped out of my trance and took a few steps back.
"No, this won't do. I'll take a taxi, thank you so much for everything," I said in a husky voice and then turned to walk out when she grabbed my wrist.
"Please let me drive you to your house. Please," she pleaded.
I took in a deep breath and then released it.
"No, tell her no," I told myself silently.
I was about to say just that when my wolf took over.
"It would be a delight to have you by my side," he said as I tried to take back control but he couldn't let me.
"Don't do anything crazy! We can't have her, you know that!" I screamed loudly but that only made him ignore me even more.
He turned and looked at her, then smirked when she looked at us with a stunned expression on her face.
"Were your eyes golden all along or am I seeing things?" She asked then chuckled nervously.
We could tell how unsettled and uncomfortable she was.
"I am sorry for not mentioning this. But my family and I have a rare condition.Whenever we are angry, happy, sad, excited, or aroused, our eyes change to a golden color," he answered as she raised a brow.
"What do you take her for, a child? Your nonsense from a fantasy made-up book won't make her believe your words. She might as well call the damn cops on us or, much worse, tell Teresa about this!" I screamed at the top of my voice.
"That's kind of cool. I just hope it's not a disease," she said and then smiled warmly, shocking the shit out of me as my wolf chuckled.
"What the hell is happening?"
Was all I could say because I was in so much shock over what I was witnessing.
