Yuki's POV
"Tell him it's not his fault," my wolf urged.
"It's not your fault. I’ll make a call to Lui, and everything will turn out fine," I said softly, taking my phone from my bag and dialing his number.
A minute passed without the call going through. I looked at Kyle seriously.
"What?" he asked.
"The network is bad here, my call isn’t going through," I replied.
He pulled his phone from his pocket and tried. After a few moments, he sighed heavily.
"You're right, the reception here is terrible," he admitted.
"Let me walk ahead and try again," I said, quickly moving ahead.
I let out a scream when I lost my balance and fell, hurting my leg. Kyle ran over, kneeling beside me, quickly checking my leg.
"Ouch," I whispered when he touched my knee.
"Does it hurt that much?" he asked, concerned.
"Yes," I muttered, looking up as a few drops of water fell on me.
"You’ve gotta be kidding me," I said loudly as the drizzle turned into a downpour.
Kyle quickly lifted me in a bridal carry and walked back to the car. After helping me inside, he began looking around.
"Yuki, are we still in your pack’s territory?" he asked.
"Yes, we are. Human territory is far away. It takes hours just to reach it," I explained.
"So, the directions I was given weren’t to human territory, but to a part of your territory that’s a town?" he clarified.
"Yes. Some of our pack members choose to live alone or further away from the main pack," I confirmed.
"I see, but it’s getting late, and there’s no reception. Should we check out that cottage over there?" he asked.
I followed his gaze, surprised to see a cottage not too far on the left.
"They might be able to help us," he said, looking at me expectantly.
"I can't walk well, remember? My leg’s strained," I reminded him.
He smiled, moving closer and kneeling with his back to me.
"Our date’s already ruined as it is. I'm soaked, and we can't stay in the car all night. Hop on my back, and let's check out that cottage," he offered.
I hesitated but slowly climbed out of the car and got onto his back.
He stood up with me and began walking quickly toward the cottage as I held on tightly. It was cold, and the rain showers were still pouring, soaking us both.
"I hope I'm not too heavy," I whispered softly.
"You're not," he responded simply.
I smiled, brushing my wet hair back.
"I love the rain," I said honestly.
"Really?" he asked, sounding curious.
"A lot. Whenever it rained, I’d go outside just to feel it on my hand," I answered.
"Why didn’t you just let yourself get soaked in it?" he asked.
"My mother wouldn’t let me. That she-wolf is strict sometimes. Believe it or not, her nagging can make both me and Lui submit," I said, and he laughed.
"Sherry’s that tough, huh?" he asked.
"Of course. Isn’t Amelia the same?" I shot back.
"No, my mom’s different. She actually loves the rain too, but not to the point of getting soaked or wanting to feel it like you do," he replied.
"You’re lucky," I whispered.
"And so are you," he said.
"You’re right. We’re both lucky. Even though my mom’s strict, she’s the sweetest mother I know. I’m sure Amelia’s the same," I said.
"Yeah, she is. But when she’s angry, she scares the living daylights out of me and Lionel," he admitted, making me laugh.
"Okay, okay—between Ian and Amelia, who do you fear more?" I asked, still laughing.
"To be honest, I fear my mother more than I do my father. With Dad, it’s more about fearing to disappoint him, but with my mom, it’s the fear of getting my ass kicked," he said, making me laugh louder.
"Are you serious?" I asked, raising my voice in disbelief.
"Yes. Look, us males—we have an unspoken understanding. But the females, and I mean every single one of them, no matter what kind of being they are, are hard to read and understand. I never know how to react when my mother or grandmother is upset. All I can do is submit. That’s the only way I keep the peace, because I’m terrified of what they might do if I act all pompous," he explained.
"Is that why you always tried to make peace with me when I was angry or acting stupid?" I asked seriously.
"Well, yes, but that wasn’t the only reason. I always make peace with you because I don’t like it when you’re upset. I love your smile, and I adore your laughter—that’s the real reason," he answered.
I smiled happily and hugged him tightly.
"We're here," he announced as we approached the cottage.
"I can smell three different scents from that cottage—two humans and one of us," he whispered.
Unlike him, my senses weren’t as sharp. I could only pick up two scents.
"Hello?" Kyle called out loudly.
"Yes?" a male voice answered.
The door opened, and a male omega stepped out. The moment he saw us, he quickly took a few steps back, lowering his gaze in fear.
"Are you under Damon's protection and rule?" Kyle asked seriously.
"Y-yes, Alpha," he answered in a low tone.
"That’s a relief. Do you recognize the person I’m holding behind me?" Kyle asked.
The omega looked at me and then quickly dropped to his knees, surprising us both.
"Yes, that’s the soon-to-be Alpha’s twin sister," he said.
"I’m glad you know her. You may not know me, so let me introduce myself. I’m Kyle, Alpha Ian’s son, and Lui’s best friend," Kyle said, causing the omega’s eyes to widen in shock.
"A-Alpha Ian?" he stammered.
"Yes. Is there a problem?" Kyle asked.
"No," the omega answered quickly, lowering his gaze again.
"My mate and I were on a date when our car broke down. If it’s not too much trouble, may we stay here for a few hours? It’s late, and there’s no reception," Kyle explained.
The Omega looked at me with a concerned expression, fear evident in his eyes.
"Kyle, let me down," I said softly.
"But your leg..." he whispered.
"I'm fine. Although my healing takes time, I know how to manage the pain," I reassured him.
"Alright," he said, carefully setting me down.
I moved in front of the Omega, kneeling despite the slight pain that flared up.
"He won't harm you, I promise. Have you forgotten that I'm an Omega too? If you can't trust an Alpha, trust me. We just need a place to rest for a few hours. We'll leave quietly and won't trouble you again," I said gently.
"Okay... but I'm not alone," he replied.
"Who are you with?" I asked softly.
"Ordain, you can come out now. It's our Alpha's daughter," he called out.
We heard footsteps as a woman carrying a little girl stepped into view. They were both obviously human.
I had so many questions, my surprise overwhelming me.
"Tell him it's not his fault," my wolf urged.
