Ian's POV
"Are you sure they aren't close by?" I asked Neo.
"I am positive, Ian. Tamara, Lexi, and Yuki went to give Tanya a tour of our pack. As for Blade, Larson and Kyle, they went to help Nana and Sharon with something," he answered.
"Okay," I whispered, then cleared my throat and looked at everyone seriously.
"I'm glad to have you all here today, and I'm also kind of proud of you, August, for choosing your mate instead of some women who took you out of your misery," I said, then laughed softly when he rolled his eyes.
"The main reason I asked most of you to come over wasn't only because of August, but because of my son and nephew," I said, and then moved forward.
"I have wanted to take a step away from everything and finally step back from being an active Alpha for a few years now. Unfortunately, Amelia was against it because she knew Kyle wasn't ready. That's why we sent him to the training camp," I said seriously.
"But now Amelia and I truly believe he is ready. We have also seen amazing growth in Larson; that's why I am going to make sure that tomorrow they are both appointed as acting Alpha and Beta," I said.
"Truth be told, he wanted to do it in the coming week, but then again, he changed his mind," Neo said.
"So if it's not too much to ask, please spend a night here and be present on the day of the ceremony," I said.
Roxanne looked at Garren and held his hand with a smile. When she looked at me, I smiled back at her.
"Of course, Dad, Garren and I will spend the night here. Your grandson was so happy to remain with Jersey. I'm pretty sure he isn't even thinking about us because that boy is so attached to her," she answered calmly.
"Ian, you don't have to ask us, you know? You and Amelia are our leaders, and you are also family. We can never miss or be late for such a ceremony," Whitney said as she looked at the twins, then at Leo.
"I believe I speak for everyone," she said, and then looked back at me.
"Well, he does have to ask because I wouldn't follow his orders," Felix said in a mocking tone.
"Samantha," I called softly.
She sighed heavily and then folded her arms.
"Fine, we will stay as well; after all, my little girl will be right there showering Larson with her love. Also, Kyle is our nephew, so we can't miss it, even if we had something important to do," she answered.
I smiled and then looked at August with a raised brow.
"Who am I to say otherwise when my Alpha has already spoken?" he asked.
"You are a part of our family and a Beta who's capable of choosing what's best for yourself at the moment," Amelia answered seriously.
He chuckled and then moved to sit down.
"It will be a pleasure to see Kyle and Larson step up as Beta and Alpha," he answered.
"Thank you, everyone," I said, then frowned deeply.
"There is also something I wanted to discuss with all of you. The ceremony that is going to happen will be the ancient one," I said seriously.
"What?" the twins asked together loudly.
"You are kidding me, right?" Felix asked.
"No," I answered.
"Why are you all acting surprised as if the ritual is harmful or dangerous?" Uncle asked.
"That's because it has been long forgotten," Chase responded.
"I'm sorry to ask this, but what is an ancient ceremony?" Logan asked seriously.
"Right, you were never there when I took over as Alpha," I whispered.
"So in a normal Alpha succession ceremony, I give a speech and then announce to everyone how Neo and I have stepped down. Then Larson and Kyle step forward and give a little speech of their own, and then that's it," I answered.
"The ceremony is so simple, and it usually is okay, but in truth, I would still be the sole owner of the land and pack even if Kyle is the acting Alpha because I would still be bound to the territory," I said.
"I do not understand," Logan whispered.
"What Ian is trying to say is that, long ago, Alphas would seek the help of warlocks and witches to bind themselves to the land they inherited or occupied," Lee explained.
"You know how an Alpha always knows when an intruder crosses the border? Most think it’s because of their natural abilities, but in truth, it’s the binding spell cast by the witch or warlock that’s at work," he continued.
"Such a spell stays with them forever. Any land they inherit, take, or occupy instantly becomes theirs because the spell automatically takes effect. I have to admit, people like me are pretty awesome," he added with a proud grin. "The spell passes from generation to generation and can only be undone by the Alpha himself."
"So, when an Alpha wants to step down, he performs an ancient ritual ceremony. He makes a short speech and shares a cup of white wine mixed with wolfsbane with the soon-to-be Alpha," Lee concluded with a smile.
"Just in case you're wondering why," he began. "The white wine signifies renewal, and the wolfsbane symbolizes strength and power. As for the cup, it represents unity and trust," he explained.
"If the Alpha uses a glass cup that breaks easily, it’s considered a bad sign. But if the Alpha uses a wooden cup made from an old, sturdy tree, it signifies prosperity," he added simply.
"After the drink, the Alpha grabs a blessed dagger. A blessed dagger is an old dagger chosen and well taken care of by a fairy with magic. When he cuts his own palm, he lets drops of blood spill onto the territory's soil, and the soon-to-be Alpha follows suit," he said, then laughed softly.
"Quite a freaky show, isn’t it? Anyway, once that’s done, the spell bound to the current Alpha transfers to the soon-to-be Alpha, instantly making him the acting Alpha and binding him to the territory. Any land he later inherits, ambushes, or claims will also be linked to him," he concluded.
We all stared at him seriously.
"What?" he asked.
"You’re awesome," Felix said with a smirk.
"Thank you Samantha," he replied, then turned to me.
"I’m guessing you brought this up because you need Chase’s help with the dagger—and mine to organize everything?" he asked.
"Yes," I answered honestly.
"Do not worry; Lexi and I will make sure you lack nothing at the ceremony," he said, then got surprised, as I did, when everyone stood up.
"We will help out too," Whitney said.
"Um... question: will the soon-to-be Beta do the ceremony too?" Logan asked.
"No, he won't, because immediately after the soon-to-be Alpha does the ritual, the chosen Beta instantly becomes the acting Beta," I answered.
"Amazing," he whispered, making me chuckle.
“Last question: when the Alpha ambushes another territory and claims it as his own, what happens to the link of the previous Alpha?” Logan asked.
“Once an Alpha is killed by another or he or she abandons the pack, the link suffers,” he answered.
“Wow, just wow,” he whispered, making me grin.
Lee was truly impressive.
"Are you sure they aren't close by?" I asked Neo.
