I thought for a while, and the other end of the phone remained quiet, as if giving me time to think.
After a moment, I spoke in a low voice: "Evan... would it be too presumptuous if I asked you to help me investigate something?"
"Let's hear it." His tone was calm, but I could detect a hint of seriousness.
I gripped my phone tightly and briefly explained how Ashley's published silver moongrass stabilizer formula was plagiarized, and that she had bypassed necessary clinical procedures and would soon bring it to market.
During my explanation, I hid my identity as Moonveil, and he didn't probe too much into why I knew about this matter.
"This drug will harm people, but no one is willing to intervene now. I... hope you can help me, at least delay its market release."
The other end of the phone fell silent for a while, as if weighing something. After a moment, Evan spoke flatly: "Do you have evidence?"
"I'm still collecting it," I answered honestly. "That internal medical forum's server is overseas and has been shut down. A lot of data was lost, so we might not be able to find the original posts from back then."
"Alright." He said it simply, but his tone was different from the earlier casualness—it now carried a sense of certainty and authority.
I asked somewhat incredulously: "You'll really help me?"
Evan said: "It's hard to explain over the phone. How about this—come camping, we'll talk face to face. I guarantee this won't delay your investigation progress."
I agreed immediately.
The next day around 2 PM, I drove to the campsite. When I arrived, Evan and Liz had just gotten there too.
The people Evan brought were helping to set up tents and barbecue grills.
It had snowed for several days recently, and the mountains were covered with snow.
Seeing that I'd arrived, Liz came over and took my hand, saying she wanted to build a snowman with me.
Building a snowman wasn't difficult for me.
Before long, we had built a small snowman.
Liz had even specially prepared a scarf for the snowman. After finishing it, she ran to ask the servants to help her find a scarf and carrots.
Evan walked over to me and crouched down beside me, saying: "I've already had people start investigating the circulation path of Ashley's formula, as well as the clinical data she submitted. We should have results soon."
My heart jolted—I hadn't expected him to act so quickly.
I arranged the snowman while saying: "I didn't expect you to believe what I said."
Evan's gaze looked toward the end of the snowy field, his tone still calm: "The things you care about don't happen without reason. Since you think this matter is important, then it's worth my attention."
I opened my mouth, wanting to say something, but ultimately only managed: "Thank you."
Liz ran over happily, holding two scarves in her hands, her eyes crescent-shaped with joy as she said: "We need to build another big one! One big and one small together, just like me and Aunt Aurora!"
She turned to look at Evan and said sweetly: "Uncle, will you help too? You're the strongest—help me pile the snow higher!"
Evan looked down at her small, earnest face and complied without objection.
He took off his gloves, rolled up his sleeves, and silently followed Liz's requests, seriously building the large snowman.
Fine snow slipped through his fingers, the wind blowing his dark coat, his movements very gentle and patient.
As I helped Liz decorate the small snowman while watching this scene, I felt somewhat dazed.
I had once desperately hoped to have a child with Ferris, a happy family of three, just like this.
After the snowman was finished, Liz excitedly pulled me aside, wanting to take photos with me as a memento.
Evan picked up his phone and stood in the snow, pointing the camera at Liz and me.
But he seemed to be thinking about something and never pressed the shutter.
His lips moved slightly, as if he said something, but his voice was carried away by the wind — I couldn’t make out the words.
With a hint of confusion, I asked, “Evan, what was that you just said?”
