No one at the company had been able to focus on work these past few days. All anyone talked about was Oliver.
Two girls from the marketing department were gossiping in the restroom, and I happened to overhear them. That was how I finally found out who Jennifer really was.
It turned out that Jennifer was a distant relative of Xander's. She used to work as a maid at Xander's house but somehow she and Oliver slept together. When she got pregnant, Xander forced Oliver to marry her.
Oliver wanted to get in Xander's good graces, so he actually did want to marry Jennifer. But Oliver was worried that divorcing me would mean splitting the assets, so he kept stalling.
After the two girls left, I stepped out of the restroom. I turned on the faucet and stuck my head under the icy water, but it still couldn't put out the rage burning inside me.
I'd never understood why Oliver never mentioned getting a divorce even though he had fallen for someone else. I'd gone over so many possibilities, but I never expected the reason to be so blunt and disgusting—Oliver didn't want to give up half his money.
The bank accounts were all under his and his mother's names. The small apartment they rented out was bought before the marriage and had nothing to do with me.
The only thing he didn't want to split was the big house I paid for with my own assets. I couldn't believe their greed could go that far.
I went back to the office with a cold face, only to see new updates online.
Someone had posted that over three months ago, in the middle of the night, a witness saw Oliver and Amelia struggling to lift a large bag into the trunk of a car.
That post gave me a surge of hope—I didn't think anyone had seen anything before I was dumped into the ocean.
I immediately told the troll team to boost that post as much as possible. Then I picked up the phone and called my family. My mom answered the call and asked, "Hello, who's this?"
I hesitated for a long time. My mom was about to hang up when I finally made up my mind.
I spoke in my original voice, "Someone in Oliver's neighborhood saw him and his mother, late at night over three months ago, sneaking a large bag into the trunk of a car.
"This probably has something to do with your daughter, but I still hope you won't worry too much about her."
My mom said on the other end of the line, "Take care of yourself. I know what to do." Her voice sounded a little choked.
"You take care too," I replied and then hung up the call, tears streaming uncontrollably down my face.
I believed my dear mother understood what I was trying to say on the phone. I had been such a terrible daughter to her, always making her worry about me.
I swore that once I got my identity back, I would take good care of her and never let her carry this burden again.
My mom moved fast. By the afternoon, I saw a post saying the police had brought in sniffer dogs to Oliver's house to collect evidence.
Soon, Amelia was also taken away by the police. Within a few days, it was reported that Oliver and Amelia had been formally arrested.
I didn't know what methods the police used, but either way, Oliver and Amelia confessed everything that had happened that night. Then a large search team was dispatched to retrieve my "body" from the sea.
Of course they wouldn't find anything. First of all, I was alive and well. And even if I really had died, it had already been over three months. Any trace of me would've been long gone, picked clean by the fish.
News of Oliver and Amelia's confession triggered another round of heated discussion online. People took to the internet to condemn Oliver for his cruelty and demanded the harshest sentence.
Oliver's crimes included murder and embezzlement, with the embezzlement amount being substantial. He would probably spend the rest of his life in prison.
Oliver and Amelia ended up in prison, but Jennifer got away because of her pregnancy.
Although Jennifer didn't end up in jail, life wasn't easy for her. People pointed fingers at her even when she went out to buy groceries. Word was that things were really tough for her.
Xander's attitude changed drastically. The same man who used to praise Oliver in front of me now acted like he barely even knew Oliver.
The other employees followed his lead. Those who used to be close with Oliver scrambled to distance themselves. Some even came to my office to report him, handing over evidence of his embezzlement. It was a classic case of everyone turning on a sinking ship.
But no matter what, if Oliver really spent the rest of his life in prison, I'd consider my revenge complete.
Just when I thought everything was finally over, I heard something that completely stunned me—Oliver had escaped.
The news came straight from the police when they showed up at the company with a wanted notice. They said Oliver faked a stomachache. While being taken to the hospital, he slipped away through a bathroom window by climbing down a drainpipe.
Oliver escaped wearing his detention center uniform and didn't have a single cent on him.
The police believed he'd definitely reach out to someone he knew for money, so they came to the company to warn everyone—if anyone heard from Oliver, they needed to report it immediately.
Something this big had to be reported to Xander, and I just so happened to need to confirm a document with him anyway. So I went to his office to tell him about Oliver's escape in person.
Xander's office was on the top floor. As soon as I stepped out of the elevator, I heard voices coming from inside. The moment I heard that voice, I froze. I never would've imagined I'd hear her.
