Delilah's expression softened a bit when I agreed.
Everyone leaving for work said they'd be back early that afternoon and told me to just do my best and not worry.
Helen had really crossed Delilah this time. Having me handle the meal for Richard's girlfriend's first visit was such an obvious slight. It left Helen completely humiliated.
Helen stayed until everyone left, then turned around, and went back to her room. She didn't come out all morning.
I didn't have time to think about how she felt. I spent almost the whole day busy with the house decorations and dinner preparations.
No matter who Richard brought home, as Mason's wife, I had to do what I was supposed to do.
Delilah and Martin came back early. Richard went to pick up his girlfriend. Mason said he was too busy with work to return.
Joey hadn't been home all day. Her phone was off, and no one knew where she'd gone.
The doorbell rang. A maid hurried to answer it. Richard had brought back a very pretty girl.
She was around 20, petite with a round, cute little face.
With her standing next to Richard, they made a lovely couple. He was handsome, while she was beautiful. When she smiled, there were two small dimples at the corners of her mouth. A real beauty.
Richard first introduced his girlfriend to everyone in the family. Then he announced, "This is my girlfriend, Moira Duke."
Delilah thought the girl looked familiar. She asked, "Moira, have we met somewhere before?"
"Mrs. Delilah Knight, don't you remember? Last year, my mom and I attended your birthday party. You said I was smart and pretty. You gave me this." Moira pulled a necklace out from under her collar. There was a sapphire pendant on it.
Delilah suddenly remembered. "Yes. I remember now. You're Mr. Duke's daughter."
Richard had really done well. His girlfriend was not only beautiful but also from a decent family.
Not just Martin and Helen were overjoyed. Even Delilah's attitude toward the girl had a hint of deference.
"Delilah, which Mr. Duke?" Helen asked eagerly, right in front of Moira.
Delilah ignored her. She took Moira's hand and kept chatting.
Martin nudged Helen and whispered, "Director of the city's Office of Personnel Management. Same level as Edward."
As soon as Martin finished speaking, Helen perked right up like she'd been given a shot of energy. It'd always been that way—merchants couldn't compare with officials. Richard had gotten a girlfriend from such a family. Helen was so excited that she didn't know what to do.
Helen ordered me in a bold voice, "Go check if the dishes in the kitchen are ready. And cut up some fruit to bring over."
On a normal day, Helen wouldn't dare talk to me like that in front of Delilah.
But things were different now. After all, her son had done well in landing a director's daughter as his girlfriend. Her status was way higher than mine as I was from a washed-up merchant family.
Delilah didn't say a word against it. I kept my head down, agreed, and headed to the kitchen.
Well, I'd cut fruit. I could take the rough with the smooth.
Listening to the laughter and chat from the living room, I felt bad for Elena. Joey had messed things up at the hotel entrance, stopping Elena from doing anything to me.
But I could tell from how worked up she'd been the night before. She'd planned to do something really bad to me. And she wasn't stupid. She must have known the risks and what would happen if things went wrong.
But she'd still gone ahead with it. There could only be one reason—love.
So many silly women lost themselves over love. There had been Madeline before, and now Elena was making the same mistake.
"Mrs. Katherine Knight, you're so talented. Oh my, everyone, come look!" Lucy Perez's shout pulled me out of my thoughts.
I looked down. I'd made a beautiful fruit platter. And I'd barely tried. If I'd put in effort, it would've been even nicer.
I had Amelia's pickiness to "thank" for getting me this good.
All the servants crowded around, going on about the platter. One said, "Wow, that's amazing. You must have ten or eight years of practice to cut like that."
Another said, "Mrs. Katherine Knight, could you teach me?"
"Me too," someone else said.
"Me too," added another.
I smiled without saying a word. The truth was, I really wanted to agree, but I didn't dare. Mason had told me to remember my place. People should act like their position demanded.
Dropping by the kitchen now and then was fine, but if I started mixing with the servants like we were the same, he'd never allow it.
"All right, that's enough of that. Mrs. Katherine Knight, Mrs. Helen Knight is waiting for you to take this over," Cathy came over to remind me.
I picked up the platter and took it to the living room. That platter left Moira really impressed too.
Moira said, "Wow, fruit can look this nice? That's amazing. Katherine, can you let me meet who made this? I want to learn from them."
Moira's big, bright eyes blinked, looking at me, full of hope.
"If you like, you can come to me anytime. It's not that hard, you'll get it right away," I said.
Moira's eyes filled with disbelief right away. "Katherine, did you make this?"
I nodded. "Yeah, I did."
I felt a little proud. It was always nice to be praised, it made me feel good inside.
"I didn't see that coming, Kate. You're full of surprises. Good." Delilah was pleased too, and even Helen had to agree, though she sounded reluctant.
Dinner time was nearly here, so I stood up to start arranging for the food to be served. But just as I got to the kitchen door, a loud banging on the door made me jump.
Along with the banging, an angry voice shouted, "Richard, open up! Open the door and explain. You bring another woman home to meet your family. What does that make me?"
I recognized the voice. It was Elena.
I turned to look at the living room. Everyone had stood up, with all sorts of expressions on their faces.
Richard and Helen looked panicked. Delilah seemed a bit angry. And Moira had a totally confused look.
"I'll go check. I'll explain later," Richard was the first to react, saying to Moira.
Then he hurried to the door in a few steps. Even as he passed me, he didn't forget to shoot me a glare.
The front door opened. I only got a look at Elena's tear-streaked face before Richard stepped outside and shut the door again.
It was obvious that serving dinner now wasn't a good idea. And going back to the living room didn't seem right either. I decided to hide in the kitchen and wait to see what would happen.
"Katherine, get over here." I'd just walked into the kitchen when Helen called out loudly.
From her tone, she was looking to pick on me.
I pretended to be obedient, stepping out of the kitchen. I put on a scared look and asked, "Helen, did you need me?"
A loud slap hit my face, and my face was burning with pain.
Helen roared, "Katherine, this is Moira's first time here. What do you mean by having your friend come to our house looking for Richie?"
