Lui's POV
"Alright, what's with that look?" My father asked seriously in his office.
It was time that he asked me that question because I had been standing and looking at him for half an hour.
"Father, don't you think it's high time I took over as acting Alpha?" I asked seriously.
"Absolutely not," came his cold response.
"But why?" I asked at the top of my voice.
"You are not Kyle, and I am not Ian," he answered.
"That's a harsh response, Father, and seriously not cool," I said loudly.
He glared at me and then sighed softly.
"Son, I know that you really want to and feel like you should catch up to Kyle, your best friend, but this isn't the right time," he answered seriously.
"Have you forgotten how Dusk is trying his best to keep up with you? Not so long ago, he was struggling to talk to everyone or keep his foot on the ground at the training field?" he said as I felt guilty.
"Being an Alpha isn't about getting your way whenever you want something or someone. Being an Alpha is about putting yourself on the same level as those who can't keep up," he said softly.
"Encouraging others to do better despite having your own problems and pressures. Standing strong even when your heart or health is wavering," he said as I felt terrible.
I understood clearly what he meant, and now that I was seeing things from his perspective, I was coming off as selfish.
Dusk wasn't that bad in combat, but neither was he good, and for a Beta, that wasn't acceptable to some of the pack members.
He now talked more to the pack members, but there were times when he would stammer and run out of words to say. It was normal, but to some, it became a misunderstanding.
As much as the pack members loved his father, it was another story for him.
If only he were open-minded and friendly from his childhood, then the pack members would have still loved him despite being weak.
"I understand what you are saying, Father, but for how long should I wait for him to become the Beta that everyone expects him to be?" I asked seriously.
"That all depends on you and him. If you are always by his side, encouraging him and cheering him on, he will learn to stand on his feet stronger than he was," he answered.
He sure was wise, and at times he reminded me of Kyle. I also had a feeling that those words would be the exact words, if not similar words, that Kyle would tell me.
"I'm sorry; I guess I felt so left out, that's why I brought this up," I said, then smiled.
"Also, you are right. Dusk is my Beta, and he needs me more than ever. Instead of being selfish, helping him learn and become better should be my top priority," I said.
"I'll take my leave, and I'm sorry for disturbing you," I said, and then walked to the door.
"Lui," he called when I grabbed the door handle.
"Yes, Father," I answered without looking at him.
"I am very proud of you, and I know that you will be an amazing Alpha when you take over," he said.
I glanced at him with a smile and then walked out.
"Mother," I greeted when she walked towards me.
"How are you holding up?" she asked softly.
When I raised a brow, she chuckled softly.
"Without your sister by your side?" she asked.
"Well, I did okay at camp without her," I answered simply.
When she averted her eyes and sighed heavily, I grabbed her hands.
"Mother, you miss her a lot, don't you?" I asked in a low tone.
"Very much," she answered and then looked at me sadly.
"I have always known that she would leave this pack someday, but never did I ever embrace myself over this feeling of loneliness," she answered.
"My little pup was always by my side, baking with me and helping me out whenever she had time," she said, then frowned.
"She really knew how to make me forget that you were not around too when I missed you terribly," she said.
"Mother, I am starting to suspect that you might love her more than me," I teased.
"No, I love you both the same," she answered.
"I know, I was just teasing," I said softly.
"Mother, I don't know how you feel because you are a mother and I have no pup of my own. But what I do know is that Yuki is in good hands and she is missing you too," I said.
She smiled and then hugged me.
"I am glad that you will never leave this pack. At least I still have you by my side," she whispered.
"Then what about me?" My father's voice asked through the pack's mind-link.
I pulled back and turned to see if he was behind us.
"You know I have amazing hearing, as you do?" he asked when he came out of his office and walked to where we were.
"Of course I know," I answered.
He stood a bit further from us and spread his arms.
My mother quickly moved into his embrace and wrapped her arms around waist.
"You have me by your side, never forget that. Whenever you feel lonely or sad, I'll be right by your side," he said in an assuring tone.
He really knew how to treat her right and make her feel better.
"I know, it's just that missing a pup is different from...,"
"Lui is still here, honey," he answered.
"He is right, and soon enough Akira will join us in the pack house when I become acting Alpha," I said with a smile.
"Just imagine having our pups running around and calling you mother grandma and father grandpa. I'm sure you would both love that," I said with a smile, then shrugged.
"What?" I asked when my father looked at me seriously.
"Stop thinking about pups and go train with your Beta," he answered seriously.
"Fine, I was just trying to cheer her up," I said in a whiny tone.
He smiled and then nodded.
I nodded back and then turned and walked away.
I knew he was telling me how he got it and how I shouldn't worry by the nod. That's why I had to assure him I knew that by nodding back.
Truth be told, I wanted to have a love of my own with Akira, but besides that, I wanted us to stay strong and be a pillar for each other, just like my parents and her parents were.
That way, we would lead the pack in a peaceful and prosperous way.
