Jacob had pinned all his hopes for redemption on his youngest daughter, Becca.
From sunrise to sunset, he and Cassie orbited around her like devoted satellites—doting on her, fretting over every detail, and escorting her to every training session.
Meanwhile, their other daughter, Lily, the one with cerebral palsy? They kept her chained in the bathroom like a dangerous animal, terrified she'd wreck the house if left unsupervised.
Her meals were scraps tossed carelessly onto the floor, her clothes nothing but Becca's outgrown, threadbare hand-me-downs—ill-fitting and worn.
One evening, Jacob stormed home to find the bathroom in chaos. Fury erupted inside him like a wildfire. He glared at Lily and roared, "How did I end up with a daughter like you? You've destroyed this family! We never should've had you. I never should've taken you back. You should've died a long time ago!"
Cassie followed suit, delivering a vicious kick to Lily as if she weren't their child, but some filthy stray dog.
Lily hung her head, tears silently dripping onto the grimy floor. She stared at them in numb confusion. What had she done wrong? She was their daughter too, yet while Becca basked in their love, all she ever got was cruelty.
Time flew, and before anyone realized it, two months had passed. The day of the National Swimming Championships had arrived—the first official showdown between Natalie and Becca.
The venue was packed, buzzing with electric energy. Spectators poured in like a tidal wave, filling every seat.
Natalie's fans dominated a huge section of the stands, their banners glowing under the stadium lights. But Becca, the rising star, had her own legion of supporters, their deafening cheers ricocheting off the walls.
I spotted Jacob and Cassie instantly, hovering around Becca like overprotective bodyguards—one handing her water, the other dabbing her sweat, their voices shrill with encouragement. "Becca, you've got this! You're the best!"
I made my way to Natalie and gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Don't stress. Just focus on staying safe." She nodded, but then her face twisted in pain, her body swaying unsteadily.
My stomach dropped. I grabbed her just in time—her skin was burning. "Natalie, what's wrong? Are you running a fever?"
The team doctor rushed over. After a quick check, his expression darkened. "She's got a fever. She's dizzy."
And the race was starting in five minutes.
Seeing how weak she was, I begged her, "Natalie, maybe you should sit this one out."
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Jacob smirking, oozing smug confidence like victory was already his.
But Natalie shook her head, her voice faint but fierce. "I can't quit now. I'll fight to the end."
I stroked her hair, heart aching with pride. "That's my girl. Give it everything—but don't break yourself."
The starting whistle shrieked.
The swimmers shot into the water like arrows, waves exploding around them as they surged forward.
The crowd erupted, the roar of cheers crashing through the arena like a storm.
