"Ethan! Hey, Ethan!" The shout came from outside, loud and urgent.
Ethan recognized his cousin Lucas Aldridge's voice immediately. He rushed out to the yard where Lucas stood by the gate, waving him over.
"What's going on, cuz?" Ethan asked. He always called Lucas "cousin" since the guy was a year older.
"It's Oliver—he's leaving for that construction job in Springfield today. Wanna come help me see him off? Dude's packed half the house and I could use an extra pair of hands," Lucas explained, jerking his thumb toward his place.
Ethan nodded. "Yeah, sure thing." Morning boredom had been crushing him anyway—way better than staring at the walls.
At Lucas's place, Oliver Valois already had a duffel slung over his shoulder while his wife Isabella Rubenstein struggled with another bag. Behind them, Victoria Lefèvre—Lucas's mom—held her five-year-old grandson's hand.
When Victoria spotted Ethan, her cheeks went scarlet and she suddenly found the ground fascinating. Running into her secret lover during a family moment? Awkward didn't even cover it.
Ethan played it cool, grabbing the bag from Isabella. "We got this, sis. No need for everyone to trek to the bus stop."
Isabella hesitated, then nodded. "Alright, boys. Bring me back my husband in one piece when he visits." She ushered Victoria and the kid inside as the three men headed out.
They walked Oliver to the village bus stop, waited until the rattle-trap of a bus swallowed him whole, then ambled back in comfortable silence.

Ever since I accidentally walked in on her shower last month? Ice queen treatment. Like I planned to see her standing there all soapy and—okay yeah, the woman's built like a pinup model, but it was an honest mistake!
Golden Heights isn't your average gig. Since our residents could probably buy City Hall, the municipal government runs security directly. Mostly it's cake—gate duty means reading paperbacks, surveillance is Netflix with extra steps, and patrols? Basically sanctioned flirting with bored housewives.
Then the old team leader (ex-military, no-nonsense type) got transferred. Enter Monica. Late twenties, legs for days, and walks like she's on a runway. A woman bossing around a squad of guys raised eyebrows until the rumor mill spat out her resume: former deputy section chief at the Bureau of Land and Resources. Though if you ask me...
