My whole body screamed in protest as I forced my eyes open. I ignored the searing pain, my legs trembling as I pushed myself up. The wreckage of the car loomed around me—shattered glass, twisted metal, seats torn from impact. Through the battered window, the road stretched into darkness, empty and eerily silent. No one was coming to help.
I staggered out, my vision swimming, and stumbled onto the asphalt. My only thought: Run.
The driver was still unconscious, but it wouldn't last. Any second now, he'd wake up shouting, and Cain's men would be on me. I couldn't let that happen. If Aliya caught me, she'd drag me back. So I ran, my lungs burning, my legs barely holding me.
Then—the growl of an engine.
My stomach dropped. Cain sent more men.
I veered off the road, plunging into the forest. The trees swallowed me whole, the darkness so thick I could barely see my own hands. But I didn't stop. Behind me, headlights cut through the night as the car screeched to a halt.
I froze, pressing myself against a tree. Flashlights flickered between the trunks, beams slicing through the black.
"She's injured. She won't get far," a voice sneered.
My fingers closed around a thick branch. A weapon.
The men fanned out, their footsteps crunching over dead leaves. One passed dangerously close—his back turned for just a second.
I lunged.
The branch cracked against his skull. He grunted, staggering forward, but before he could shout, I shoved him hard. He hit the ground with a thud.
The others whirled toward the noise.
I didn't wait. I ran.
My body was failing—legs weak, breath ragged. I glanced back to see how close they were—too close—and my foot caught on a root.
I screamed as I hit the dirt.
A flashlight beam pinned me. "There she is!"
I scrambled up, ignoring the pain, but my legs buckled. They were closing in. I sobbed, forcing myself forward. They'd catch me. Take me back. Turn me into Cain's puppet again.
Then—a hand clamped around my wrist.
"Enough running, Mrs. Blackwood."
I screamed, thrashing, but his grip was iron.
No. Not again.
I stomped on his foot, drove my elbow into his ribs. He howled, releasing me—but not for long. He grabbed me again, fingers digging into my arms. I clawed at him, screaming—
Then a shadow blurred past me.
A fist connected with the man's face. He dropped like a stone.
I gasped.
The shadow stepped forward—tall, clad in a dark coat. Moonlight caught the sharp line of his jaw, the familiar way he held himself.
Then he turned.
Our eyes met.
My breath vanished.
"James?"
