"Ruby, I need to get to the hospital to check on Olivia. Can't you just call a cab?"
Before Jaxon could even finish, Ruby burst into tears.
"Jaxon, I can't do this anymore. Please, just help me one last time. I'm begging you!" Her voice cracked. "Olivia's pregnant too—she'd understand, wouldn't she?"
A heavy silence stretched between them before Jaxon finally let out a resigned sigh.
"Send me the address."
Once again, he chose Ruby.
I wasn't even surprised anymore. This wasn't the first time he'd picked her over me.
On my birthday, he'd promised to celebrate with me—until Ruby called, terrified of the dark, needing someone to stay with her. He left me waiting in the freezing cold for three hours. I ended up with a fever.
For our tenth anniversary, Ruby suddenly decided she wanted to see the Northern Lights. So Jaxon dropped everything, flew her to the Arctic, and left me behind.
At first, I'd screamed, cried, thrown tantrums. But Jaxon always brushed it off. "Ruby's like a sister to me," he'd say, like that explained everything.
Now? I was done. Who he chose, who he clung to—none of it mattered to me anymore.
After hanging up, Jaxon turned to Henry. "Take care of her," he said, one last reminder before walking out.
Henry nodded. The second the door clicked shut, he grabbed his phone and called the crematorium.
At the hospital, Ruby was rushed into delivery while Jaxon paced outside like an anxious husband, his face etched with worry. A passing nurse nudged her colleague.
"Look at him," she whispered. "Standing by his wife like that while she's in labor? So sweet. Their kid's lucky—born into such a happy family."
To the world, Ruby and Jaxon were the perfect couple. Childhood sweethearts, destined to be together.
And me? I was the villain—the woman who'd torn them apart.
Ruby gave birth to a healthy 7.6-pound baby girl. The moment she was wheeled out, Jaxon rushed to her side, tenderly wiping the sweat from her forehead before cradling the newborn in his arms.
"Ruby, you did amazing," he murmured.
Exhausted but glowing, Ruby reached for her daughter, her face softening with love.
They looked like the perfect little family—radiant, complete.
And me? A hollow ache settled deep in my chest.
If only I hadn't lost so much blood. If only my baby had made it. Maybe she would've been just as beautiful.
But there were no "if onlys." My baby was gone. And so was I.
I couldn't help but wonder—what would Jaxon's face look like if he knew? If he realized he'd killed me? Killed our child?
Lost in thought, I barely noticed as Ruby was settled into her room.
Inside, Jaxon rocked the baby gently, his expression impossibly soft.
Ruby seized the moment, her voice trembling.
"Jaxon... you love Kathy so much. Why don't you stay? Just for a little while?" Her breath hitched. "Last time you left, my parents—they lost it. They called me disgusting. Said Kathy was a bastard. I fought back so hard I almost lost her..."
She reached for his hand, tears spilling over.
"Please. Just a little longer."
