August's POV
I looked at Felix, then at Lee, who was eating in silence at the dining table. I wanted to wait for them to be done, but the looks they were giving me wouldn't let me wait.
"Do you have something to say to me?" I asked seriously.
Chase frowned and then looked at Jeannie, as if trying to ask her what was going on.
"You've been visiting Teresa awfully often nowadays, and you now spend more than a day there. Interesting," Felix answered.
"Well, she is my lover and soon-to-be wife, so spending a lot of time together isn't a bad thing," I replied.
"You are a joke," she mocked, then stopped eating.
“Are you sure you aren't? Because you are here pretending to eat human food,” I mocked her back.
“At least I'm pretending in front of my family, but you? Ha! It's in front of your so-called loyal wife-to-be,” she spat.
"Are you itching for a fight, Samantha?" I asked coldly.
"As if you can stand your ground against me," she answered and then stood up.
"Excuse me for a minute," she said and then walked out.
"Lee, I don't like the way you are looking at me," I said honestly.
"That's your problem, not mine," he answered simply.
"What's with everyone today?" I asked in a low tone.
Ever since they knew I had a mate, they began acting differently and funny.
"What's with you?" he asked back.
I was about to respond when I picked up Teresa's scent.
I stood up and faced the door, waiting for her to walk in. When she did, I smiled and approached her, kissing her on the cheek.
"Hey," I greeted softly.
"Hey," she greeted back and then looked at Felix, who walked past us and sat down.
"I'm sorry to come unannounced; I was close by. I thought I might as well pass through," she said with a smile.
"It's okay; please do join us," Chase answered in a very friendly tone.
I quickly moved and pulled out a chair that was next to mine.
"Thank you, darling," she whispered and then took a seat.
"So, how's work?" Chase asked.
"It's tiresome but okay," she answered simply.
"And life? When is the wedding, if you don't mind me asking?" Jeannie asked.
I glared at her and then averted my eyes from her.
"Life is amazing, and as for the wedding, we decided to tie the knot next month. We have been doing our own secret preparations whenever I am free, and I was thinking of informing a few of my close friends. To be honest, I don't want a grand wedding at all; I just want something simple," she answered, then looked at me and took my hand in hers.
"Wow, that's actually a good idea. I'm sure August would have told us about your plans in time," Lee said sarcastically.
"Oh, he didn't? I thought he did. I'm really sorry," she apologized.
"He is joking; please don't mind him," I lied.
"Oh, if that's the case, then he got me because I absolutely believed him," she answered and then laughed softly.
"Hey, aren't you supposed to be at work right now?" Felix asked seriously.
"Felix," I called in warning.
What was she trying to do? Chase her out of the house? She wasn't only sounding cold; she was looking at her as if she were food.
"About that, I didn't go to the office today because I was dropping my daughter at the station," she answered.
Instantly, my heart picked up.
"You don't say! Did she go for a visit?" Felix asked with a pleased expression on her face.
"No, she decided to go back to her father," she answered as I widened my eyes in disbelief.
"Really?" Felix asked with a smirk.
"Yes, you know teenagers these days; they are pretty stubborn and hard to understand. A few days ago, she ran away and made a fuss because she wanted to stay with me badly. But out of nowhere, she told me she wanted to go back because she was finally accepted into her dream college," she answered.
I felt the environment around me dim. I could see Teresa opening her mouth, but I couldn't hear any of her words. All I could hear was the sound of my heart beating.
When her hand tapped on mine, I blinked a few times and smiled.
"What were you saying?" I asked.
"Are you okay?" she asked back in concern.
No, I wasn't.
I was scared out of my mind, and my heart was beginning to ache badly. Sweat was also forming on my forehead.
"Yes, I'm fine," I lied.
"Did you not hear what she said? She said that her daughter will be leaving for another country the next day," Felix said with emphasis and then chuckled softly.
"Excuse me," I said, and then quickly rushed out of the room and went to my bedroom, grabbing my cell phone while looking at it.
How was I to call someone whose number I didn't have?
When she said all that to me,I took it as a joke! How would I have known that she was serious?
I couldn't believe she was rejecting me!
She clearly said we would only meet in the future when she became a working adult. Did that mean I had to wait for her for years?
"You chose Teresa over our mate," my wolf growled furiously.
"I did, okay? And I still am! But we just can't lose our mate no matter what," I yelled, then kept quiet.
"Not after how long we waited and dreamed about her," I whispered softly, and then rushed back to the dining room, where I found Teresa chatting happily with Chase.
"Teresa, can I take a look at your phone real quick?" I asked.
"Of course," she answered, then took it from her bag, which was hanging on her shoulder, and unlocked it.
"Here," she said softly as she handed it to me.
"Thank you," I answered, then went to her dialed calls. When I read Tanya's name with heart emojis, I smiled in relief.
I memorized the number and then closed the app, handing the phone back to her.
"August, are you seriously okay?" Felix asked.
She was really enjoying seeing me react in such a way.
"I am," I answered huskily, and then added the phone number to my contacts and saved it, mate.
I sat down and tried my best to keep myself calm, even though I was dying to run to the station and stop Tanya from leaving me.
I was going to do all
I could to have her return to me, no matter what. I wasn't going to lose my mate and go through the pain I had experienced in the past.
