Dusk's POV
"You do not carry yourself like that when you throw a punch," my father said seriously.
"Forget it; what's the use of training now?" I answered seriously.
"Son, that's your problem. You always say this and give up so easily," he said with a concerned expression on his face.
"That's because I am weak, weaker than all the she-wolves in this pack," I answered sadly.
"Son, you are not weak. I agree you were born weak and were usually sickly, but since you got your wolf, you have grown stronger," he said.
"The only thing you have to work on is being less shy. You also have to train and exercise regularly. Don't you want to stand beside Lui as his Beta?" he asked as I smiled widely.
I really admired Lui and respected him a lot. Not only did he protect me a few times from those who mocked me, but he never judged or treated me badly at all.
I knew it was as if I were invisible to most pack members, but he was kind to me, unlike the others.
Day by day, I tried to train so I could be a worthy Beta capable of protecting him in return, but sadly, whenever I began, I lost faith and hope in myself.
"I'm just useless," I muttered softly.
"Lui, welcome," he said with a smile as I sighed heavily.
"Stop with your jokes, Father. I know you want to make me feel better, but you don't have to say that," I answered seriously.
"Soon-to-be Alpha, what brings you here?" he asked, ignoring me.
"Seriously, Father, stop. Lui can never come here or visit our house. Even if he wanted to, I see no reason because he could just mind-link you to come to the pack house," I pointed out.
He sighed softly and then shook his head.
"The only relevant being here is you, not me or the rest of us, so he can never come here," I said in a low tone.
"I see; you think so little of me," his voice came from behind.
I quickly turned and looked at him in shock.
He stood a few meters away from us with folded arms.
"Alpha," I said, then bowed low.
"You realize that the Alpha is my father, right?" he asked as he slowly approached us.
"I do b..ut … you are soon to be the acting Al..pha," I answered with a stammer.
Usually, when I was around someone I rarely talked to or a stranger, I stammered a lot since I was little; that's why I usually kept away from others. But then, that wasn't as bad as I acted towards females.
I failed to speak to them, and I ended up freezing just by looking at them. It's not that I was scared of them, but I felt so shy, and I couldn't find the right words to say. A few minutes would go by in silence, and they would end up finding me weird.
That's how they began calling me strange names.
"What brings you here, kid?" Father asked seriously.
"I came to talk to Dusk," he answered as I stood upright and pointed a finger at myself.
"Me?" I asked in disbelief.
"Yes, you," he answered.
I quickly looked at my father, trying to see if he was the one who had forced him to come over.
"To be honest, I am surprised by your sudden visit," he said seriously, so that I could know he had no idea as well.
"Well, Dusk is to be my Beta, yet we rarely talk. I have been bothered by that, but today I decided to just visit and talk things through," he answered, making my father smile happily.
"Is that so?" he whispered and then looked at me.
"Then I'll be inside the house. You have a nice chat," he said as I quickly shook my head.
"You will be alright, son," he mind-linked me and then turned and went into the house.
"Are you uncomfortable having me around?" Lui asked.
"No!" I answered in nearly a scream, then faced him.
"It seems like you hate my presence," he said as I quickly bowed low.
"I apo..logize," I stammered.
"It's okay, Dusk. So what are you doing?" he asked.
"Training," I answered in a low tone.
"Really, then would you show me a few moves you learned?" he asked.
I stood upright with widened eyes. I was in shock over how the tables were turning against me.
"I lied; I'm s...sorry. I wasn't training," I apologized.
He smiled and then moved closer, standing in front of me.
"Really?" he asked.
"I'm sorry," I whispered, then tried to smile back.
"So you can't train, and you can't speak properly. Not only that, you are so damn weak and so proud of it. You are totally weird with women and don't talk to them, yet you had the guts to talk to mine," he said as my smile faded.
"Don't you think you should step back from being my Beta? Try and convince your father and mine of how you are a pathetic excuse for a right hand, and they might reconsider," he said as I felt my heart ache.
"A...alpha, what are you saying to me?" I asked seriously.
"I am telling you to stay the hell away from my mate, you loser. Don't talk to her or even look at her," he said, then moved his hand to my shoulder, squeezing it tightly.
"I am telling you to give your position to another. A Beta is supposed to be next in line from an Alpha in terms of ruling, strength, and knowledge, but let's look at you, shall we?" he asked.
"You are weaker than an Omega; you can't fight or protect anyone. You will actually be the cause of this pack's downfall, and I don't want to cover your ass and work like a slave just because I have an incompetent Beta when I take over as Alpha. So, Dusk, back out," he said and then dropped his hand.
"I'm glad we had such a talk. Now then, I'll get back to the pack house. Enjoy your time with your father, who is an awesome Beta and right hand,” he said and then turned.
“It's such a shame that he cannot be my Beta, seeing how you can never change or prove me wrong," he said and then walked away.
"Alex, did he just tell us to die quietly without ever involving ourselves with him or the pack?" I asked in a low tone.
"Yes," my wolf answered coldly.
"Fine, if that's what he thinks of us and wants, then we will have to…"
"Change," came his response.
I kept quiet for a few minutes, surprised at his words. I thought it was better if we acted like we were dead. I hadn't thought of changing, but now I was considering it seriously.
I smiled and then walked inside the house.
He was right; what we needed to do was prove him wrong and show him how different we were.
"Father," I called loudly as I approached him in the living room.
"Yes," he answered.
He had an angry expression on his face.
"Don't say anything or go after him, please. Just do me a favor and help me out," I said as he frowned.
"Please help me change into a worthy Beta; I am begging you," I said and then bowed low to the waist.
"Fine, but you will have to do whatever I say without giving up or asking questions. Do you understand?" he asked seriously.
"Yes," I answered.
“Good,” he said and then smiled.
I was going to do everything in my power to be different.
The look of shock on Lui's face was going to be my reward.
"You do not carry yourself like that when you throw a punch," my father said seriously.
