Mason leaned in, his warm breath against my ear. "Your turn."
I nodded, knowing it was finally my moment to show.
But before I could speak, Theodore strode forward and pulled the woman into an embrace. He said, "I'm sorry, Arlene. It's my fault." Then, he whispered something in her ear before guiding her out.
The reporters, hungry for scandal, swarmed them. They asked, "Sir, what's your relationship with this woman?"
"Did you threaten her?"
"Miss, are you—"
"I... I made a mistake. I'm his girlfriend," the woman stammered, letting Theodore lead her away. The reporters stood frozen, watching the abrupt exit.
The drama had ended too soon, like a firework fizzling out before the grand finale.
The wedding had to go on. Hunter, ever the professional, smoothly shifted gears. After lightening the mood, he turned to me. "Ms. Gordon, do you take Mr. Knight to be your husband?"
I smiled, "Yes, I do."
Applause erupted. The ceremony concluded without further disruptions. Joey and Elena accompanied me to the dressing room to change into my reception outfit. The banquet would start soon.
Sinking into a chair, I exhaled deeply. The exhaustion hit me all at once. Only halfway through the wedding, and already so much had happened. It hadn't exactly been life-threatening, but every time, disaster had come close to ruining everything.
What came next was still unknown. I felt nervous, but I had to face it head-on. I had chosen this path, and there was no turning back. I had decided to marry Mason, and I knew my future life with him wouldn't be peaceful.
I closed my eyes, massaging my temples. I needed to pull myself together.
"Hey, wake up. Don't sleep." Joey nudged me sharply.
I opened my eyes to find her standing before me, holding a small mirror.
"What?" I had assumed she was hurrying me to change, but her expression said otherwise.
Her youthful face was comically stern. "Look at yourself. Pathetic."
My earlier melancholy dissolved into amusement. I played along. "How am I pathetic?"
Joey scoffed, "You're seriously asking? That woman crashed your wedding, and you just let her rant? You should've slapped her."
I perked up, eager to tease her further. "Why would I? She mistook Mason for someone else."
"Are you dumb? She came to ruin things! You really bought that 'Theo's girlfriend' crap?"
Even Joey saw through the act. Of course, I had too. Seizing the chance, I probed. "Wait. She's not Theodore's girlfriend? So, she is Mason's old fling?"
Joey blurted out, "No. It's—"
A knock interrupted. Joey clamped her mouth shut, realizing she had said too much. With a huff, she stalked off.
Elena opened the door. Helen entered, all smiles. "Katherine, why aren't you changed? Hurry up."
"Right away." I nodded.
Helen's gaze shifted to Joey. "Come with me."
Joey followed Helen out, returning later visibly sulking.
By then, I had changed. Elena held a tray of candies and favors, walking behind me as we prepared to head out.
Joey lunged for it. "Give it to me," she demanded.
Elena sidestepped, glancing at me for direction.
After this morning's betrayal, distance had grown between us. I gestured for Elena to hand the tray over to Joey and take the other one.
Joey pouted, trying to make another grab for it.
My voice turned icy. "You can't carry both."
Grudgingly, Joey backed down.
The banquet was in full swing when we entered. Mason and I began making rounds, toasting each guest.
At first, everything went smoothly, but I stayed alert. Joey seemed distracted, and I worried Helen had planted some scheme in her mind.
Our first toast was, of course, to Delilah. She smiled warmly, downed her glass in one go, and patted our hands, "Hope you live in harmony. Kate, you should give Mason a child soon."
"Yes, of course," I replied, feigning shyness, which drew laughter from the crowd.
Next was Martin, who handed me a gift with little fanfare.
Just as we reached Helen, the lights in the venue cut out entirely.
"Mase, send someone to check this," Delilah snapped, her voice sharp with irritation.
"Yes," Mason said, signaling for assistance.
Helen interjected, "Mason's the groom. Let Richard handle it."
"Silence. You don't speak here," Delilah said, her tone icy despite its quiet volume.
The guests, accustomed to high-society hiccups, remained composed even as the air conditioning and ventilation stalled.
Within minutes, the lights flickered back on.
Whether deliberate or not, Delilah then directed us to toast Edward and Grace next, skipping Helen entirely.
I caught Helen's stiff, humiliated expression and couldn't help but smirk.
As Mason and I moved toward Edward, a loud clatter sounded. A tray hit the floor. Then, Elena's voice rang out. "Joey, why did you push me?"
