Tanya's POV
"Darling, we should get going; your father must be tired of waiting," my mother said as I looked at my phone sadly.
It was six pm going on seven, and August was nowhere to be seen. I knew it was too good to be true when he promised to come and see me off, yet I chose to believe him. I felt like the biggest loser because I was still hoping that he could appear out of nowhere and smile at me.
"I am waiting for someone to deliver something I ordered online," I lied.
"Tanya, you have been saying this for hours now, yet no one has come. I told you, you can't stay with me. So if this is your way of not going back, it won't work. I will be traveling out of the country for some days, and I can't just leave you here alone. You are not a kid, but you aren't an adult either," she said as I stood up from the couch, grabbed her car keys which were on the table, then rushed out of the living room as she followed while calling out my name.
I got into the car, locked the door, and then started it as she ran to the side, hitting on the window and screaming for me to talk to her and stop the madness.
I ignored her, reversed the car with a rapidly beating heart, and then drove off.
I wanted to hear it from his very own mouth why he had chosen to break off his promise. Was he doing this to me because I was younger and looked naive?
Why?
As I drove, tears filled my eyes, and my breathing became labored.
I felt so desperate and empty, like I would lose something very precious to me if I didn't see him.
"It will all be fine when you see him," I whispered to myself as a way of comfort.
When I reached close to the blue house, I parked the car near the driveway, feeling relieved, and then got off, looking around.
The area had very few houses, and they were a little further away from each other. But that didn't matter because I was going to go house by house, knocking if that was what it took to find him!
I began walking, looking around and thinking about which house to start from.
"August's mate," a familiar voice called from behind.
I quickly turned and faced the man who had red hair with a nervous smile.
"Hi," I greeted in a respectful tone.
"Hey, what are you doing in our neighborhood?" he asked when he moved closer.
"I came here to say goodbye to August. Sadly, I had no idea which house was his. I would have asked my mother about it, but she's at work at the moment, and my phone is very low. You know August is more like a family friend, so leaving like that...,"
"Would you like to come with me? August stays with us; he is my family," he asked, cutting me off.
"Yes, please," I answered happily.
"Good," he whispered and then began to walk as I followed behind him.
After some minutes, he made a turn and walked towards a huge mansion.
"I hope you aren't cold," he said when we reached the doorstep of the mansion.
"No, I am fine," I answered simply.
Before he could grab the door handle, the door swung open.
"You are late Chase, don't you know that today I'm craving for your juicy blo....," the lady cut her sentence short when she met my eyes.
She looked at the man with a raised brow as if demanding an explanation.
"She was walking around the area looking for August," he answered as the woman rubbed her hand against her forehead.
"Damn it. Kid, follow me, I'll show you his room," she said and then turned and began walking.
I gave the man a smile and quickly followed the woman.
"Here, go in and keep it down," she said when she reached a certain door.
I knew they could be dangerous or lying to me, but I trusted them for some reason.
I opened the door and walked in with a rapidly beating heart. The very first thing I inhaled in the room was August's amazing scent.
I closed the door behind me and moved close to the bed, looking around.
When I heard movements coming from the room opposite and the sound of running water, I smiled.
He was obviously in there, and all it took was a few steps to see him, but I felt stuck.
The water was turned off, and a low growl came from the room, startling me.
"There is no fucking way she is here!" He yelled loudly.
I heard loud footsteps approaching, and then the door opened.
He stood at the bathroom entrance with widened eyes.
I knew I had to keep my composure in check, but I couldn't. I felt as if my heart would stop from the mere sight of how he looked.
He had a towel wrapped around his waist, and water was dripping from his wet hair to his skin.
I swallowed hard and opened my mouth to say something when he walked past me with an angry expression on his face. He grabbed the phone from his bed and pressed it.
"Did you run away from home?" He asked as I frowned deeply.
"Teresa must be worried! My phone was off because I was trying to avoid Whitney, fuck! If I knew, I would have kept it on!" He said loudly as I angrily walked to him and tapped his back.
"What?" He yelled as I held my breath in fear.
He brushed his free hand through his hair and then turned to face me.
"Did you run away from home?" He asked again, then looked at his cellphone which was now ringing.
"I did not," I answered in a small voice.
"Yeah, right," he said and then pressed the answering button. He was about to move the phone to his ear when I grabbed it and turned it off.
"Hey!" He yelled as I furiously looked him in the eyes.
"Why!" I screamed at the top of my voice, not caring if I was heard by the lady or that man.
"Why what?" He asked as I clenched the phone.
"Why did you lie to me? Why did you break your promise?" I asked seriously as I blinked back the forming tears.
"Kid, I don't know if you realize this or not, but adults do work. We have something that we call a job, and me driving all the way just to say a silly goodbye won't put food on my table. Since you are dumb to understand this and very slow to process things, I'll tell you again. I am not your lover, boyfriend, or whatever you kids call your relationships nowadays. I am your mother's man and fiancé, and very soon I'll be your stepfather. You putting your lips on me and acting as if we are intimate is disgusting and sick. So why don't you run back home and act like a decent lady a man would want," he said as I shifted my gaze to the side with a painful heartache.
I didn't want to cry, but tears couldn't stop falling down my cheeks.
It was very hurtful for him to insult me with such harsh words.
Did he think I didn't know how sick and disgusting I was? I understood how weird I was and that people would laugh at me and call me worse names if they found out about my feelings. Yet I came here because I couldn't help myself or fight what I was feeling.
"I am so sorry for everything. I guess you are right, I do need help for my disgusting actions," I whispered and then leaned forward and put the cell phone on the floor.
I was about to walk past him when he grabbed my hand.
"Tanya, I didn't mean it like that," he whispered as my sobs began to get loud.
"It's okay," I whispered back and then tried to pull my hand away but he couldn't barge.
When his arms went around me, I tensed.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered and then rested his head against mine as I tried to lower my voice but I couldn't.
I was truly helpless and hopeless for still wanting a man who was saying such hurtful words to me.
