Mariana's POV
I sat looking at Roxanne's little pup as I clenched my hands into fists.
He was so innocent, yet I knew he would grow up to be the very thing I despised the most because of the blood flowing through his veins.
His mother was an Alpha Queen, while his father was a very powerful hybrid. The chances of him becoming any of his father's breed were high, but his chances of becoming an Alpha King were even higher.
Would killing him in secret be a bad thing?
I quickly averted my eyes when the pup smiled at me.
He sat playing with a sword toy, and a powerful witch stood close to the door's entrance, watching his every movement.
"Excuse me, Miss Alpha Queen. Why do you look at the young master like that?" she asked seriously.
Damn it, was it so obvious that I was thinking badly of him?
I didn't want anyone to know or find out what my exact thoughts were, at least not now.
If I was going to kill the little pup, I had to do it discreetly.
"You must not have heard the news from Roxanne yet, but I was pregnant before. Sadly, it didn't end well for my unborn pup because I ended up losing it," I answered as tears filled my eyes.
"Looking at Roxanne's pup makes me wonder what my own pup would have looked like and if it would have been a girl or a boy," I lied, with tears rolling down my cheeks.
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry to hear that," she said softly.
I wiped my tears and then smiled.
"It's okay; it was a long time ago, though the wounds of the heart still hurt," I answered and then looked at the door when I picked up Roxanne's scent.
She walked in with a smile and quickly went to lift up the pup, kissing his forehead lightly.
"Who is my good, awesome warrior?" she asked playfully.
"I am," the pup answered and then giggled, annoying me.
"Did you do well with your training?" she asked as the pup nodded.
"Training?" I asked with a raised brow.
What exactly did she imply by that when the pup was so young?
"Oh well, Garren insisted on training him," she answered as I frowned and held in a growl that was coming from my wolf.
"I'm sorry, but I do not understand," I said seriously.
"Oh no, it's not that kind of training that you are thinking about," she said with a smile as she moved closer.
"My pup always takes joy in watching his father train every time he goes to the training field, and there was one time we found him playing with a few weapons," she said as I looked at her coldly.
She was one careless mother to let a small pup touch dangerous weapons.
"What kind of weapons were they?" I asked coldly.
"Oh, just a bow and some arrows," she answered and then cleared her throat.
"Mariana, are you okay?" she asked seriously.
"Of course I am; I was just concerned for a second when I heard that," I answered and then smiled.
"So, as I was saying, after that incident, Garren decided to get a few toys for him, like a sword, bow, and arrow that are harmless," she said while she put the boy on the floor.
"And since then, both Garren and our pup usually spend their time bonding in training," she said as I stood up.
"Besides that so-called bonding, how else do they spend their time together?" I asked seriously.
"Well, they spend time together like most fathers and pups do. You know, taking walks together, eating together, and so on," she answered as I slowly sat down again.
"I'm sorry to ask this again, Mariana, but are you okay?" she asked seriously.
"Of course I am. It's just that ever since I came here, I have been thinking about a few things," I answered simply.
"As I was telling Jersey a few minutes ago, whenever I look at your pup, I kind of remember my painful past and the pup I lost," I lied.
Her expression changed instantly to sadness. She moved closer and grabbed my hands.
"I can't lie and tell you that I understand how you felt going through such hell, but I can assure you that I know how anyone in their right mind would go through so much pain losing their pup," she said.
"Like, I love my pup with everything I have, and I can never imagine losing him and being sane. I would lose my mind or even go rogue," she said, and then smiled.
"That's why I admire your strength, Mariana, because you are truly a strong and worthy Alpha queen that most she-wolves will look up to," she said, and then let go of my hands.
"If you want to talk about your past or feel sad and burdened, just know that Jersey and I will be around to cheer you up," she said as I faked a smile.
"Thank you, Roxanne. You giving me a place to stay is more than what I needed. So, thank you very much for taking me in and making me a part of your pack," I answered.
"Also, you are more than welcome to carry and talk to my pup. I heard from my father's pack members how being close to a pup when you are pregnant or have lost one helps to heal or make one happy," she said as my smile grew wider.
If only she knew how I was dying to strangle the damn pup. In my mind, I was planning ways to kill him because I hated what he was and what he would become.
I would rather he died, even if it meant that I lost my very own life in the process.
She moved and grabbed her pup, then took a few steps forward, moving closer to me.
"Hey sweetheart, don't you want to be in Mariana's arms?" she asked the pup.
"Yes, I want to," he responded as I swallowed a growl.
"Do you want to hold him too?" she asked.
"No!" came my wolf's warning.
"If we don't, we will raise suspicion," I told her silently while I raised my hands.
"Sure, it would be my pleasure to hold him," I answered.
Immediately, the pup moved into my arms; tears filled my eyes.
The tears I had were not of joy but of pure rage because even before I could touch the damn pup, I knew when I entered the mansion and looked at him.
The pup was my second chance mate who could end up being an Alpha king.
I very much wanted him dead!
