August's POV
"So?" I asked Kyle on the phone.
"I called Garren yesterday, and he said Mariana is doing okay, although she looked very afraid and conflicted when she met the other members of his territory," he answered.
"And the Alpha king's mate?" I asked.
"She decided to stay in Lui's pack because she felt free and safe there," he replied.
"I'm sorry, Uncle August, but why did you leave like that without a word? You missed out on a lot," he asked.
I slowly turned in my seat behind my desk and looked at Tanya, who was sleeping on the bed. I could still see a light shade of red under her lashes.
I had never seen her cry so much before. She refused to eat most of the time or talk to me as much as she used to.
I was trying my very best to comfort her, yet it did nothing; I was running out of options.
"Something bad happened, and I didn't want to inform anyone. We had to leave immediately because it involved my mate, and she asked that of me," I answered and then stood up from my seat.
"I truly am so sorry. I'll call Ian and talk to him as well," I said seriously.
"It's okay; I will talk to him on your behalf, Uncle," he answered as I smiled.
"You really are a kind pup, Kyle," I said seriously, then frowned when I heard the doorbell ring.
"I have to hang up; there is someone at the door," I said and then quickly disconnected the call before he could respond.
I glanced at Tanya before walking out. As I walked to the door, I picked up Teresa's scent.
I stood still, not wanting to open the door.
"I know you are in there, Tanya; just talk to me!" she screamed loudly, and I found myself rushing to open the door.
"Shut it," I warned.
"August, I want to talk to my daughter," she said seriously.
"I don't think it's the right time for you to do that," I answered seriously.
"You are not her mother; now step aside and let me through!" she screamed as I clenched my hands into fists and held in a growl.
"Ried, no," I said silently when I felt him try to take over.
"I can't do that, Teresa. I may not be your daughter, but I am her mate and fiancé," I answered, then frowned when I picked up Tanya's scent.
"As you said, you are her fiancé, not her husband. Now get the hell out of my ..."
"Enough, Teresa!" Tanya's voice came from behind.
"Honey," Teresa whispered.
"Let her in," she said.
I glanced behind and looked at her before stepping aside.
Although she had rested for a few hours, she still looked pale and very exhausted. Her hair was a mess, and she had sweat forming on her forehead.
I quickly rushed to her side and held her hand.
"You should take a seat," I whispered in concern.
"No, I'm okay," she whispered back and then forced a smile on her face.
I looked at Teresa, then let go of Tanya's hand and took a few steps back.
I didn't want to get in the way of what she was about to say to her mother.
"What do you want, Teresa?" she asked in a low tone.
"Honey," Teresa whispered and moved closer to touch her.
"Don't fucking touch me, Teresa!" she screamed at the top of her voice, startling me.
"Talk and get out while I'm still being nice," she said.
Teresa dropped her hands and then looked sadly at me as if asking for my help.
I rolled my eyes and shifted my gaze to my mate.
"Honey," she called.
"Tanya is the name. Now, why are you here?" Tanya asked coldly.
"I came to see you and explain to you what really happened," she answered.
"You don't have to tell me anything; Dad already did. But I want you to answer these few questions of mine truthfully," Tanya said as Teresa quickly nodded.
"Okay," she answered.
"Were you raped by my biological father?" she asked.
"Um..."
"Were you, Teresa?" she asked.
"No," Teresa answered in a whisper.
"Were you wasted when fucking him?" Tanya asked in a cracked voice as tears filled her eyes.
"No," Teresa answered in a low tone.
"Were you in love with him even when you were married to Dad?" she asked.
"Look, your father was distant, and I felt lonely. There was...."
"Teresa, answer the damn question, please!" she screamed, with tears running down her cheeks.
I desperately wanted to pull her into my arms and take her away from the room and her mother. But I also wanted her to fully face her for her to truly heal.
"I was in love with him, okay! He was the one I loved and wanted, but there was never a day he looked at me or wanted me!" Teresa answered loudly.
"The one who noticed me was your father, who, well... isn't your biological father," she said in a cracked voice.
"I dated your father hoping his brother would somehow get jealous or notice me, yet still, it never worked. I went as far as even marrying your dad, yet he still treated me like his damn sister!" she yelled as I looked at her in disbelief.
"The only damn time he wanted me was when he got drunk at a party we both attended. Having him look at me like a woman made me so happy that I didn't think much about it when he kissed me," she said, then sniffed.
"After having sex with him, that's when the guilt kicked in. We both had partners, and we knew that telling them would only ruin our lives; that's why we kept quiet," she said as I widened my mouth in shock.
"It was only when I found out about you in my womb that I confronted him. I was expecting we would be a family, but he wanted nothing to do with me or you. He said it was all a mistake, and soon your father found out," she said as tears filled her eyes.
"I never meant to hurt him; I just wanted..."
Tanya jumped on her, bringing her down and punching her face furiously.
I quickly ran to her, grabbing her waist and pulling her back.
"Fuck you, Teresa! Go die!" she screamed while pointing a finger at her.
Teresa was on the floor, sobbing with a bleeding nose.
"You just die because, as of today, you are dead to me. I'll never, ever forgive you or talk to you again, you stupid bitch," Tanya yelled, turning and burying her face in my chest, sobbing.
I quickly embraced her and looked at Teresa, then at the door.
She slowly got to her feet and turned, walking slowly to the door.
When she grabbed the handle, she turned back and looked at us.
"I..."
"Teresa, get the fuck out. You do not want to see me upset, do you?" I asked seriously.
She turned back, then pulled open the door and walked out.
I was sad about my mate's pain but also happy that she talked to her and got the truth she wanted. Now she could cut her off without any guilt and move on, knowing it wasn't her fault but Teresa's.
"So?" I asked Kyle on the phone.
