The afternoon sun was dipping low when Evelyn's plane touched down in Falverton. Among the crowd at arrivals, she spotted a familiar face—Vivian Hart, her former professor from Aeloria College.
Vivian had left academia during Evelyn's senior year to pursue entrepreneurship. Now, three years later, she had firmly established herself in Sunstone Valley.
It was Vivian’s job offer that had finally convinced Evelyn to take the leap and move abroad. Vivian, still in her early 30s, had always been approachable with her students. Now, in the professional world, she radiated an even warmer, more grounded energy. The moment she saw Evelyn, she broke into a wide grin.
"Evelyn! It’s been forever!" she called out.
Evelyn wheeled her suitcase over, smiling. "Professor Hart! I can’t believe it’s really you!"
"Please, just call me Vivian now," she laughed, waving a hand dismissively.
Her easy demeanor instantly put Evelyn at ease, especially in this unfamiliar country where she was still finding her footing. Without hesitation, Evelyn agreed.
Vivian hummed in approval, linking arms with Evelyn as they headed toward the exit.
On the drive back, they reminisced—about chaotic classroom moments, late-night study sessions, and bittersweet farewell parties. Nostalgia wrapped around them like a warm blanket.
"Evelyn," Vivian said, glancing at her, "when I invited you to Amethria after your master’s, you turned me down. What changed?"
Evelyn’s gaze flickered, but she recovered quickly. After a pause, she answered carefully, "Back then, I was lost. With everything happening at home, leaving just didn’t feel right."
She exhaled. "But now… I realized I’ll never figure things out if I don’t take the leap. Maybe I’ll find what I’m looking for along the way."
Vivian nodded knowingly. She had faced similar crossroads in her own career. "Life doesn’t come with a roadmap. I taught for years before realizing academia wasn’t for me. Sometimes, you just have to trust the process."
She gave Evelyn’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "You’re young. It’s okay to feel uncertain. But courage? That’s what will lead you where you need to be."
Seeing Vivian’s success—her confidence, her contentment—gave Evelyn the push she needed.
When they arrived at the apartment, Vivian led her inside. It was a cozy two-bedroom with a south-facing layout, sunlight spilling across the hardwood floors.
A supermarket stood just downstairs. The space was clean, bright, and instantly welcoming, easing the exhaustion that had settled in Evelyn’s bones.
Vivian gave her a quick tour, pointing out essentials before whisking her out for dinner. Afterward, they stopped by the supermarket to stock up on groceries.
Once they returned, Vivian left her with the keys and a warm smile, not wanting to intrude.
Alone, Evelyn showered and collapsed onto the bed, staring at the darkening sky outside. A strange disconnection settled over her.
Just yesterday, at this exact hour, she had been curled up in a blanket at the villa in Feston, watching snowflakes drift past the window. Now, she was oceans away, starting over.
The silence of the room pressed in. Her thoughts spiraled until, eventually, sleep claimed her.
In her dream, she stood at Lucas Sinclair’s wedding. This time, Isabella didn’t run—she went through with it. Evelyn watched as they exchanged rings, vowing forever.
Amid cheers and applause, they kissed, sealing their future. Evelyn slipped away unnoticed, returning to the quiet campus where she buried herself in three more years of study.
After graduation, she flew to Amethria and never looked back. In that fleeting lifetime, her only connection to Lucas was those four years as classmates.
After that, they became strangers. She remained nothing more than a forgotten name, a face lost in his past.
The next morning, Evelyn woke with a heavy heart. The dream had felt too real, blurring the line between memory and imagination. She sat on the couch for a long time, lost in thought.
Around noon, Vivian’s call snapped her back to reality. "Evelyn, you awake? I’m downstairs. Hungry?"
