My breath hitched.
Jaxon cared that much about the scarf I gave him... Does he feel the same way about me?
But before I could process the thought, Ruby's eyes welled up with tears, glistening like broken glass.
"Jaxon, I—I just thought the scarf was so pretty. I only wanted to try it on, but then it... it tore." She sniffled, clutching the ruined fabric. "It has your name stitched into it. Olivia made this for you, didn't she? I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to ruin it..."
The edges of the scarf were clean-cut—obviously slashed, not torn.
Her lie was flimsy, but Jaxon bought it.
Instead of scolding her, he took her hand gently, his voice softening. "It's just a scarf. Are you okay? Did you cut yourself?"
Then, like a knife to my chest—
"If you like it, I'll have Olivia make you one too."
My heart turned to ice.
He wasn't upset about my gift. He was worried about her.
And now he wants me to make another one... for her?
Was my love that worthless to him?
I was such a fool.
I couldn't stand watching them like this, but as a ghost, I was trapped—forced to hover near Jaxon, helpless. I turned away, wishing I could disappear.
Emboldened by his kindness, Ruby pressed closer. "Jaxon... can I sleep here tonight?"
To my shock, he stiffened and pulled back, his voice turning sharp. "Ruby, this is just for show. Don't overstep."
She pouted but retreated to the guest room, bitterness flashing in her eyes before she left.
Alone, Jaxon tossed in bed, restless. After a while, he grabbed his phone, scrolling through our old messages—our last texts still frozen from that morning.
A frown creased his brow. Even when I was furious, I never ignored him this long.
Annoyed, he typed:
[Still giving me the silent treatment? Just say you're sorry, and I'll come get you. You're so damn stubborn...]
No reply.
Not because I didn't want to answer.
Because I couldn't.
(How do you text back when you're dead?)
Jaxon groaned, tossing his phone aside. "Whatever."
But for the first time ever, sleep wouldn't come.
The next morning, dark circles shadowed his eyes. He snatched his phone immediately.
[Enough punishment. I'm coming to get you.]
Just as he headed for the door, Ruby intercepted him.
"Jaxon, my family already thinks we're married. They're dying to meet you." She gave him a pleading look. "One last favor?"
