Valentine
"Hi, Nick. It's me, Valentine, again. It's been three weeks since you haven't returned any of my calls. I'm just worried that something bad happened to you. I've been visiting you every day, but your mom and sister always tell me that you went out. I just think we really need to talk, you know. Please call me back."
I stared at the screen of my phone for a while and eventually putting it back in my pocket after it locked on its own. I gripped the steering wheel and looked at Dominic's house one last time before finally starting the engine and driving to work. I've been doing the same routine every day, and honestly, I've never been committed like this before. I always wake up early just so I'll have some time to drive and hopefully catch Dominic. Unfortunately, I always end up disappointed. I know Mrs. Warren and Collene were lying to me about Dominic being out; he's probably somewhere in one of those windows just watching me. It's been three weeks, and they're just telling me the same old story over and over again. If there's one thing this scenario is telling me, Dominic wants to see me prove my worth to him. At least, that's what I'm seeing. Maybe he's just trying to see if I truly love him by just ignoring me. Testing isn't something new about him, and I know that is a fact because he had tested me a lot of times before. Although I reacted very negatively, I didn't realize that he's just trying to figure out something about me without me lying about it. I do love him to the moon and back. That's why I'm going to do whatever it takes to prove this love to him, no matter what it is. If he says I'm going to jump out of a plane, then I will. If he says I need to swim the Pacific Ocean for him, then I will. For now, I'm going to keep on coming back to their house every morning and every after work until he gives up from ignoring me.
I got to work two hours late again, and I can clearly tell by the crabby look on Ivana's face that she is not having it.
"Late again, huh?" She stood from her desk and met me as I walk towards my office.
"Yeah, I got caught in the morning rush hour."
"Val, we both know that's not true."
"Hmm."
"Hmm. That's it? That's your response?" She snarled at me as she staggered to block the entrance to my office. "Look, I know I'm the one who told you to keep trying until Dominic gives up, but this is already going overboard."
"I'm so sorry,"
"This is going beyond irresponsible. You're always this late, if not an hour, you come in when it's already lunchtime." Ivana went on, and I just looked at her as if I didn't care at all. "I'm telling you this, your dad is an inch close to finding out that you're abandoning your job."
"I'm so sorry. I'll promise to come in on time tomorrow."
"See, even now, you are forgetting your own calendar."
"What? Is there an event that I forgot about?"
"Val," She popped her eyes and stared at me. "It's our day off."
"Oh, okay."
Ivana moved aside, and we both entered my office. I removed my suit and draped it on the backrest of my chair. We did the usual routine. Talk about what's going on. Me telling everything to Ivana, and she's basically giving me a lot of advice. I feel like I'm this brainless king, and she's the smart and wise advisor.
"I feel like Dominic's just testing me," I began just as Ivana laid my coffee on the table.
"You know what, I feel that too." She nodded in absolute agreement. "And you need to change strategy."
"Like how? I don't want to just barge into their house. That's basically trespassing."
"Of course you're not trespassing, you idiot."
"Hahaha, then what?"
"You need to call Yhannie. I bet she knows how to help you."
"You're right. How did I not think about that?" My eyes seemed to spark at that idea. It's been two weeks, and Ivana's just telling me about this. Maybe I really had to piss her off before she could even suggest this.
"Because you're overwhelmed with sadness, I guess," Ivana uttered and then left.
Am I overwhelmed with sadness? I think I am. I haven't been as productive as I used to. I don't regret that I tried to take revenge on Dominic; clearly, it's a part of my coping mechanism, but I do regret that I didn't tell him about it as soon as possible. When we were going out and all, I am so much in love, just like the first time, and that's clearly the hint that I needed to be honest with him.
I'm such a stupid person. Ivana wasn't lying when she told me I needed something like a backup plan because she doesn't think everything will work out the way I planned it, and it didn't. I made a huge mistake. I lost the game, but who cares? I love the man.
The day reeled to an end, and its finally time to go home. Ivana said someone's picking her up, so I don't need to take her home. As I was about to start the engine, I suddenly remembered that I needed to call Yhannie. I fished my phone, and at the first dial, she answered.
