Mason pulled me to hide around the stairwell corner. It was the perfect blind spot. We could see everything below clearly, but no one down there could spot us.
"Richie, I'm a little scared." Elena clutched her handbag tightly, looking really nervous.
"Then forget it. I'll find someone else. No need to push yourself," Richard said. Their voices were quiet, but in the still of the night, we could hear every word.
"Will you still love me then?" Elena asked.
"Of course, baby. Don't overthink it," Richard said. They hugged tightly, staying like that for a while before pulling apart.
After they split, Elena seemed to steel herself. "No need to find someone else. I'll do it."
"You're the best, baby. I love you," Richard said.
"I love you too," Elena said.
Richard walked Elena out. We exchanged a look and hurried back to our room.
I shut the door, poured a glass of water from the pitcher, and chugged it down. That finally settled my nerves a bit.
The discovery had sobered me right up. I asked Mason, "When did Elena and Richard hook up?"
He glanced at me. "Why not ask them? They probably haven't gone far. You could still catch up."
I was speechless.
Mason could never just talk nicely. But then again, my question was pretty dumb.
Mason sat on the couch with a frown. After a minute, he said, "Be careful these next few days. Elena will come to see you."
"Huh? How do you know?" I asked.
"Richard never gets his own hands dirty when he does something bad. Did you see how Elena's hands shook when she held that bag? There's definitely something shady in there."
"I-I won't see her." A chill ran through me. I was scared.
"If she's set on hurting you, avoiding her won't fix it." He paused. "Don't worry. I'll protect you."
Oh, those words took most of my fear away right away. I didn't ask how he planned to protect me. I just felt an inexplicable sense of safety.
Looks like Helen and Richard were in a hurry. They couldn't wait to make a move on me. But the inheritance mess was over, right? Why were they still trying to get me?
I voiced the question in my mind. Mason said it was probably the comment I made that afternoon that put Helen and Richard on edge, making them want to get rid of me.
But I still didn't get it. I asked Mason, "If they're plotting to hurt me, why do it here at home instead of somewhere else?" It'd be way easier to stay hidden outside.
"Did you see Elena's face when she came out? All flushed. Obviously they'd just had sex. Richard's a total clean freak about that stuff. He won't stay in hotels or sleep with a woman who's been with someone else."
Oh, that made sense.
After all that, we didn't get to bed till two in the morning. Then bright and early, Mason was shaking me awake. "Get up. We're going to check on Grandma."
"What? We have to go check on her in the morning?" I rolled over and kept sleeping. Last night had been way too draining. I needed all the sleep I could get to recharge my fried brain.
"It's our family rule," he replied.
I shot straight up in bed, wide awake. I rushed to get up, wash up, put on makeup, and get ready to head downstairs.
Most of the Knight family rules were set by Harold. Even though he'd been gone a long time, his influence still stuck. As Mason's new wife, showing up late to check on Delilah the first time would look like I was against the rules.
No one messed with the Knight family rules. And Helen and Richard were already watching me like hawks.
If I was late, in Joey's words, I'd be toast.
Once I was ready, Mason and I went to the living room, but Delilah wasn't there.
"Grandma's probably in the backyard. Let's go," Mason said.
"Okay," I said.
We went out the back door to the yard, and sure enough, Delilah was watering a row of plants.
It was my first time in the backyard. The small yard was all neat and organized, split into little sections with at least a dozen different plants growing in them.
The plants Delilah was watering were pothos. Next to them were cacti, ivy and spider plants.
Behind her was a fancy greenhouse shaped like a castle. Its frame was all titanium alloy. It was strong but super expensive.
The walls and roof of the greenhouse were glass, polished so clearly that they sparkled. Through the glass, you could see it was full of colorful geraniums, petunias, lavender and more.
Such a lush, lively sight.
It made me feel good just looking at it. I ran over. "Morning, Delilah. Let me help."
Delilah said, "Oh, Kate, you're up so early? Why not sleep more? Young folks need their rest. No need to get up this early."
Nice as that sounded, I couldn't take it seriously. I smiled and said nothing, turning around to find something to do but not knowing where to start.
"Morning, Grandma," Mason said as he came over, smoothly taking the watering can from Delilah to water another small patch.
Delilah said, "Oh, stop that. I just watered that spot. You two don't need to bother. You'll only mess things up."
I let out a laugh. With how serious he looked, I thought he did this all the time. Turns out he was faking it. Though he did a pretty good job of it.
Delilah said, "Come on, let's head back. They should be coming down soon."
We got back to the living room and sure enough, Martin, Helen, Richard, and Joey were all there.
We said good morning in order of age. Joey pointedly skipped me, clearly still mad.
Delilah's face clouded over, about to scold her when Helen pinched Joey and said, "You silly girl, always so careless. Did you say good morning to Kate?"
Joey started to argue but saw Delilah looking unhappy. She reluctantly said to me, "Morning, Kate."
"Morning, Joey," I said.
I didn't ask her what time she got back last night, where she'd been, or how she returned. I just let yesterday's stuff go, pretended it never happened, and let it stay in the past.
I already have two tough enemies in the Knight family, and Joey was different from them. Even if I couldn't be friends with her, there was no need for me to make her an enemy.
We all went to the dining room for breakfast. Regular meals weren't like family dinners. They stuck to the "no talking at the table" rule. There were plenty of people, but not a sound was made.
After breakfast, I wanted to head back to my room to catch up on sleep.
It was the third day of our marriage, and I thought about going back to Gordon Villa.
But the Gordon family was all abroad, and none of them came to my wedding. Seems like there was no point in going.
I did want to go to Lane Villa to see my real parents. Ever since Richard almost found out what was going on last time, Mason had sent the whole Lane family away. I hadn't seen them since then.
But Mason never told me where he sent them. I asked twice, but he wouldn't say.
Of course, even if I knew where they lived, I wouldn't dare go over. I'd have to wait until everything was out in the open before I could go back for real.
So I had nothing to do today. I figured it'd be super laid-back.
I was just about to go upstairs to my room when Delilah called me. "Kate, wait. I need to talk to you." Helen was asked to stay too.
