This café was really private. Most customers were either here for business or couples whispering sweet nothings. There were only private rooms.
Once you closed the door, no one would bother you all day unless you went out to call a waiter.
I was so anxious but had no idea what to do.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door. It perked me right up.
"Kate? Kate, are you in there? Open the door." It was Mason.
Oh my god, how did he get here? He must have come to save me. Perfect timing.
I wanted to shout and tell him I'd been kidnapped, but I could hardly make any sounds through the handkerchief.
The soundproofing was too good. He couldn't hear me outside, but Elena heard me.
She put down the phone, walked over, and glared at me fiercely. "Don't make a sound," she hissed. "Or I'll strangle you right now."
The knocking kept going like he wouldn't stop until someone opened up. I could hear the voice outside. "Kate, open up. I know you're in there."
I was so anxious that sweat broke out on my forehead. Elena stood over me, watching me like a hawk. Her hands were on my neck, ready to squeeze any second.
The worst part was that I couldn't say a word. Was I really going to die in my so-called best friend's hands after making it through my jerk ex?
The knocking went on a bit longer. Then I heard Jack's voice. "Mr. Knight, Mrs. Knight probably isn't here. Let's check other floors."
"All right. Let's head to the sixth floor and knock on every door," Mason said.
"Yes, sir," Jack replied.
Then I heard footsteps walking away. They got quieter and quieter until I couldn't hear them at all.
I felt Elena relax, but my heart dropped like it was thrown into a bucket of ice.
"Come with me. I warn you, don't try anything, or I'll kill you." Elena fumbled with the ropes tying me. I smiled to myself.
Once the ropes were off, she'd never hold me down that easily.
But when the ropes came loose, I found I couldn't move. I'd been tied for so long that my circulation was bad, and my legs were numb.
She yanked me toward the door. The moment she opened it, a swift kick sent her flying. Then I fell into a familiar set of arms.
Mason held me close, worry written all over his face. "Kate, are you hurt?"
"I'm terrified." The second I saw him, I couldn't hold back my fear. I sobbed, pounding his chest. "What took you so long? I was freaking out."
"Shh, it's over. I'm here now. Don't cry, baby." Mason soothed me.
Tears streamed down my face. Yeah, I was being dramatic. I wasn't actually in danger, but I felt so wronged and just wanted Mason to feel bad for me.
Jack, clearly tired of my non-stop crying, stepped forward respectfully. "Mr. Knight, what should we do with her?"
Elena lay crumpled in the corner, knocked unconscious by Jack's kick, still out cold.
Mason shot her a look of disgust. "Teach her a lesson she'll never forget."
"Yes, sir." Jack started to move.
"Wait, what are you planning?" I wriggled out of Mason's grasp, stepping between them and Elena. My heart raced as I stared them down.
"Kate, come here. Let's go. This isn't your problem," Mason said firmly.
"No, she needs medical help. She's not in her right mind." I tapped my temple for emphasis.
"Katherine, you're the one not in your right mind. When will you learn? Stop playing the martyr," Mason said. His scowl could've killed. Obviously, he was furious.
Even though she'd tried to strangle me, I couldn't turn my back. I didn't know what Jack had in store, but I couldn't just watch.
I stood my ground, arms outstretched to block Jack. He hesitated, unsure of what to do.
"Enough. Let's go." Mason shoved past Jack, tucking me under his arm. As we left, he barked an order. "Take her to the psych ward."
"Yes, sir," Jack replied.
I finally felt at ease. No more worrying about Elena. Now I should be worried about myself. Being held under Mason's arm like this was both humiliating and uncomfortable.
But no matter how I struggled, I couldn't get free.
"Jerk, let me go. You..." I froze when we got outside. A dozen bodyguards stood in a neat line, all staring at us.
I'd never seen Mason make such a big fuss, bringing so many people to find me. Did that mean he cared a lot about me? Could he be in love with me just like I was with him?
That sudden thought made me so giddy that I could barely think straight. While I was zoning out, Mason had already carried me into the elevator.
The elevator started going down, and I finally came to my senses. "Mason, put me down."
He just dropped me.
I quickly grabbed the wall to steady myself, barely keeping from falling.
Ding. The elevator doors opened. Mason strode out, leaving me inside.
"Hey, wait up. Why're you walking so fast?" I hurried after him, muttering as I chased.
A line of black cars was parked outside the café. When we came out, the driver rushed to open the door. I was about to say thanks when Mason yanked me into the car.
We sat side by side in the back seat. His face was so stormy it looked like it could pour rain.
I knew I was in the wrong, so I tried to cheer him up. "Are you mad? Come on, don't be. I just got out of a scary situation. You're not even gonna comfort me? And now you're angry?"
I inched closer to Mason, trying to sweet-talk my way out of it.
But no matter what I did, he didn't react. The driver kept his eyes on the road, acting like he hadn't heard a thing.
"Mason, I was wrong," I said, but he didn't budge.
"Mase, you were so great today. You're my hero." I kept going.
He still had that icy look on his face.
"Don't be mad, okay? I'll do whatever you say from now on," I said.
"Shut up." He finally spoke, and I had to stop.
Fine, I'll shut up. Like it was a big deal.
The car pulled right up to Knight Manor. As soon as we walked in, Mason dragged me upstairs. Helen was in the living room. When she saw me, she asked, "Did that woman agree to stay away from Richie?"
Mason's eyes were sharp as daggers. "Why are you still here?" Helen immediately shrank back onto the couch, not saying a word.
Right, I remembered. Delilah told Helen to go back to her parents' yesterday, but Helen hadn't left. Looks like there'd be some drama tonight.
Before I could even feel that little spark of satisfaction, Mason pulled me into the room. The door slammed shut with a loud bang, making me jump.
"Mase, don't... don't look at me like that. It's scary," I said. His stare was like a knife like it would cut straight into my heart.
"You ungrateful woman. Do you have any clue how dangerous today was for you?" Mason said.
"I know. But I'm fine now, right?" I said.
I forced a small smile, trying to ease the tension. I felt a little guilty. No wonder Mason was mad. Even though I let Elena go, I knew I'd been pretty stupid.
