I scurried over to Mason, sweet and docile. "You're back. You must be tired," I said, taking his briefcase. "Are you thirsty? I'll make some coffee."
"Can't you keep a low profile? Calm down," Mason said.
Even though he said that, he wasn't really angry. There was even a smile on his usually icy face.
"You heard about what happened today, right? Right?" I grabbed his arm, shaking it excitedly—back to my normal self.
"Go make the coffee. I'm thirsty," Mason said.
"Got it."
He took off his coat and hung it up, then told me, "I just came from Grandma's study."
"Oh? What did Delilah say?" I perked up. My gossipy side went into overdrive, and I couldn't hold back my excitement.
Mason gave me a glare and then told me the whole story. That was when I found out what happened after they got home that day.
Helen and Martin had come back first. When Helen fainted, Martin wanted to call a doctor to the house to check on her. After all, the family owned hospitals. It would be easy.
But halfway there, Helen suddenly felt nauseous like she was going to throw up. She couldn't hold it in. They quickly stopped the car, so she could get out and vomit. She retched for ages but didn't throw up anything.
Martin patted her gently on the back from behind. He urged her to go to the hospital for a check-up. After all, the hospital had better equipment.
Just then, an old man with a beard appeared out of nowhere. He looked wise and sharp, not like a bad guy.
The old man glanced at them and then congratulated Helen and Martin. He said Helen was pregnant, congratulating them on having a child in their later years.
He even said it wasn't just a boy. It was a boy with a fate of great wealth and honor. Someday, that child would definitely make something of himself.
Helen married Martin when she was 20. She'd given birth to Richard just two months after the wedding. She was only 42 now. She wasn't that old. It was totally possible for her to get pregnant.
Martin had been half-convinced at first. But Helen secretly told him that she really hadn't gotten her period the month before. That made him fully believe the old man's words. Overjoyed, he took all the cash from his wallet and gave it to the old man as a reward.
The old man left happily, and Helen and Martin returned in high spirits too.
When Helen and Martin got back, Delilah and the others had just arrived home. So Helen and Martin announced the news of the pregnancy right away.
Delilah saw that Helen and Martin had come back later than her. She assumed they'd gone to the hospital for a check-up and were announcing the result.
She never would've guessed that this so-called pregnancy was just some random nonsense from an old man on the street.
But when Helen fainted today and the doctor said she wasn't pregnant, it reminded Delilah of asking where Helen had had the check-up that day.
That was when Martin told Delilah exactly what had happened.
Delilah never imagined the whole thing would be so absurd. She was so angry that she almost passed out.
She swept everything off the table onto the floor. But even that didn't ease her rage. She pointed at Martin and yelled at him for half an hour before letting him go.
But that wasn't all. Still fuming, Delilah told Helen and Martin to move out of Knight Manor. She didn't want to see them and get angry.
By the time Mason finished telling the whole story, my mouth was hanging open in shock.
I knew Martin was unreliable, but I never thought he could be this unreliable. No wonder Delilah never let go of control. If she handed the chairman's position over to Martin, the Knight family wouldn't be far from ruin.
"Do you think they'll move out?" I asked, curious.
"Not sure. But you need to be extra careful these days. Elena didn't get what she wanted this time. Given Richard's personality, he won't give up easily," Mason said.
"Can I ask Joey for help again next time?" I asked, though I figured it was unlikely.
Sure enough, Mason shook his head. "Using her even once has caused a huge stir. They won't let you get the chance to use Joey again. Be careful these next few days. Joey might turn on you too."
I nodded in agreement, feeling a little uneasy.
Oh, right, something suddenly occurred to me. "Today, when I was buying her gifts, I maxed out all my cards. You have to reimburse me, okay?"
"Well." Mason nodded seriously and then pulled me into a hug.
I was stunned.
It wasn't until he started walking toward the bedroom that I snapped out of it. I followed behind, muttering nonstop, "I need cash, not a hug. That's all my savings. How can you... How can you do this to me..."
Mason suddenly turned around. He pulled a card out of his pocket like a magician. "There's 1.5 million dollars here. Is that enough?"
"Enough, more than enough." I beamed and reached for the card. But instead of getting the card, I stumbled into a warm embrace.
Feeling the shift in his body, I quickly tried to push Mason away. "No, it's not the right time."
"Stay still. Let me hold you for a minute."
I stopped moving. Nestling into his broad chest felt so secure. Even though there were troubles ahead, with Mason here, I wasn't afraid of anything.
Early the next morning, I went to the living room as usual to check on Delilah. But we were late. We were the last to arrive.
Helen's eyes were red and puffy. She'd changed into regular clothes. After that huge fiasco, she looked embarrassed and spoke awkwardly to everyone.
Delilah had worn a scowl since we came down. She even acted colder than usual toward me. I got why she felt that way. I wouldn't take it personally.
After breakfast, Richard announced something in front of everyone. He was bringing his girlfriend home.
My first thought was Elena. But these days I'd grown steadier. Even though that was what I thought, I didn't let it show on my face.
This was definitely good news for Delilah, and for Martin and Helen too.
The heavy, gloomy mood lifted in an instant. The air turned lively. Delilah, Martin, and Helen all asked who the girl was, how old she was.
Richard just smiled and said nothing. He only promised that Delilah would be pleased.
With that, Delilah stopped pressing. She said there was no better day than today. She told him to bring her over for dinner, so everyone could meet her.
He agreed right away. He said he'd do whatever Delilah wanted.
Richard was bringing his girlfriend home, so the topic of Martin and Helen moving out had to be put on hold for now.
Delilah glanced at everyone and said meaningfully, "If Richie's girlfriend is a good girl, they should set a wedding date soon. Get married early, so I can have a great-grandchild. Then if each has one child, I'll get to hold two babies at once."
Helen's face kept flushing and paling. She was so embarrassed that she didn't know where to put her hands or feet.
Luckily, everyone had to go to work soon. Before leaving, Delilah told me, "Kate, you'll handle tonight's dinner."
I quickly tried to back out. "Delilah, I can't. I might manage on a normal day, but today Richie's girlfriend is coming. If I mess it up, I'll bring shame on the family."
Delilah's face hardened. "Who are you trying to shirk your responsibility to? You can do it. And if you can't, you'll have to anyway."
"Yes, Delilah. I'll do as you say," I replied.
