In the next instant, Jacob charged at me like a wild animal, slamming me to the ground as he bellowed, "It was you! Wanda, you jealous witch! You couldn't stand to see my daughter win, so you took her!"
Luckily, I'd seen this coming. With a quick glance to the side, a team of security guards rushed in, stepping between us to block him.
I steadied myself and shot him a cold look. "Jacob, get a grip. My daughter and I have been here the whole time. When exactly would we have taken yours?"
Just then, Cassie hurried over, freezing at my words.
"She's right," she said, her voice shaking, tears spilling over. "They never left. Then who took Becca? Jacob, what do we do? If something happens to her, I—I can't go on!"
Cassie crumpled into sobs while Jacob paced like a caged animal, both utterly lost. Then his phone rang. Desperate, he snatched it up and barked, "Who is this? Give me back my daughter!"
But the voice on the other end wasn't what he expected. It was Lily—the daughter they'd locked away at home.
"Dad… Mom…" she stammered. "Why do you love Becca so much but treat me like I'm nothing? You hit me, ignore me… I don't want a sister anymore."
Jacob's face turned purple with rage. "You ungrateful little brat! After everything we've done for you, this is how you repay us?" His voice boomed through the phone. "Let Becca go now, or I swear I'll cut you off for good!"
A long silence followed before Lily spoke again—her voice eerily calm. "You never really saw me as your daughter, did you? Eighteen years ago, you dumped me at an orphanage and never looked back. I waited for you… and this is what I got."
A pause. Then, icy and deliberate: "If you don't want me… then you don't get to keep Becca either."
The line crackled, the sound of rustling—then a blood-curdling scream tore through the phone. Becca's scream.
Scuffling noises followed before everything went dead silent.
Jacob and Cassie shrieked in horror. "NO!"
But Lily remained chillingly composed. "Since you hate me so much," she said, "I'll give this body back to you." A heavy thud—something hitting the ground.
The room fell into a suffocating silence. Jacob and Cassie collapsed, wailing like wounded animals.
"Call the police! An ambulance! Somebody—help! Save Becca!"
But by the time help arrived, it was too late. All they found were two lifeless bodies.
I sighed when I heard the news.
In the weeks that followed, I'd sometimes spot Jacob and Cassie on the streets—or what was left of them. Jacob, once so arrogant, now shuffled like a broken man, his face hollow, his steps unsteady. Cassie wandered like a ghost, her hair tangled, her eyes empty.
They were shells of themselves—just drifting, lost.
A month later, a neighbor leaned in, whispering, "Did you hear? Jacob and Cassie jumped off a cliff. Their bodies were… unrecognizable."
I sighed again.
Looking back at how they'd schemed and lied for their own gain, I never imagined fate would repay them with such cruelty.
My daughter, sensing my thoughts, wrapped an arm around me. "Mom, they got what they deserved. People like that don't deserve to be parents."
I looked at her—bright, alive, full of warmth—and suddenly, none of it mattered. Blood ties, success, revenge… none of it.
She was my daughter. The most precious thing in my life. And I would love her with everything I had, for as long as I lived.
