                    "What happened to her face?"
Victoria noticed Ethan's gaze lingering on my swollen features, but when he showed no further reaction, she relaxed and continued spinning her web of lies.
She didn't realize Ethan failed to recognize me—not with my face battered beyond recognition, streaked with dried blood. Never in my life had I looked so broken.
The damage was so severe that even Ethan, who had known me since we were children, couldn't place me at first glance. His expression darkened, and he rose abruptly.
"Enough. This won't happen again. Replace the receptionist. Fire every security guard on duty today."
The room fell silent under the weight of his fury. Once the orders were given, he turned to leave.
Then he felt it—a weak tug at his pant leg.
He looked down.
There I was, clinging to him with the last of my strength.
"Eth..."
The childhood nickname hit him like a physical blow. Only I ever called him that.
Victoria lunged forward, her face twisted with jealousy. "Mr. Blackwood, she's deranged! Who knows what diseases she's carrying—"
Ethan shoved her away so hard she stumbled. "Get the hell away from her."
The venom in his voice sent a visible ripple of fear through the room. Victoria's glare burned into me, but no one dared move.
With trembling hands, Ethan wiped the blood from my face. His voice cracked. "Isabella."
A whisper, desperate. "You're alive. You have to be."
No one had ever seen the unshakable Ethan Blackwood like this—raw, terrified. The air thickened with dread. Victoria remained frozen on the floor.
Ethan lifted me into his arms, his gaze sweeping the room like a blade. "Who. Did. This."
I tried to raise a hand to soothe the fury in his eyes, but my arm gave out. A fresh trickle of blood escaped my lips, staining his tailored suit.
Then everything went black.
I woke in a sterile hospital room. Ethan wasn't there—just a nurse adjusting my IV.
"You're awake!" She handed me water. "Mr. Blackwood stepped out but said he'd return soon."
As she spoke, the door swung open.
Ethan took one look at me—bruised, bandaged, fragile—and his eyes turned stormy.
"No one who hurt you will walk away unscathed."
The door opened again. Victoria was shoved inside by two bodyguards, her designer dress torn, skin marred with angry red cuts.
Ethan forced her to her knees with a brutal kick. His touch gentled as he brushed hair from my forehead.
"While you were unconscious, darling, she learned what pain truly feels like." His voice was ice. "Whatever she took from you, I'll take from her tenfold."
Victoria whimpered, her body trembling. At Ethan's sharp exhale, she flinched violently.
Those three hours had clearly been hell.
"Mrs. Blackwood—" She crawled toward me, tears streaking her ruined makeup. "I didn't know! Please, have mercy! Your husband already—look at me!" She pulled at her shredded sleeves, revealing more wounds. "I'm suffering enough!"
Her pain was temporary. Mine was eternal.
I turned toward the window, a single tear escaping.
Too late.
My hand drifted to my empty stomach. The ghost of a smile touched my lips. "Ethan... our baby is gone."
