Dusk's POV
"Maybe a little rest will do," my father said with concern.
"I don't need rest right now, Father. I want to be stronger and better," I answered seriously.
"You will with time, but all I am asking you to do right now is rest," he said.
I looked at him coldly and then nodded.
"Fine, I will rest," I answered and then went to sit on a beach that was under a huge tree.
The training field was wide and a large area that most warriors used. But there was a certain side that was considered a resting place. Only a few warriors came there to rest, and we figured it would be a good place to use for my training.
I hated being watched, and my father knew that. That's why I was relieved when he chose this place.
"You stay here; I'll be right back. Oh, and I'll ask your sister to bring you some cold water," he said and then walked away.
Micah was my cousin, but because my father took her as a daughter, she became my sister.
I paid no mind to that because I loved having her as a sister. I just hated when she went to see her father.
She usually ignored my existence just to talk to Daisy. Daisy was Debby's Alpha daughter, who hated our kind and tried to act like she was only human. I was supposed to be very understanding; sadly, I wasn't.
"Look who we have here," Lui's voice came from behind.
I quickly stood up and almost stumbled.
When I turned and looked at him, I bowed low to my waist.
"Soon to be Alpha, what brings you here?" I asked in a respectful tone, trying my best to speak properly.
"It's the training field," he answered, then moved and sat down.
"Sit," he ordered.
I hesitated but complied.
When he looked at me, I quickly lowered my gaze to the ground.
"I'm happy," he said softly.
I looked at him in shock.
"That day I said such harsh words to you; I wanted to see if you would take them as encouragement or close yourself off completely," he said, surprising me.
"Were you en... encouraging me?" I asked seriously, stammering.
"I was also mocking you," he answered, then smiled.
"You see, an Alpha and Beta aren't only the strength of the pack. They go through so much and withstand a lot. If the words I used made you cower and pull back, then it would have shown how my Beta wasn't capable of handling pressure or mockery," he said.
"But you decided to better yourself and work hard. That alone shows how strong you are. I believe that with time, you will be amazing in hand-to-hand combat and more. To be honest, you can even be greater than your father if you put your mind to it," he said as I smiled widely.
"If you become stronger, let's train and spa together," he said.
"Yes, and thank you, soon-to-be Alpha," I answered clearly and then laughed softly.
My wolf was yelping in joy over the acknowledgment we were receiving from him.
To us, he was still our Alpha, even if he wasn't officially given that position.
"Please call me Lui," he said, and then stood up as I did the same.
"See you around, and never give up," he said, and then began to walk away.
"Lui," I called loudly.
He stopped walking, turned, and looked at me.
"Yes, Dusk," he answered.
"Speak clearly and don't stutter," my wolf ordered.
"I will do my very best to be a very reliable Beta. I won't disappoint you," I said loudly.
"Of course, I know that. I can tell when one is being sincere, be it their words or actions," he answered and then smiled widely.
"Let's work hard together," he said as tears filled my eyes.
"Yes, Alpha Lui," I answered.
When he turned and walked away, I couldn't stop my tears from running down my cheeks.
It felt so good to be acknowledged and spoken to nicely by someone who wasn't a part of my family. In his tone, I could hear sincerity and feel that he was truly proud of me.
"I will work so hard, even if it hurts or kills me," I said, then swallowed hard.
When I picked up my father and Micah's scent, I quickly wiped away my tears and turned to face the other side.
"There he is. Dusk, how is he resting...," my father cut off his sentence.
Before I could turn, I was grabbed by the shoulder and turned forcefully.
My father was looking at me furiously, and his eyes were a golden yellow. His wolf was definitely partially in control and upset as well.
"Which one was it?" he asked in a deeper voice.
"What are you talking about?" I asked back.
I was startled when Micah threw the glass of water in her hand on the ground, shattering it.
She picked up a large broken piece and pointed it my way.
"Which bastard made you cry, Dusk? Who dared to mock my little brother?" she yelled strongly.
She was human, but at times, the way she acted was as if she weren't.
"Both of you should relax right now," I answered.
"No," came my father's cold response.
"No one bullied me," I said as Micah squirted her eyes.
"I am not lying; father, you can tell," I said loudly.
"Fine, then why are you crying?" he asked when his eyes turned back to their normal color and his wolf stepped back.
"That's because Alpha Lui paid me a visit," I answered.
"That little shit," he whispered.
"No, he didn't say anything harsh or bad to me. Rather, he praised and encouraged me. He even said if I continued and put my mind to it, I would become greater than you, father," I said as he smiled.
"He was right; if you set your mind to it, you can be greater than any Beta I know," he answered.
"Well, Lui is as kind as ever; I'm glad," she said and then dropped the broken glass piece on the ground.
"Now that I think about it, did you throw my water away?" I asked seriously.
"Oops, I'll be right back," she said, and then quickly ran back.
"I was planning on talking to Damon about Lui's actions and words. I'm really glad that I held back," he said.
"I am very happy you did," I answered.
He moved his hand to my head and ruffled my hair playfully.
"Once I'm done training you, he won't say a word but will just smile at you, always," he said seriously.
I smiled and then sighed softly.
"To be honest, I would love that too, and I believe that I will be a worthy Beta. So don't go easy on me, Dad," I answered happily.
“I won't,” he said, and then smiled at me.
