The snow fell softly outside as Lucas tucked the box of bracelets into the glove compartment.
Just as he was about to shut it, his fingers brushed against a stack of documents. His brow furrowed.
He couldn’t remember putting them there.
Before he could pull them out, his phone buzzed.
Isabella’s name flashed on the screen.
“My parents just left,” she said, her voice light. “A few friends heard I was discharged and want to celebrate. Are you free? Want to join?”
This time, Lucas didn’t hesitate.
“No.”
Her tone darkened instantly. She opened her mouth to protest, but he cut her off.
“I have a meeting.”
He hung up, slammed the glove compartment shut, and drove home.
The usually lively Sinclair estate was unnervingly silent.
His gaze swept over the living room. Something was missing.
The tie he’d left on the coffee table months ago—gone.
The mug Evelyn always used—nowhere in sight.
Even the throw pillows she’d picked out had vanished.
Small things. Things he never paid attention to—until they weren’t there.
“Walter,” he called.
The elderly butler appeared promptly.
“Why is half the house empty?”
“Mrs. Sinclair disposed of them,” Walter answered carefully. Then, after a pause, “Mr. Sinclair, are you truly proceeding with the—”
The front door burst open.
“Lucas! Knew we’d find you here!” A group of his friends stumbled in, laughing. “It’s been ages! Let’s grab drinks!”
Walter’s unfinished question—divorce—was drowned out by their voices.
At the bar, his friends kept his glass filled with water instead of alcohol.
Lucas barely touched it.
His fingers hovered over his phone as he typed:
Did you go out today? Where? When are you coming back? Send me the address. I’ll pick you up. The roads are icy—be careful.
Before he could send it, Dominic grabbed his arm.
His face had gone pale.
“We need to go,” Dominic said urgently. “Now. Something’s happened.”
