Cain's grip tightened around the phone, his voice a low growl. "What did you just say?"
The nurse on the other end flinched at his tone. "Miss Elle Blackwood… she found out the truth about her father's death. She's—"
Silence. Then nothing but Cain's ragged breathing, his fingers curling into fists so tight his knuckles turned bone-white.
"Damn it!" He hurled the phone across the office, watching it shatter against the wall. Aliya shot up from the couch, eyes wide as they darted between Cain's stormy expression and the broken pieces on the floor.
"What happened?"
He dragged a hand through his hair, frustration boiling over. "She found the pills, Aliya. Somehow, she found them. Now she knows everything."
Aliya's face paled. "That's impossible. We hid them well. She was never supposed to—"
"She's gone." Cain spat the words like poison, pacing like a caged animal. "Vanished from the hospital. We have no idea what she'll do next. If she talks to the wrong person, we're finished. Jail. Ruin. Everything."
Aliya's voice was barely a whisper. "We're screwed."
Cain whirled on her. "We need to find her. Now!" His voice cracked like a whip. "She's still my wife. I won't let her walk away."
ELLE'S POV
Lost. No direction, no plan. I slumped at the bus stop, watching vehicles blur past. No money. No phone. Just the cold bite of the wind and the weight of the truth pressing down on me.
But for the first time in years—I could breathe.
I tugged my jacket tighter, goosebumps prickling my skin. The sky hung heavy with storm clouds, threatening to burst. I should've dressed better than this damn Chanel set.
But my mind kept circling back to James.
Cain's lies unraveled like rotten thread. James never abandoned me. He'd been framed. And if Cain went to such lengths to stop our wedding… there was a reason.
I had to find James.
I pushed to my feet. Zane—James' best friend, his best man—he'd know where to look.
Before I could move, tires screeched beside me. A black sedan rolled up, window lowering to reveal Aliya's smirk.
"What are you doing, Elle?" Her voice dripped with mock concern. "You should know better than to run."
I spun to bolt, but a meaty arm hooked around my waist, yanking me backward. I screamed—raw, desperate—but the street was empty. The car door slammed shut, locks clicking like a death sentence.
Aliya leaned in, her smile razor-sharp. "You should've stayed Cain's obedient little wife. But no—you had to dig up the past."
My pulse hammered as I fought against the ropes binding me.
Aliya crossed her legs, inspecting her nails like this was just another Tuesday. "You really thought you'd escape us?"
I scanned for an exit. The door? Too risky with the hulking driver beside me.
I locked eyes with Aliya. "Was it just the money?"
She laughed. "Oh, sweetheart. Money was just the beginning."
My stomach twisted. "My father's company. The one I was supposed to inherit."
Aliya tilted her head. "Your father would've never let Cain take over. But you? You handed it to him. Signed your life away."
Rage burned behind my eyes. "You killed him. Switched his pills. Murdered him slowly."
Aliya's grin was ice. "He was a dying old man. We just… helped things along."
The words hit like a punch. I knew it—but hearing it? It hollowed me out.
"How dare you?" I lunged, but the ropes held me fast.
Aliya's smirk was a knife twisting in my gut.
Then—instinct took over.
I lunged for the steering wheel, yanking it hard. The car veered violently.
"What the hell?!" The driver grappled for control.
I threw myself at Aliya, clawing for the door. She shrieked as my knee jammed into her stomach.
The world spun—tires screeching, metal groaning—then impact.
Darkness.
