Happy times always passed too quickly. Delilah and I got along wonderfully, and her cheerful mood sped up her recovery. One evening, I sneaked into her ward, only to find the nurse packing her belongings.
Seeing me, Delilah beamed and waved, "Kate, come here."
I no longer needed a wheelchair, so I hobbled over on crutches. "Delilah, are you being discharged?"
Delilah chuckled, "Yeah, dear. I'm all better now. I'll be leaving tomorrow"
Though a little sad, I smiled brightly and said, "Congratulations on your recovery. I hope you stay healthy and live a long, happy life."
Delilah pulled me into a warm hug, her smile as tender as sunlight. "Sweet girl."
"You have to stay well," I murmured.
Every moment with her reminded me of my grandma—her same gentle kindness. But when my grandma passed, I never got to say goodbye.
Jonathan had called the Cooke family, and Amelia promised to relay the message immediately. Yet she waited hours before telling me. By the time I reached the hospital, my grandma was already gone.
It was a regret I could never undo, and Jonathan hadn't spoken to me since.
With Delilah, I felt that same closeness. So I treated her like my own grandma, and she, in turn, cherished me more than Joey.
Delilah patted the back of my hand. "Kate, come back at eight tomorrow morning. I have an announcement to make."
"Okay." I nodded without asking questions. I would find out soon enough anyway.
After chatting a while longer, Delilah claimed fatigue and gently shooed me off to rest.
Back in my ward, I washed up quickly and crawled into bed. Before dawn, I sensed a presence nearby. My eyes flew open, and I saw someone sitting beside my bed.
I never kept overnight nurses. Heart hammering, I nearly screamed before a figure spoke, "When will you outgrow this carelessness? Alone in a hospital room, and you don't even lock the door."
Mason's voice cut through the dark. Then, he flicked the lights on.
The sudden light made me squint. He looked furious.
"Why are you here?" I deflected.
Mason sighed, "Making sure you hadn't wandered off."
I offered a placating smile. "See? I'm still here. I'll be more careful. Don't be mad?"
Ignoring me, Mason slumped onto the sofa, draped his coat over himself, and closed his eyes.
The clock read 4:30 a.m. He had woken me just to sleep himself! It was unfair.
I asked, "Mason, what's with this dawn raid?"
"Surprise delivery," he mumbled, already half-asleep. "Delilah had me fly your parents back for the engagement. I just dropped them at the hotel."
I froze. A surprise? No. It was more like a shock with zero delight.
Mason yawned. "Save it for sunrise. I'm crashing." Within seconds, snores rumbled from the sofa.
Sleep abandoned me. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Suddenly, Delilah's uncharacteristic early dismissal made sense. She had planned this reunion.
The thought of facing "my parents" tomorrow clawed at my nerves, but escape wasn't an option.
I nearly shook Mason awake to grill him for survival tips. Yet the shadows under his eyes stayed my hand.
My mind raced with worries, imagining all sorts of possible scenarios. One misstep, and "my parents" would see through me.
Gradually, I started feeling resentful toward Mason. He actually followed Delilah's orders and invited "my parents" here. I glared at his sleeping form—once, twice—as if lasers could scorch through him.
Dawn finally crept in. Mason woke up, stretching like a contented lion before noting my stiff posture. "Nervous?"
"Not at all." I deadpanned.
"Amnesia covers all mistakes," he said before heading to the bathroom to wash up.
I smacked my forehead. "Right! I'm amnesic."
By eight, Mason helped me into Delilah's ward. The room brimmed with faces—Martin, Helen, Richard, Joey, and even Aria Knight, Mason's usually elusive sister. There were four strangers—two elderly, two middle-aged.
Ignoring Joey's venomous stare, I headed to Delilah. "Good morning."
"Kate, look who's here!" Delilah clasped my hand, steering me toward the newcomers.
"Let me introduce everyone," Mason said. "Your mother, father, brother, and your brother's wife."
The four people rose in unison. The elder woman, Bridget Gordon, swiped at glistening eyes. "Kate, my daughter. I'm your mother."
Bridget reached out to touch my face, but I instinctively turned away. "I'm sorry, I don't remember you," I said with polite detachment, my expression carefully blank.
"I'm sorry, Kate. I forgot your amnesia. Forgive me, Kate. You've been through so much," Bridget said, her voice breaking as tears rolled down her cheeks. The raw grief in the room thickened like fog, pressing down on everyone.
"Let's not mar this happy occasion with tears," Elsie Gordon, the wife of Katherine's brother, soothed, rubbing Bridget's back.
Sniffling, Bridget wiped her eyes. "You're right. I'm just... overwhelmed."
Delilah clapped her hands, her smile slicing through the tension. "Now that we're all here, I have an announcement."
Every eye locked onto her as she continued, "My grandson, Mason Knight, and Katherine Gordon are getting engaged today."
A flicker of shock darted across Helen's face before she quickly regained her composure.
My gaze slid to Joey. Though her face was a thundercloud, at least she didn't object outright. Apparently, after being locked away for some time, she got some restraint.
Upon hearing the news, everyone in the room clapped. Even those who might have had objections did their best to look pleased.
A month ago, Delilah had told me that my engagement to Mason would take place in three months. But this morning, Mason told me that today was our engagement day. It all felt too sudden.
Besides, shouldn't there have been invitations sent out in advance, a venue prepared... The sudden announcement left me quite puzzled.
Mason whispered in my ear, "Delilah wanted to make the announcement unexpectedly, in case anything went wrong."
I understood then. Delilah had done it to prevent Helen from interfering. But if Helen had already set her mind on causing trouble, she would always find a way. A sense of worry crept into my heart as I thought about what lay ahead for me.
