I immediately stood up, pulling her into my arms as fury surged from my chest.
"Ashley, are you insane?"
Ashley instantly put on a look of bewilderment: "I just touched her a little. How can she be so delicate?"
I looked down at Liz and indeed saw a red, swollen mark on her tender white arm.
I said coldly: "Apologize to Liz."
Ashley put on an innocent expression, saying: "Oh my, children love to make a fuss. I was just trying to calm her down so she wouldn't talk nonsense."
Suddenly, steady footsteps sounded outside the door.
Then a low, authoritative male voice rang out:
"Liz? Why are you crying? What happened?"
Evan pushed the door open and entered, his posture upright, his black casual clothes making him look particularly sharp.
Seeing the little girl trembling with tears in my arms, his brow immediately furrowed as he strode closer: "What's wrong?"
I was about to speak when Ashley beat me to it.
"Evan, is this your niece?"
Ashley's face paled, as if suddenly realizing something, her tone becoming urgent: "I just came to greet Dr. Windsor, and then Liz suddenly started crying... Did Dr. Windsor accidentally hurt Liz?"
"Me?"
I laughed coldly and looked down at the little girl still sobbing in my arms.
"Liz, tell your uncle what really happened."
Liz sniffled, her eyes red, gently raised her finger to point at Ashley, and said quietly: "It was... it was her... she pinched me... it hurt."
Ashley's expression changed dramatically: "You... what nonsense are you talking! How... how could I possibly pinch you? Evan, you've known me for so long, you should know I would never hurt a child, right?"
Her voice trembled, looking pitiful and innocent.
My heart sank heavily.
Familiar lines, familiar tactics.
She was acting cute and playing the victim. Ferris used to fall for this every time, and in the end, I was always the one who got wronged.
I lowered my eyes, preparing to watch Evan silently side with her, just like that man always did.
But the next second, Evan didn't even look at her, only speaking coldly:
"Ashley, apologize."
I jerked my head up.
Ashley clearly hadn't expected this either, her expression freezing: "What? You... you want me to apologize to her? She's just a child, what does she understand? You believe everything she says?"
"Whether she's lying or not, I can judge for myself."
Evan's tone was steady but carried an unquestionable coldness: "But I saw the injury on her arm, and I heard you deny it to my face. You should take responsibility for your actions."
"No way... I just—"
"Apologize." Evan repeated, this time his voice even lower and more somber.
He gave her no room for excuses.
Ashley's lips moved, but she looked as if she'd been slapped hard, her face alternating between pale and flushed.
She glared at me, then glanced down at Liz, finally squeezing out through gritted teeth: "I'm sorry."
I said nothing. Liz was a bit afraid of her and buried her face in Evan's embrace.
At that moment, I suddenly felt somewhat dazed.
So not every man would choose favoritism over truth.
Ashley bit her lip, her eyes reddening with tears, and fled the massage room almost as if escaping.
The air quieted again.
Just as I was about to turn and leave, Evan suddenly spoke: "Stay for dinner tonight, as... thanks for helping Liz today."
I instinctively wanted to refuse: "No need, I—"
