Before he could react, I hung up directly.
Then I sent him the recording of him and Linda's intense entanglement.
I pressed the power button, put on my eye mask, and fell into a deep sleep.
In my dream, sirens pierced the sky, and the entire pack fell into chaos overnight.
It was young Yorick being surrounded and attacked in the dark night, blood sliding down from his forehead as he roared and struggled, calling for help.
It was me hearing the commotion and rushing out, standing in front of Yorick, taking the fatal blow for him, yet being knocked away by the heavy impact, falling to the ground with blood flowing from my mouth and nose, still desperately protecting him and not letting him be taken away.
It was also young me, stumbling and rushing into the chaos at the street corner, dragging the half-unconscious Yorick to safety, until I fell heavily to the ground and something exploded in my ears, turning the entire world into dead silence.
Then it was Yorick, covered in wounds, kneeling in front of me, his eyes full of tears and guilt, swearing word by word:
"Aurora, I swear to you, I will never betray you."
But now, he had personally torn up that oath, like tearing up a piece of useless old paper.
The chaotic dream made me break out in a cold sweat.
Was all of this really worth it?
When I woke up again, the plane was just about to land.
I turned on my phone to find over a hundred missed calls and messages from strangers.
I was too lazy to look. In the crowd, I spotted my uncle at first glance.
Standing beside him were my gray-haired grandparents.
My mother's death not only made young me lose my protective harbor, but also brought indescribable pain to the two elderly people.
"Aurora, good child, you've suffered..."
Grandma lovingly touched my face, which was eighty percent similar to my mother's, tears streaming down her face.
All the grievances from this period erupted in an instant.
I hugged Grandma tightly and couldn't control my crying.
Grandma gently patted my back: "Aurora, don't be afraid, don't be afraid, you're home now..."
They surrounded me protectively as we walked toward the airport exit together.
We hadn't taken many steps when Uncle's phone rang. It was a call from Yorick's parents.
He looked at me with difficulty: "Aurora, Yorick's family has called me many times. I don't know what happened between you two, so I didn't answer."
"But no matter what, we will always be your support."
I nodded and took Uncle's phone, sliding to answer.
No matter how Yorick treated me, his parents were always without fault.
"Aurora, where did you go? I'm worried sick. Did Yorick make you unhappy? Come back, and I'll help you teach him a lesson, okay?"
Yorick's mother's voice came through. Before I could reply, the phone was snatched away.
Yorick's voice couldn't hide his bitterness and excitement: "Aurora?"
"It's me. What's the matter?"
He was stunned for a moment, then said in disbelief with a trembling voice: "You really can hear now. Thank goodness, I thought I was hallucinating before."
"I saw the recording you sent me, but Aurora, that was a misunderstanding. Come back first. After all these years, I really have so much I want to say to you..."
I fell silent in confusion.
After regaining my hearing, I learned that Yorick had always regarded me as a stumbling block preventing his happy life.
Faced with his parents' pressure to marry, although I didn't know about it, he didn't mind using escape from marriage—a way that hurt me—to resist.
Now that I was voluntarily letting go and allowing him and Linda to rush toward happiness, what was he doing?
Was it like how every time they flirted, they had to call me or have me nearby to make it exciting enough?
Did something like escaping marriage also need me behind them, collapsing and crying, to better demonstrate their priceless true love?
My silence made his tone more urgent.
"That recording was synthesized by someone else!"
"Please believe me. You can't imagine how scared I was when I saw the empty house and the ring on the coffee table!"
He spoke with such sincerity.
But I couldn't help but let out a sneer: "Yorick, what's wrong? Without me as a control group, your marriage escape wasn't exciting enough?"
"Or do you think that without me, this loyal dog, following behind you wagging my tail and begging for mercy, you feel uncomfortable?"
"Didn't you think the whole world was morally blackmailing you, forcing you to marry me? Now I'm gone, no one will force you anymore."
"You're free now. I wish you and Linda eternal happiness."
"Also, I recorded that audio myself."
After saying this, I moved the phone away.
On the phone, Yorick was desperately pleading: "What escape from marriage?!"
"Aurora, you misunderstood me. Let's talk..."
Without giving him a chance to finish, I returned the phone to Uncle.
All three of their faces looked very unpleasant.
After all, this phone call was enough for them to guess what had happened.
Grandma didn't speak, just patted my hand over and over, tears streaming down her face.
Uncle couldn't help but curse "beast."
I forced a smile: "It's all in the past."
