"We're college students with plenty of free time, and we love doing good deeds!"
"You'd better take responsibility and raise Lily right. We'll be watching. If you abandon her again, we're calling the cops—no second chances!"
The smiles on Jacob and Cassie's faces vanished instantly. They winced, nodding frantically like scolded children, their voices shaky. "Y-yes, of course. We understand."
Meanwhile, Lily beamed, her voice loud and gleeful. "I have a mommy and daddy now!"
On the other side, the college students crowded around me and Natalie, their eyes shining with admiration.
"Queen of the swimming world, you're amazing! Natalie's so lucky to have a mom like you!"
Natalie's eyes welled up. She looked at me, her voice trembling. "Mom… thank you."
The crowd burst into applause, the sound roaring like thunder.
Natalie and I hugged tightly, saying more in that embrace than words ever could.
All those years of struggle—every hardship, every injustice—had led to this moment. And it was worth it. I'd poured my heart into raising her, and I'd never given up.
As for Jacob and Cassie? They had no choice but to slink home in shame, dragging their foolish daughter with them.
But bringing Lily back from the orphanage was just the beginning of their nightmare.
At home, Lily's ear-splitting shrieks turned their lives upside down. She was a human tornado—grabbing, throwing, demanding food one second, screaming for cartoons the next. Pots clattered, objects flew, and chaos ruled.
Within days, Jacob and Cassie looked like they'd aged a decade—faces gaunt, spirits broken.
Then, one day, I ran into Jacob on the street.
Gone was his polished facade. Dark circles hung under his bloodshot eyes like bruises. He glared at me, venom in his voice. "You're loving this, aren't you, Wanda? Watching me suffer? Well, don't hold your breath!"
I smirked, unfazed. "I just gave you back your daughter."
His face twisted with rage. "Don't get cocky! I've still got Becca Hamilton—my youngest. She's built like a champion. Cassie's been training her for years. Just wait—at the Nationals, she'll crush Natalie and take the title!"
I just smiled.
Men. So painfully average, yet so ridiculously confident.
