August's POV
I was woken up by the sound of heavy rain pouring. I looked at Teresa and noticed how she was already deep in sleep.
After the conversation that took place, I decided to stay for supper just to be sure they were both okay. After eating, I was about to leave when she insisted I spend the night with her. At first, I really wanted to reject her offer, but then again, I didn't want her to wonder what was wrong, because there had never been a day I had refused such an offer. I agreed and went on to take a bath with her, making sure my eyes weren't on her body.
When it was time for bed, she tried to touch me, but I felt nothing again. I had to lie and tell her I was very tired and stressed out throughout the day to make her back away, which worked. We lay down and soon fell asleep in each other's arms until the sound of rain woke me up.
I yawned, then stood up carefully and went out of the bedroom to the kitchen to get a glass of water.
Once I had drunk the water, I walked back to her bedroom, ignoring the loud sound of thunder. I stopped suddenly when I heard a very low whimper coming from Tanya's bedroom.
I stood still, thinking hard about whether it was a trap that she was setting for me or if she was really in pain.
When she whimpered again, I found myself rushing into her room and closing the door behind me.
I looked at her and saw that she was still asleep on top of the sheets, hugging herself in a curled circle.
I moved closer and carefully looked at her face, which was wet with tears. By the sound of her breathing, I could tell that she was still deep in sleep.
When the thunder struck again, she whimpered as tears continued to roll down her cheeks.
I didn't know what to do or how to react. If I had to wake her up, she would think I was here for an indecent reason, and telling Teresa could only bring suspicion. Pulling the sheets from below her could also wake her up.
I was out of options so far.
"Check her wardrobe," my wolf suggested.
I quickly went to her wardrobe and pulled it open, looking at the clothes carefully that were on the hanging wires.
"This will do," I whispered as I grabbed a long, thick coat and went back to her side, covering her carefully.
When the sound of thunder rumbled again, she whimpered.
"I'm scared, Dad. It's so lonely in this big mansion," she whispered as I swallowed hard and felt my heart ache.
I knew her father loved her a lot because of how Teresa talked about him, but could it be that he neglected her a few times because of work?
No, that was none of my concern. Now that she was covered, I needed to go back.
I turned to leave, but my feet couldn't move. I hated seeing her wet face and how vulnerable she looked.
"Damn it," I whispered to myself, and then slowly got onto the bed and lay next to her, wrapping my arm around her.
The good thing was that I could hear Teresa's movements whenever she turned in bed, so it was going to be easy to tell if she stood up or woke up. That way, I could quickly go back to bed. But right now, my mate needed me more than ever.
"Cold," she whispered.
"It will be warm soon enough, so please bear with me," I whispered as I moved her even closer than she already was.
This time, when thunder sounded, she let out a low sigh of relief that I, too, felt relieved.
I stayed awake, looking at her and hoping she wouldn't wake up until the rain finally stopped.
Before I could get out of bed, I kissed her forehead lightly and smiled.
"Good night, Tanya. Enjoy your dreams," I whispered, and then slowly got out of bed and stepped out of the room, going back to Teresa's. Once I was in, I looked at the huge clock that was hanging on the wall. It was close to morning, and soon Teresa was going to wake up because she never slept in late.
I got into bed and lay next to her, facing her seriously.
How was my married life going to be if I ended up marrying her and she stayed with her daughter? Was I going to fail to get rid of the feelings I had for my mate? Or was I going to manipulate her into letting her daughter go and never staying with us?
When she blinked a few times and opened her eyes, I forced a smile onto my face.
"Hey," I whispered softly and then pulled her into my arms.
"Why aren't you asleep?" she asked in a husky voice.
"I went to the kitchen to drink some water; that's why I am still awake," I answered simply.
"Should I give you head?" she asked as I laughed softly.
"And why would I let someone who is half asleep do that for me? You just rest and have happy dreams; I will soon fall asleep as well," I answered simply.
She yawned and then moved her hand to my chest.
"How can I go back to sleep when my husband is very much awake?" she asked teasingly.
"Seriously, Teresa, don't you have work today?" I asked back.
"I do," she answered.
"See, that's why I want you to rest and sleep more. You have to go to work; worrying about me won't do you any good," I said.
She rubbed my chest gently and then sat upright, looking at me.
"Should I make you a cup of coffee to help you relax?" she asked with concern.
That's one of the things I loved about her. She was very considerate and did her very best to take care of me.
I grabbed her hand and pulled her into my embrace.
"Just having you in my arms is enough, so don't worry much about me. I will fall asleep no matter what," I answered.
"I wonder if you are saying this just to have me take my mind off you," she said as I chuckled softly.
"No, ma'am, I really will fall asleep. So you better wake me up with a kiss goodbye before you leave for work. Failure to do so will result in a horrible penalty," I answered simply.
"Fine, I will do that. But if you don't fall asleep, I won't give you a kiss for two weeks," she said as I smirked.
