Cane POV:
I woke up to cold sheets and silence.
The spot beside me where she slept was empty, her warmth already gone. I thought she was in the bathroom. Maybe getting water, Maybe sitting by the window, like she sometimes did when sleep wouldn't come.
"How long would you be in there!" I said, raising my voice a notch while I looked around the room. I got off the bed, flexing my neck. But then something caught my eyes. A paper, more like a note
Folded neatly. Sitting where her head should’ve been. My name scrawled in her small handwriting.
I sat on the bed my heart already racing
I unfolded the paper with shaking hands.
> I’m sorry.
I did want to see where this thing between us would go, but I can't.
I'm carrying his child.
I might say I hate him for controlling me, but there's a part of me who craves him.
And Emma… I can’t let her die.
I have to do this.
You will understand someday
—Lena.
I looked at the words hoping they might disappear if I took my eyes off them for a second.
They didn’t.
I read it again.
Then again.
And something inside me broke.
I flinged the note across the room and punched my fist into the headboard so hard it cracked. My breathing was loud and fast. She was gone. She walked out in the middle of the damn night. Alone. To him.
To Dominic.
I stood, pacing the room, running my hand through my hair. This wasn’t happening. She knew what he was. What he’d done. What he would do.
And still, she went back.
I kicked the chair by the desk in anger, the noise doing nothing to calm the rage within.
Fifteen minutes later, I was in the garage, phone pressed tight to my ear.
“Pick up, pick up, pick up—”
“Cane?”
“Tracker, I need you. I need eyes on Dominic’s place. I need to know every exit, every guard, every window he opens to breathe.”
“Jesus, man. What happened?”
“She left. She went back to him. She left me a note. She’s pregnant. And she’s scared out of her fucking mind.”
There was a pause.
“Say no more,” Tracker said. “I’m on it.”
“Three days,” I muttered. “He gave her three days to return or her sister dies. I’m getting her out before that timer hits zero.”
I spent the next hour calling every name I had saved from a past I tried to leave behind.
Favors I never wanted to collect.
Debts I swore I’d never touch.
Now I was cashing them all in.
“Yo, Cane. I thought you were done with the old scene.”
“I’m not calling to catch up, Tyrell. I need info on Dominic Romano. Everything you’ve got. His people, his property, his dirt.”
“Romano?” Tyrell whistled. “You really got into it with him?”
“I didn’t get into it. He took her. And I’m taking her back.”
I barely ate. Barely sat. Every second felt like I was losing my chance at getting her back.
By noon, I had sketches of Dominic’s estate spread out on my desk. Photos from security feeds. Maps of escape routes. Everything I could find.
But it still wasn’t enough.
He was too careful. Too guarded. And I knew damn well he’d be watching Lena like a hawk.
He wouldn’t let her breathe without permission.
And that killed me.
“Cane?”
I looked up, surprised to hear that voice.
“Sean?” My eyebrows shot up. I hadn’t seen him in over two years.
He walked into my office slowly, the same blank look in his eyes. “You’re in trouble. That’s the only time you call in your old crew.”
I didn’t respond, just stared.
Then he said the words that froze me in place.
“I know where Dominic’s keeping Emma.”
My mouth went dry. “What?”
Sean nodded. “He doesn’t have her at the estate. Too risky. She’s being held somewhere else. Secret medical facility. Off the grid. But I’ve seen it.”
My heart slammed hard against my ribs. “Why are you telling me this?”
“Because you’re the only idiot who’d actually try to save both sisters,” he said, folding his arms. “And because i want Dominic gone, no questions”
I walked toward him. “Where is it?”
He pulled out a USB drive and placed it in my palm. “Everything I know is on there. But you’ve got three days, Cane. You try to go in blind, you won’t come back. Neither will she.”
I nodded slowly. “Then we don’t go in blind.”
That night, I stared at the photos again.
Lena’s smile.
Lena holding a book with her knees tucked to her chest.
Lena on my couch in my hoodie, laughing at something stupid I said.
She was the only person who ever made me feel like I wasn’t a monster.
She saw me, flaws and all, and didn’t run.
Until now.
And even then, she didn’t run from me.
She ran for her sister.
God, I wanted to hate her for leaving. But all I could do was love her more for it.
I made a call to Tracker. “We’re going in. End of day tomorrow.”
“You got a plan?”
“Working on it.”
“You sure about this, Cane?”
“No,” I admitted. “But I’m not letting her live a single more day thinking she’s alone in that mansion. I don’t care how much money he’s got. How many men. I’m not leaving her there.”
There was silence on the other end, then Tracker’s voice again. “Alright, boss. Let’s bring her home.”
By midnight, I was packing weapons, blueprints, wires, and every ounce of courage I had left.
Sean sat on the couch, watching me. “You think she’s worth all this?”
I zipped the bag shut. “She’s the only thing that ever was.”
He nodded. “Then don’t screw it up.”
I slept for one hour.
And I dreamed of her.
Her laugh. Her cries. Her face when she said my name.
When I woke up, the fire in my chest had turned into something cold and sharp.
I was going to get her back.
Even if it killed me.
Even if she never loved me again.
Even if she walked away in the end.
I just wanted her safe.
And Dominic?
Dominic would finally learn what it meant to lose everything.