"Hey, Valentine. How are you?" She said as soon as she picked up the phone.
"I'm good. I'm good. Uhm, can you help me with something?" I said, wasting no time.
"Is this about a surprise or something?" She said, referencing the time when I called her help for Dominic's birthday surprise.
"No, but this is about Dominic."
"Oh, what about him? You two are doing okay?"
"No, we're not okay. And that's why I'm asking for your help."
"Sure, I'm a helpful person. I'll help you."
"So, I've been trying to talk to him, but he's ignoring me for weeks. I'm hoping you could set us up to meet?" I told Yhannie, and she went quiet for a long moment, which made me worried that she dropped the call because she didn't want to help me. "Hello, Yhannie! Are you still there?"
"Oh, sorry. I'm still here. I'm just walking on the streets and had to cross. What were you saying again?"
"So, I've been trying to talk to him, but he's,"
"Yeah, yeah. I heard that. Just the last thing you said."
"Oh. Uhm, I was hoping if you could set us both to meet?"
"Well... I'm afraid that's not possible, though."
"What? Why?"
"Hmm. I thought you already know about this, but Dominic is in Singapore."
"What?!!!!" I almost screamed upon hearing this news. "Singapore? Since when?"
"Well, he's been there for three weeks now," Yhannie spat, and I just clenched my fist to calm myself.
"You mean I was going to their house for nothing?" I mewled. All this time, I thought he was just hiding from me inside their home, but he's actually across the sea.
"Hey, uhm. I'm about to meet a friend. I hope I've helped you. I'm going to end this call now. Bye."
Yhannie ended the call, and I was left shaken to my bones. Dominic's been out of the country the whole time; I'm hoping to catch him. Something foolish swept over me, and I quickly drove home. By the time I got home, I quickly booked a ticket to Singapore. Luckily, I was able to find a flight tonight at 10:30 pm. After securing the plane, I packed my things as snappy as possible and called a grab towards the airport. I'm more than galvanized to take this risked and I will make sure it will pay off.
While sitting at the backseat of the grab, I've thought of what Ivana had just said about abandoning my job, and I called her immediately. She was at a party when she picked up, and she had to go somewhere else quiet before I could even tell her about what's going on. She was frustrated at first, and she's not okay with it until I told her this is my last chance to getting the man I love. She quickly gave up and said she can't be the villain of my love story. She ended up agreeing and even reassured me that she'll do whatever she could to lie to my dad, the crew, and the board.
I got to the airport and waited for about an hour and thirty minutes before it was my time to board the plane. I was pretty much agitated that I kept jerking my knee just after sitting on the plane. I don't know where to look for him, but I'm certain that Singapore isn't as huge as Canada, to begin with.
The flight attendant was talking in front, telling us about the standard procedure and whatnot, but all I can think of was Dominic mothef****** Warren. I took one last glance at our photos together before eventually turning my phone off. I put my phone back in my pocket, and I felt something familiar. It was the ring that my mom gave to me. I fished it from my pocket and stared at it for about a minute until I heard my seatmate talk.
"Proposing to someone, huh?" The guy with a curly mullet said.
"Uhm," I paused for a while. "I don't know."
"You've been staring at that ring for a while. You must love that person."
"I do," I said, smiling at the simple thought of seeing Dominic smile. The thought of him saying yes if I ever proposed to him tasted so much like heaven. The thought of us being together will most definitely be the best thing that will happen to my life.
"Then you should propose before they could even getaway." The guy suggested, and the woman beside him talked.
"You should know about someone getting away," The woman said, and that's the moment I saw they were both holding each other's hand.
"You two are married?" I asked.
"Just got married," The woman said, and they both showed their rings.
"We just had our honeymoon," The guy uttered.
"Oh, Ozzy. I will never forget our first honeymoon." The woman said, and I can truly feel they had the best honeymoon of their life.
"I love you," The guy said, and I smiled as they both dissolve in a kiss.
I returned the ring back to my pocket. I can't wait to see Dominic and take him as the love of my life.
