Helen and I followed Delilah to the study. The door had just closed when a slap hit Helen's face.
"Delilah, why are you hitting me?" Helen held her cheek, staring at Delilah in disbelief, with a flash of bitterness in her eyes.
Delilah walked to the desk, sat down, and looked at her with authority. "You think I'm old and confused, so you can lie to me? Tell me, what's really going on between Richie and that woman?"
Helen looked flustered but put on a brave front, pretending innocence. "You're so unfair. Katherine's friend came here to cause trouble, trying to ruin Richie's name.
"You're not dealing with her, but you hit me? I've been in this family for over 20 years. I may not have big achievements, but I've worked hard to run the household. She's only been here for a few days, and your heart's already so biased. It's ridiculous!"
I stood to the side, keeping my head down and looking meek, but inside I was furious. But I knew this wasn't the time to speak. Explaining now would seem like covering up, and covering up would look like guilt.
Delilah had sharp insight. Trying to be smart in front of someone who'd lived long enough to see it all? That was asking for trouble.
Clatter. Delilah grabbed a cup from the desk and threw it at her head. A scream rang out as the cup hit the floor, shattering into pieces.
Delilah snapped, "Get out. Someone who only bullies their own family doesn't deserve to be my daughter-in-law. Tomorrow, you and Martin are getting a divorce."
"What?" Helen's eyes went wide in shock. She stared, unable to believe it, and asked again, "What did you say?"
Delilah ignored her, picking up the house intercom instead. "Martin, get to the study right away."
By now, it was clear that Delilah wasn't just angry. She meant it.
Thud. Helen dropped to her knees, holding her forehead, sobbing bitterly, "Delilah, you can't make me divorce Martin. I love him. We have two kids. I won't leave this house, Delilah."
The door flew open. Martin rushed over and lifted Helen up. "Helen, what are you doing? Stop crying. How did you get hurt on your head?"
He glared at me, about to shout, when Delilah spoke. "Why are you glaring at Kate? I did it. Both of you are so stupid. You only blame others instead of thinking about what you've done wrong."
Martin might be indecisive and easily swayed, but he was a total mama's boy.
He'd listen to his wife on just about everything, but when his mom and wife clashed, his mom was always right.
That was one of the reasons Helen feared Delilah.
"Mom, if Helen did something wrong, tell me. I'll talk some sense into her," Martin said.
"You'll talk sense into her? Hmph, who knows who'd end up talking sense into whom. You fool, letting your wife tell you what to do. She'll get you killed someday," Delilah said.
"Mom, calm down. You can't blame Helen for today. She was just too angry," Martin said, sticking up for Helen.
Delilah let out an angry laugh. "Oh? Then tell me, who is to blame?"
But before Martin could speak, Delilah slammed her hand on the desk and stood up. "I'll tell you what happened, so you two stop picking on Kate, the good kid. That girl was Richie's doing. It has nothing to do with Kate."
Martin and Helen stayed quiet, but their faces showed they weren't convinced. Delilah let out a cold laugh. "I wanted to save you the embarrassment, but if you don't care, I'll spell it out. No point in you two being upset.
"That girl has been coming around every night these past few days. She sneaked into Richie's room and then left in the middle of the night or early morning. You thought I didn't know it?
"I refuse to believe you two had no idea of it. Helen, as the lady of the house, the servants must've told you. Yet you stood there, putting down Mase's wife, throwing dirt on her name. Did you think I was blind?
"A man having a few flings isn't the end of the world, but blaming someone else for what he's done is wrong. Five years ago... Never mind, let's leave the past alone. You two are getting divorced tomorrow. This kind of thing will never happen again."
I bowed my head as far as I could, scared they'd see me smiling. All the hurt I'd felt just vanished. In my head, I cheered for Delilah. Way to go, Delilah!
"Delilah, I know I was wrong. Please don't make me get a divorce. I'll never do it again. I'll apologize to Kate, right now." As Helen spoke, she began to sob so bitterly that I almost felt bad for her.
"Kate, I'm sorry. I apologize to you. Please ask Delilah to let me off." Helen even bowed to me as she said this.
My head went fuzzy. Wasn't Helen making me look like a bad guy? Honestly.
I didn't ask Delilah for mercy. Instead, I also bowed to Helen as I said, "Helen, you can't bow to me. You did nothing wrong. You were just being a good mother, wanting to protect Richie. Delilah won't really stay mad at you.
"I'm the younger one. You hit me, but it's fine. Even if you wronged me, I won't hold it against you."
"What's going on here?" Joey's voice came from the doorway. I turned to see her, Mason, and Richard had all come back.
When Helen saw Richard, it was like she'd found someone to lean on. She ran over, sobbing, "Richie, Delilah's throwing me out of the house."
Once Helen ran over, I stood next to Mason, silently watching her put on her show.
Richard didn't even get a chance to speak before Joey blew up. She stormed over to Delilah and yelled, "Why toss Mom out? If you're kicking someone, kick us all out.
"Then you can be here all by yourself. You boss everyone around like we actually want to stay in this house."
After that, Joey grabbed Helen's arm. "Let's go. We're not sticking around to get pushed around."
Livid, Helen smacked Joey's face. "Zip it. Not another word."
"I'm defending you, and you hit me? Seriously, are you my mom?" Joey shot back.
"Joey, cut it out." Richard's command worked like magic. Joey clammed up right away.
Richard stepped forward. "Grandma, this is all on me. Do whatever you want to me, but please don't punish Mom. If they get divorced, Moira's parents might think something's wrong."
That single sentence did more than all of Helen's begging and tantrums combined.
To Delilah, family benefits mattered most. Breaking up Helen and Martin would definitely complicate Richard's marriage.
"Send that woman overseas. Make sure she never sets foot here again," Delilah said, dropping the divorce talk and changing the subject.
Everyone but Joey knew this was Delilah's way of giving in.
"Which woman?" Joey elbowed me and asked.
"Elena," Delilah replied.
"So she really is involved with Richie? I thought she was just trying to mess with me." Joey's words dropped like a bomb, and every eye in the room landed on her.
Delilah's stare turned ice-cold. "Explain. Now."
